  PRESIDENT ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

  1. CHARLES EGBERT HENRY & MARY FARRINGTON HENRY PRESIDENT'S ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester awarded to a sophomore pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree as an English major. Recipient must have an overall GPA during the preceding academic year of 3.0 and a minimum of 3.3 in English. Continuation of the scholarship for two additional years is contingent upon the recipient maintaining each semester the GPA criteria of the scholarship.
  2. THOMAS CLIFTON GIBBS & JAMESETTE HUNT PRESIDENT'S ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree as a business major. Recipient must: be in the upper 10 percent of their high school graduating class; score not less than 1340 (critical reading + math) on the SAT I or 30 on the ACT; and be classified as a beginning freshman.
  3. MARY BUSH SMITHER PRESIDENT'S ENDOWMENT: $1000 per semester.  Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in any discipline; be in the upper 10 percent of their high school graduating class and score not less than 1340 (critical reading and math) on the SAT I or 30 on the ACT; and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.00.   For additional information contact: Paula Turner, SHSU Box 2120, email: scholarship@shsu.edu
  4. PAULINE BUTLER AKER PRESIDENT'S ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree. Recipients may major in any discipline, but must: be in the upper 10 percent of their high school class; score not less than 1340 (critical reading +math) on the SAT I or 30 on the ACT; and be classified as a beginning freshman.
  5. BOBBY KEES & COLLEEN ANN MARKS PRESIDENTIAL ENDOWMENT FUND: $1000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree. The recipient must be an incoming freshman majoring in any discipline, but must: graduate in the upper ten percent of his/her high school graduating class; have an ACT score of not less than 30 or an SAT score of not less than 1340 (critical reading + math); maintain an overall GPA of 3.25; and be enrolled full-time and in good standing at Sam Houston State University. 
ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:
 
  1. UNIVERSITY SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIPS: $500 per semester for two semesters. Awarded to beginning freshmen. Recipients must be in the upper 20 percent of their high school graduating class and score not less than 1200 (critical reading + math) on the SAT I or 27 on the ACT.

    The criteria for the following scholarships are the same as those for University Scholars Scholarships. Applicants who are not selected for a University Scholars Scholarship will also be considered for the scholarships listed below:
     

  3. BELLE CLAYTON ATKEISSON SCHOLARSHIP: $125 per semester, two consecutive semesters of the freshman year.
  4. DELLA MCKENZIE BLACKMON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $100 per semester, two consecutive semesters of the freshman year.
  5. MINNIE JANE THREADGILL HEINS SCHOLARSHIP: $250 per semester, two consecutive semesters of the freshman year.
  6. TOMLINSON-LEDBETTER SCHOLARSHIP: $300 per semester, eight consecutive semesters beginning with the freshman year.

