BoyGirl Scouts and Boy Scouts from all over the state gathered on Sam Houston State University’s campus on April 30 for the seventh annual Scouts@Sam event.

“Since Scouts@Sam began in 2009 the program has been growing,” on-campus recruitment coordinator Christopher Arcos said. “Thanks to new facilities, resources and campus partnerships, this year there were over 450 scouts and scout leaders in attendance, the most the program has seen.”

The faculty and staff instructed courses that lead the scouts to earn merit badges. Assistant professor of mass communication Marcus Funk taught a lesson for a communication merit badge, instructional design specialist Rachel Baxter taught a lesson for an engineering badge and associate professor Michael Henderson taught a lesson for a graphics merit badge.

Along with SHSU’s faculty and staff, the University Police Department and the Huntsville Police Department instructed the scouts on crime prevention, traffic safety and fingerprinting merit badges.

Members of SHSU’s Bearkat Battalion took the Boy Scouts to Gibbs Ranch for orienteering and survival skills.

The program offered 27 different badges for Boy Scouts and four different journeys for the Girl Scouts. Aside from giving the scouts a chance to earn badges, Arcos hopes this program will expose them to higher education.

“The event is a great way for scouts to learn about programs at SHSU and get comfortable with the idea of being on a college campus,” Arcos said. “They are learning in college classrooms from college faculty and eating at Old Main Market with college students. We want them to know that higher education is an option.”
