Hayes Named Researcher of Year by ASC Division of Victimology

Assistant Professor Brittany Hayes of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology was named the 2017 Faculty Researcher of the Year by the American Society of Criminology Division of Victimology.
The ASC is one of the largest organizations in criminal justice in the country, and the Division of Victimology is one of its newest sections. The Faculty Researcher Award is presented to a scholar who has made a significant contribution to the area of victimology over the last two years.
“It is an absolute honor to be recognized by the academy and my fellow victimologists,” Hayes said. “I have been fortunate to collaborate with my mentors from John Jay College as well as colleagues and graduate students at Sam Houston. Each article hopefully continues to raise attention to the challenges victims still face and provides directions for future research.”
Hayes joined the Sam Houston State University faculty in 2014. Her areas of expertise include intimate partner violence and contextual factors that influence behaviors and attitudes. During her academic career, she published 15 articles in peer-reviewed journals. Topics of these articles include post-separation intimate partner violence, risk factors of intimate partner violence in Mali, honor killings and cross-national factors that influence behaviors and attitudes. Her articles have appeared in journals such as, Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, American Sociological Review, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, and Violence Against Women.
Last year, Hayes also was presented a SAGE Junior Faculty Teaching Award “in recognition of significant promise as a teacher.” Created in 2008, the award recognizes new teaching professionals in the criminal justice and criminology disciplines.
Hayes graduated from John Jay College of Criminal Justice with her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice in 2014. Prior to that, she earned her B.A. at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.
The mission of the Division of Victimology is to promote the professional growth and development of its members through scholarship, pedagogy and practices associated with the field of Victimology. The division strives to support and disseminate cutting-edge research; develop and share pedagogical resources; support professional enhancement workshops and activities; embrace the development of evidence-informed programs and services; advance victims’ rights, and encourage the advancement of the intersection of scholarship and practices.