OTHER SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
 
  1. BAPTIST WOMEN'S CECIL M. & DOROTHY ANN DIXON JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount to be determined by the selection committee. Recipient must be a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Huntsville,TX; have applied for admission and been accepted, or be enrolled as a full-time student at SHSU, majoring in any discipline; maintain an overall GPA of 2.5. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor in the selection process.
  2. ROBYN LEIGH BARRUM MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters of the freshman year. Recipients must: be a graduate of Huntsville High School who has applied for admission and been accepted as a full-time student at SHSU, majoring in any discipline; maintain not less than a 2.0 GPA; and demonstrate financial need.
  3. SCOTT A. BICKEL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 for one semester. Recipients must: be full/part-time students enrolled at SHSU; major in any discipline; and work as a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. May 1st application deadline date.
  4. ERNESTINE LeTARDE CARROLL & OUIDA CARROLL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters following date of award. Recipients must: be enrolled at SHSU; major in english, history, speech, political science, sociology, or theatre and dance; and maintain not less than an overall 3.0 GPA.
  5. JUDGE & MRS. JAMES A ELKINS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree. The recipient must be an incoming freshman majoring in any discipline, but must; graduate in the upper ten percent of his/her high school graduating class; have an ACT score of not less than 30 or an SAT score of not less than 1340 (critical reading + math); and be enrolled full-time and maintain an overall GPA of 3.25.
  6. JOHN A. ELMORE, JR., JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP: $250 per semester for two semesters. Recipient must: be a sophomore, junior, or senior; major in mass communications with an emphasis on journalism; and maintain not less than a 3.0 GPA.
  7. FANNIE ROBINSON TYSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $250.00 per semester for the next two semesters. Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student in good standing enrolled at SHSU, demonstrate financial need, have achieved an overall high school GPA of 3.0, maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 at SHSU and have graduated from Coldspring-Oakhurst High School in San Jacinto County, Texas.
  8. FITZ FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for the next two semesters following the date of the award. SHSU recipients must have not less than a 3.0 GPA. High school applicants must meet the same requirements as those for University Scholars; all applicants must demonstrate financial need.
  9. HUNTSVILLE LION'S CLUB ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded to a Huntsville High School senior who has been accepted and plans to attend SHSU, majoring in any discipline.
  10. CHARLES W. JONES, JR. COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP: $500 award to a student enrolled in good standing at SHSU, majoring in any discipline. Recipients must: demonstrate involvement in community service; demonstrate financial need; and maintain not less than an overall 2.5 GPA.
  11. JESSE H. JONES & MARY GIBBS JONES SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters following the award. Recipients must be sophomores, junior or seniors, majoring in liberal arts (economics, English, foreign language, geography, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, and speech communications) or graphic arts (art, studio art, animation art, multimedia, and photography) and maintain not less than a 3.0 GPA.
  12. HARMON LOWMAN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters of the freshman year. Recipients must be in the upper 20 percent of their graduating class and score not less than 1200 (critical reading + math) on the SAT I or 27 on the ACT.
  13. ARTHUR BEVERLY AND MARY ALICE MAYS ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester, two semesters. Awarded to students who have attended SHSU for two consecutive academic years with an overall GPA of not less than 3.0 and be classified as a juniors or seniors.
  14. JESSE NEWELL & THOMAS SEARS MONTGOMERY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of award is determined by accrued interest. Recipient must: demonstrate financial need; meet normal SHSU entrance requirement; and be enrolled as full-time student at SHSU; and maintain an overall GPA of not less than 2.5.
  15. DAN RATHER/HORATIO ALGER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of award is determined by accrued interest. Recipient must: be enrolled and in good standing at SHSU; major in any discipline; maintain an overall GPA of 3.0; submit an essay describing how student has overcome adversity; submit three letters of recommendation; and demonstrate financial need.
  16. JOHN W. SPONBERG JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP: $250 per semester for two semesters. Recipients must: be a sophomore; major in mass communications with an emphasis on journalism; and maintain not less than a 3.0 GPA.
  17. M.C. SUTTON SCHOLARSHIP: $500 award for the fall semester following date of award. Recipient must; be physically challenged; be a full-time student at SHSU; work toward a degree in any discipline; have completed at least 30 semester credit hours; and maintain not less than an overall GPA of 2.5.
  18. STATE FARM FRIENDS OF SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of award is determined by accrued interest. Recipients must: be a full-time SHSU student in any classification; maintain an overall GPA of not less than 2.0; demonstrate financial aid; and submit a statement describing financial need.
  19. TEXAS PIONEER FOUNDATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year; Recipient must be a full or part-time (minimum of 6 hours per long semester) student majoring in any discipline and demonstrate financial aid; maintain an overall GPA of 2.00.
