The Sam Houston Memorial Museum always has plenty of professional photographs, depictions and art presented throughout the grounds. However, amateurs will soon have the chance for their work to be put on display next to these historical exhibits.

The 2018 photo contest, which marks the museum’s ninth year to sponsor the event, is now accepting submissions. Casey Roon, curator of exhibits, wanted to bring something new to the museum, and with her love of photography the photo contest was born.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for amateur photographers of all ages to have their work displayed prominently in a gallery setting of an accredited museum,” Roon said.

There are no residency requirements to enter the contest and it is open to anyone who is a non-professional photographer. Prizes include $100 for Best in Show, $75 for Reserve Grand Champion and $20 for first, $15 for second, and $10 for third place in each of the six categories.

Twenty Curator’s Choice awards will also be given.  The categories for submission this year are floral, animals, people, landscape, architecture and Sam Houston Museum and grounds.

Deadline to enter is Monday, Oct. 1 by 4 p.m. and the cost per entry is $5 with a payment method of cash only.  Each photo entry must have its own entry form.  Photographs must be submitted as full 8-by-10 unmounted, unframed and with no border.  No exceptions.

Photos will not be accepted that have titles and names printed on the front of the image and entries must be suitable for family viewing.  Photographers may enter as many categories as they like, but no more than two photos per category.

400photocontestAll submitted photos will be on display in the exhibit gallery at the Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center.  Winners will be determined by a panel of judges.  The photo contest exhibit will open to the public on Tuesday, Oct. 16 and the Awards and Artists Reception will be held on Thursday, Nov. 29 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The complete list of contest rules and application forms can be picked up at the Main Museum, Wigwam Neosho Museum Store, or the Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center any time during museum hours or downloaded directly from the website at samhoustonmemorialmuseum.com
