The 24th Annual Sammy Awards will take place on Wednesday, April 11 at 6 p.m. in the James & Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center to celebrate students, faculty, staff and on-campus entities for their dedication and service to Sam Houston State University.

Tickets are free and will be distributed the evening of the ceremony starting at 5 p.m. in the GPAC Lobby and are limited to one ticket per person.

“The Sammys” is the official student award ceremony hosted by the Department of Student Activities for SHSU. The university community is invited to help honor the nominees and award-winners and reflect on the contributions they have made within the school.

“Every year we have the opportunity to highlight our students, faculty and staff,” said Kelly Patterson, program coordinator for Student Activities. “The ceremony has even evolved to incorporate various performances and showcases from different departments on campus. Although the ceremony is a set tradition, the excitement is always present each year because the winners are not announced until the evening of the ceremony.”

Sammys20172The major award categories are seven individual college awards, which recognize outstanding students from each college who are nominated by faculty within their college; 17 individual and organizational awards, which require nominations from the SHSU community; the Sam Houston Cane Award, which recognizes campus entities who do not fall under the previous categories; and four Sammy Awards, which honors two graduating seniors and two faculty or staff members who have contributed myriad of hours of their time in improving SHSU.

“This year, the Department of Theatre and Musical Theatre will perform a piece from ‘Pippin,’” Patterson said. “We are also very excited for Jared Doster and Joel Rivera to perform ‘Umbilic’ on behalf of the School of Dance.  Jared choreographed this piece and he and Joel were selected to represent SHSU and the entire region at the National Conference in Washington D.C. where they have the opportunity to peform at the Kennedy Center.”