  20. CLAUDE H. & ALICE M. TOWNSEND FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP: $625 per semester for two semesters to a beginning freshman. Recipients must: have been in the upper 20 percent of their high school graduating class; score not less than 1200 (critical reading + math) on the SAT I or 27 on the ACT; and demonstrate financial need. Scholarship may be renewed annually for three additional years, based upon availability of funds and not less than a 3.0 GPA at SHSU.
  21. BRUCE/HILLEGEIST ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per semester for two semesters. The recipients may be selected from the incoming freshmen, SHSU or transfer students. The recipients must be full-time, major in any discipline, and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 while attending Sam Houston State University.
  22. DR. RUTH M. CADY & DR. DOROTHY A. HUSKEY HEALTH SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 per year. Recipients must be full-time junior or senior students. One scholarship award is for a student majoring in health education, and the other scholarship award is for a student pursuing a pre-professional health related major. Both must show a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Financial need is a consideration but not a determining factor in the awarding of this scholarship.
  23. McDONALD'S/DAN LEASURE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The amount of the scholarship varies per semester. Recipients must be a full time sophomore, junior or senior. Recipients with the following majors will be selected on a rotating schedule: dance, basketball and accounting. Selection preference will be given to a McDonald's employee, who is a full time SHSU sophomore, junior, or senior maintaining not less than an overall 3.0 GPA.
  24. JAMES W. WALSTEAD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $2500 per semester. Scholarship was established in memory of the donor's son, an SHSU graduate. Scholarship is to be awarded to a freshman student who has been a resident of the state of Texas for at least one year. This is a four-year award, continuation dependent upon maintaining a GPA of 3.25. The recipient must have a record of extracurricular activities and leadership (sports not to be overweighed when compared to other activities). The student must demonstrate financial need.
  25. THE GRADUATE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP: A competitive scholarship awarded to graduate students whose academic accomplishments and university or community citizenship are excellent in every respect. This competitive scholarship is intended for a full time student enrolled as a resident, nonresident or a citizen of a country other than the United States of America, maintaining not less than a 3.50 GPA. The award amount is determined on the availability of funds - for summer semester only.
  26. THE UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Is a competitive scholarship awarded to entering freshmen, Sam Houston State University undergraduate and transfer students whose academic accomplishments and university or community citizenship are excellent in every respect. This competitive scholarship is intended for a full time student enrolled as a resident, nonresidents or a citizen of a country other than the United States of America, maintaining not less than a 3.25 GPA. The award amount is determined on the availability of funds.
  27. HUNTSVILLE STUDY CLUB: Scholarship amount will be determined annually according to endowment earnings. This scholarship will be awarded for two semesters of the freshman year to a female graduating senior from Huntsville High School majoring in any discipline. The recipient is required to be a full-time SHSU student maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Applicants will need to submit a 250 word statement of life goals.
  28. HERRINGTON VETERANS SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year. Scholarship awarded to a married undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University. Student must be a US Army veteran who has served in a foreign conflict at least 6 months and has an honorable discharge. Financial need is a consideration in the selection of a recipient, but not a determining factor. GPA of at least 2.8 is required.
  29. MILDRED REED HANCOCK ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per year. Scholarship is available to full-time sophomore, junior or senior majoring in any discipline at SHSU. This scholarship was established to benefit persons who started college, but left to raise a family. Recipient must demonstrate financial need and have a GPA of at least 2.5.
  30. JUANITA BROWN THREADGILL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1,500 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, have taken time between high school and starting college (minimum of six months) or be returning to college (after a minimum of six months out of college) to finish a degree or to get another degree.  Preference will be given to single parents.  Recipients will continue to receive this award for a second year as long as they are students at SHSU and continue to meet the selection criteria.  They must submit a one page essay on their future plans and how the scholarship has affected them.  Recipients may receive the scholarship for a third year if they write an essay demonstrating that they are under particular hardship and deserve to receive the scholarship another year.  GPA of 2.8 is required. 
  31. JIM STEVENS COMPUTER SERVICES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:$1,000 per year. Recipient must be a part or full-time undergraduate, graduate or doctoral student, majoring in any discipline and be employed by Computer Services Department for at least the last six months.  Financial need is a consideration.   GPA requirement is 2.80.  Application submission deadline is Feb. 15.
  32. GREATER TEXAS FOUNDATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year. Recipient must be; an entering freshman student in good standing enrolled at SHSU majoring in any discipline; demonstrate financial need; and must maintain an overall GPA of 2.8.
  33. ANNA PENNYBACKER MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT: Recipient must be: a full-time student junior or senior majoring in any discipline; demonstrate that they have had several months of travel and/or have studied at a recognized center of art or culture; and maintain an overall 2.5 GPA.
  34. H.H. "TUBBY" AND NUNA SANDEL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $2000 per semester. The recipient must: have graduated from a Walker County high school; be a full-time incoming freshman student enrolled at SHSU; majoring in any discipline; demonstrate financial need; have a minimum SAT score of 1050 or a minimum ACT score of 23. The recipient must maintain at least an overall 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to students majoring in math or science, but is not limited to those majors.
  35. VIVIAN REID MEHR SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled at SHSU and majoring in any discipline; entering or returning to college after raising a family or planning a second career. 3.0 GPA requirement. Application deadline is March 1.
  36. AMATO BROTHERS SCHOLARSHIP: $3,000 per year; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, majoring in any discipline, demonstrate financial need, and exhibit commitment to continue and complete their education. The recipient must maintain not less than a 2.5 GPA in major and overall.
  37. WILFRED AND BOBBIE DIETRICH ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per year; Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student majoring in English, speech or drama, and demonstrate financial need. GPA requirement 3.0.
  38. RAVEN/KAPPA ALPHA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The amount of the scholarship varies per semester. Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students (minimum of 12 hours, first time or repeat hours), active member of Gamma Tau chapter of Kappa Alpha Order, in good standing with the university, the fraternity and the National Office of Kappa Alpha Order and of good character to reflect positively on the Chapter. GPA requirement is 3.0 in previous long semester.
  39. PHYSICAL PLANT FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in any discipline and be a natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a currently employed SHSU Physical Plant staff member. GPA requirement 2.50. Application deadline is February 15.
  40. PHI BETA SIGMA FRATRNITY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, of minority descent, provide evidence of a minimum of 20 hours of community service within the last year, provide three letters of recommendation from teachers or community leaders, and provide a one-page letter expressing goals and aspirations.  No GPA requirement.
  41. DAN RATHER AND JEAN RATHER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $3,000 per year.  Recipients must be incoming undergraduate, first-time freshman students majoring in any discipline, demonstrate financial need, have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
  42. CLAY AND MARGARET B. SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior majoring in any discipline and demonstrate financial need.  GPA requirement is 2.8.
  43. GLENDA DAWSON EDUCATIONAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, majoring in any discipline.  Financial need is a consideration. 
  44. POLLARD FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 per year.  Recipient must be either full-time or part-time graduate or doctoral student majoring in any discipline within the Colleges of Education, Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, or Humanities & Social Sciences, demonstrate financial need, and present documentation of his or her exceptional teaching ability by having received an award for teaching.  Although it is not a requirement, it is the express desire that the recipient intends to return to teaching in a public or private school after obtaining his or her advanced degree.  GPA of 3.0 is required.
  45. ARLEIGH B. TEMPLETON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipients must be full or part-time undergraduate or graduate students majoring in any discipline within the College of Education.  Job Corps graduates have priority.  GPA of 3.50 is required. 
  46. RUTH AND J.A. CHANDLER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipients must be full-time junior or senior students in good standing and of good character enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in agriculture or elementary education or family and consumer science with the intent to receive teacher certification.  GPA of 2.50 is required.
  47. HOUSTON AND ROBBIE McCARLEY COMMUNITY SERVICE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU, majoring in any discipline, have a minimum of 20 hours of documented community service within the last year and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.00 is required.
  48. INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL EXCHANGE ACCOUNTING SCHOLARSHIP:$1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU, majoring in accounting, have transferred from a community college in the North Harris Montgomery Community College District and have been previously or currently be affiliated with the International Cultural Exchange.  A GPA of 3.0 is required. 
  49. ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT GENERATIONS SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student, in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, be a (a) natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a currently employed staff member from the University's Enrollment Management Division; or (b) natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a retired staff member of the University's Enrollment Management Division, with a retirement date on or after December 31, 2007; demonstrate financial need by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and be employed full-time or part-time, and/or involved in community service, and be active in an on-campus organization.  GPA requirement is 2.50.
  50. SWEET CARPENTER PRESIDENTIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per semester.  Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in any discipline and be a graduate of a high school in Trinity Texas.  If, in any one year, there are no qualified applicants from a high school in Trinity Texas, the scholarship may be awarded to a qualified incoming freshman student from any high school in East Texas.  Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor.  This is a four-year award as long as the recipient continues to meet all of the selection criteria.  GPA of 3.00 is required.

DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Sam Houston State University competes at the NCAA Division I level (I-AA in football) in 15 varsity sports. The Bearkats are members of the Southland Conference and have a tradition of excellence that includes national championships in baseball, golf and softball and NCAA playoff appearances in football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, golf and track and field. The intercollegiate sports in which SHSU fields teams are football, volleyball, men's/women's cross country, men's/women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's/women's golf, women's tennis, and men's/women's indoor/outdoor track and field. Athletic scholarships are offered in all sports.

  2. ERIC SULLINS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per long semester. Must be currently enrolled male SHSU student and in good academic standing. Must demonstrate financial need. Must uphold outstanding qualities as a male student.
  3. LIBBY BRITT-PHILO/ZETA TAU ALPHA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $200 annually. Must be a junior or senior member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and living in the ZTA sorority house. Must demonstrate financial need.
  4. ORANGE PRIDE: $500 per long semester. Must maintain a 2.5 GPA and be a full-time student. Tryouts for the team are held in April.

  1. ELLIOTT T. BOWERS SCHOLARSHIP: Available up to four years totaling up to $2800. Any student who has been accepted to the Elliott T. Bowers Honors Program and is currently in good standing within the program is eligible to apply.
  2. AUGUSTA LAWRENCE SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters. Any member of the Elliott T. Bowers Honors Program in good standing who will be a junior or senior is eligible to apply.

  MILITARY SCIENCE (ROTC)


  1. ARMY RESERVE OFFICER'S TRAINING CORPS (ROTC) SCHOLARSHIPS: Army ROTC scholarships are merit-based and awarded on competitive basis. These scholarships cover all tuition and fees. In addition, each winner receives a flat rate of $450 annually for books. A student will also receive a subsistence allowance of up to $2000 each school year the scholarship is in effect. The period for requesting an application form for a four-year Army ROTC scholarship is from March 1 of a high school student's junior year through November 1 of a student's senior year. If the completed application is post-marked by July 15, the applicant will be considered for an early scholarship. Winners are announced about November 1.
  2. Eligibility requirements are:

    A. U.S. citizen
    B. Age 17 before the scholarship is effective.
    C. Taken the SAT or ACT no later than November of the year of application, have a minimum 850 SAT or composite 19 ACT.
    D. Good high school grades.
    E. Participate in leadership, extracurricular, and athletic activities (part-time jobs earn substitute credit).
    F. Under age 27 on June 30 of the expected graduation year (*Qualifying veterans may be granted an extension of up to four years).
    G. High school graduate or have equivalent credit.
    H. Agree to accept a commission in the U.S. Army.
    I. Agree to pursue Army approved academic major.
    J. Meet required physical standards.

  3. SCHUDER'S RANGER COMPANY SCHOLARSHIP: This $20,300 scholarship was created by Raymond Schuder and his wife, Vernon, for needy and deserving students participating in the Ranger Company while attending Sam Houston State University. To be considered as a recipient applicants must satisfy the following criteria: APPLICATION DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 15 & MARCH 30.

    C. Maintain good scholarship and excellence, while representing SHSU through participation in the Ranger Company.
     

  5. THE COLONEL JOHN W. THOMASON JR., USMC, MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This $10,000 endowed scholarship was created by the sisters of Colonel Thomason: Mrs. Sue T. Noordberg, Mrs. Emily T. Petersen, and Mrs. Margaret T. Cole. The scholarship includes a saber awarded to the future Bearkat Battalion Commander for the Fall semester. To be considered as a recipient applicants must satisfy the following criteria: 1) Enrolled as a contracted Military Science III Cadet in the necessary to assume command of the BearKat Battalion, and 3) Maintain good scholarship and excellence while representing SHSU through the Army ROTC Program.
  6. TWO OR THREE YEAR RESERVE FORCES DUTY SCHOLARSHIP: Eligibility requirements are the same as the four year scholarship except that applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (at application time and time of receivership). Three year applicants must have a qualifying SAT/ACT score, two year applicants do not require a SAT/ACT score. APPLICATION DEADLINE: CONTACT U.S. ARMY RECRUITER.
  7. JAMES DENNIS BAZAN MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT:  A Military Science student must be enrolled in the Bearkat Battalion the following fall and spring and in good standing at SHSU. Student must maintain an overall 2.25 GPA and demonstrate financial need.
  8. COPELAND MILITARY SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: Well provide two $250 annual awards each year. Recipient must be minoring in Military Science. 2.5 GPA required. APPLICATION DEADLINE: APRIL 15.
  9. COLONEL WILLIAM JACKSON BYTHE, SR ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and a member of the ROTC program, demonstrate financial need, have achieved an overall high school GPA of 3.0 and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 at SHSU. APPLICATION DEADLINE: JULY 31ST.
  10. COLONEL JOHN A. AND GEANIE L. MCMANNERS ROTC SCHOLARSHIP; recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior student, majoring in any discipline, and a member of the ROTC program. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor; $1,000/year and must maintain a grade point average or 2.50 or better; deadline is 1 February.
**An extension of up to four years may be granted for previous active duty service. The length of extension cannot exceed the period of service, e.g., with 2 years active service the applicant must be under 27 years on June 30 of the calendar year eligible for commissioning. The maximum extension is four years which means the applicant must be under 29 years on June 30 of the calendar year of appointment as a commissioned officer.

Remember, there is no obligation to the U.S. Army to apply for a scholarship, only to accept one.

  3. SAN ANTONIO LIVESTOCK EXPOSITION SCHOLARSHIP: $10,000/4 years, awards to incoming freshman only, two awards given annually, major in a field of agriculture, 12 credit hours per semester minimum, 3.0 GPA, Texas residents only. Must comply with S.A.L.E. requirements.
  4. JAMES MARCUS SMITH ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $500-1000/year, 2.75 GPA, Animal Husbandry/Animal Science majors, selection based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  5. WILSON-WARNER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000-3000/year, 3.5 GPA, major in field of agriculture, other selection criteria based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  6. WILLIE FRANK HALL TRUST SCHOLARSHIP: $1000-1500/year, two awards (may vary), 2.75 GPA, graduated in upper half of high school class, major in agricultural sciences seeking teacher certification, other selection criteria same as previous scholarship.
  7. LOWRY SCHOLARSHIP: $300/year (approximately), two semesters completed at SHSU, active in Collegiate FFA, good character and scholarship, other criteria same as previous scholarship.
  8. SEITZ GIFT FRUIT/GOLDEN VALLEY FARMS SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, two awards, 2.5 GPA, major in agricultural sciences seeking teacher certification, one awarded to senior prior to student teaching, the other awarded to a senior within the student teaching block.
  9. LETTS-HOPPER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, one award, junior or senior, major in agricultural sciences, selected on the basis of character, academic achievement and financial need.
  10. CLEMON AND CAROLYN MONTGOMERY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, one award, 2.75 GPA, major in agricultural sciences, selection based on demonstrated financial need.
  11. ANN CRUMP AND CHARLES T. MALLERY AGRIBUSINESS UNDERGRUATE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies annually, and recipient must have a 3.0 GPA. Recipient must be a full-time entering freshman student, majoring in Agribusiness, demonstrate financial need, be a high performing high school student with demonstrated involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service, and be a natural born citizen of the United States.
  12. MYRON A. BALCOM INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies annually. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in industrial Technology; 3.0 GPA required; Deadline date for application submission is March 15th.
  13. EDGAR A. AND CAROLYN L. REEVES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000./year, recipient must be a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in Agriculture and demonstrate financial need, required grade point average is 3.00, deadline is March 20.
  14. BYRD FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF SHSU RODEO ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000./year, recipient must be full-time undergraduate students majoring in any discipline, be accepted into the Rodeo Program, and meet NIRA eligibility. DEPARTMENT OF ART
 

  1. ART ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: The Art Endowment Scholarship is awarded annually each spring semester. Students are nominated by faculty members and are then required to submit a portfolio for review by the faculty. Recipients are then selected based on grade point averages overall and in art and on artistic ability. Recipients of this award are also required to have a show exhibited their work during the first summer school semester in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery.
  2. MARION ST. JOHN BAKER SCHOLARSHIP: The Marion St. John [pronounced “sinn jinn”] Baker Scholarship was established in 1990 by Paul Culp and Joan Bowler Culp in honor of their friendship with Mrs. Baker and to perpetuate her memory. Mrs. Baker lived in Sydney, Australia and was active in artistic circles. She championed often-controversial political causes, e.g. nuclear bans, Aboriginal rights, and government aid to the arts. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and students may submit three-dimensional works of sculpture, jewelry or ceramics to be juried. Recipient must be a good general student with a 3.0 grade point average overall, must show outstanding abilities in one of the three-dimensional art forms such as ceramics, jewelry or sculpture and have at least one full year of studies left to complete at Sam Houston State University. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  3. MARJORIE LEVERTON BOEHME SCHOLARSHIP FOR ART STUDENTS: The Marjorie Leverton Boehme Scholarship for Art Students was established in 1999 by Marjorie Leverton Boehme to provide financial assistance Art students. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient of this scholarship. The recipient of this award must be a full time student at Sam Houston State University of Junior or Senior status majoring in Art.
  4. ELKINS LAKE KUNTZ-NELSON MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Elkins Lake Kuntz-Nelson Memorial Art Scholarship Endowment was established in 1988 by the board of Elkins Lake Art League to enable young artists to pursue and encourage excellence in painting. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and paintings submitted for this scholarship may be of any medium.   5. HAL FULGHAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: The Hal Fulgham Memorial Scholarship was established in 1990 in the memory of Hal Fulgham. Recipients of this award must be an entering freshman student at Sam Houston State University majoring in Photography and submit work for review to the Art Department. Recipients must also have been a Texas resident for at least five years. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art Office.
  6. EDWARD GEESLIN ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Edward Geeslin Art Endowment was established in 1971 by retired professor Edward Davis Geeslin to encourage deserving young men and women of good character who have demonstrated their potential successful achievement as students and are in need of financial assistance. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient.
  7. WELDON HALL JR. SCHOLARSHIP: The Weldon Hall Jr. Endowment in Art was established in 2004 in honor of Weldon Hall Jr. Recipients of this award must be an entering freshman student at Sam Houston State University majoring in Art and submit artwork to the art department for review by the faculty. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  8. RUTH WYNNE THOMASON HOLLINSHEAD ENDOWMENT FUND IN ART: The Ruth Wynne Thomason Hollinshead Endowment Fund in Art was established in 2002 in memory of Ruth Wynne Thomason Hollinshead. The recipient of this scholarship must be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in any discipline within the Art Department, demonstrate financial need, and maintain a 3.0 grade point average overall. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient.
  9. EMMETTE JACKSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The Emmette Jackson Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 in honor of Emmette Jackson to provide financial assistance to worthy photography majors. This scholarship is awarded annually each Spring and a committee of photography faculty shall select the recipient of the scholarship. Recipients must be enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in Photography, maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall, and be classified as a junior or senior.
  10. JESSE H. JONES AND MARY GIBBS JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The Jesse H. Jones and Mary Gibbs Jones Endowed Scholarships are awarded to outstanding full-time resident Liberal Arts or Graphic Arts majors who have maintained a 3.0 grade point average at Sam Houston State University. Jesse H. Jones and Mary Gibbs Jones Endowed Scholars will receive $500 per semester for the fall and spring semester following the award.   11. STANLEY E. LEA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The Stanley E. Lea Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 by retired professor Stanley E. Lea who wished to provide financial assistance to art students studying printmaking. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring. Students may submit 1-5 prints (excluding photos and computer graphics) to be juried for this scholarship. The recipient of this scholarship must be an Art major, of sophomore, junior or senior status, maintain a 3.0 grade point average in Art and exhibit exceptional creative talent and creative ability. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  12. CLEM OTIS MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Clem Otis Memorial Art Scholarship Endowment was established by the Otis family in 1983 in honor of Mrs. Clem Otis. She was an accomplished landscape artist who touched the memories of people across the country with her oils and acrylics. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and paintings submitted for this scholarship must be done in oil. The recipient of this scholarship must have a 2.5 grade point average at Sam Houston State University.
  13. CHARLES PEBWORTH SCULPTURE SCHOLARSHIP: The Charles Pebworth Sculpture Endowment was established in 1993 in honor of Charles Pebworth’s 36 years of dedicated service, to enable young students to pursue their studies in sculpture. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty will provide nominations or students may nominate themselves by submitting a portfolio of sculptural works. The recipient of this scholarship must have a 3.0 grade point average in Art, exhibit outstanding abilities in sculpture and must have one full year of studies left to complete at Sam Houston State University. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  14. POLLEY ART AWARDS: The Polley Art Award was established in 1970 by retired professor Joseph Polley Paine to encourage excellence in painting. Mr. Paine placed money from the sale of his paintings into this award fund during the last years of his teaching career and dedicated it to the memory of the Polley family and its Texas pioneer heritage. This scholarship is awarded annually during the spring semester, based on work that was completed during the immediately preceding fall semester painting class. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  15. JAMES B. AND MARILYN C. SHEPARD SCHOLARSHIP: The James B. and Marilyn C. Shepard Endowment Fund was established in 1999. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient. The recipient must be a native born US citizen, be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in Art and maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall. First preference will be for students studying sculpture.
  16. STUDENT ART ASSOCIATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU and majoring in any discipline within the Department of Art, and be an active member of the Student Art Association.  An overall GPA of 2.75 is required.  A GPA of 3.25 is required in their major.  Application deadline is the Spring semester.  For additional information, contact the Art Department, (936)294-4311, SHSU Box 2089  Huntsville, TX 77341
  17. MADISON AND MARTHA WOLFE PHOTOGRAPHY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  Amount per year varies.   18. KENNETH ZONKER ENDOWMENT: The Kenneth Zonker Endowment Fund was established in 2003 by the Zonker family in honor of Kenneth Zonker. This scholarship is awarded annually and a committee within the Art Department selects the recipient. The recipient must be a full time student at Sam Houston State University majoring in Art, submit one piece of art work (in any medium) that was not used for a class project or grade, and was created without supervision, and maintain a 3.0 grade point average in Art. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.

At present, all scholarships offered by the Department of Biological Sciences have the following common criteria:

  1. BIOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester, two consecutive semesters, four to six awards, sophomore, junior, or senior status, 3.0 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.

BIOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester, two consecutive semesters, two to four awards for beginning freshmen in upper 25 percent of high school graduating class, minimum score of 1000 on SAT or 24 on ACT; must maintain 3.0 GPA at SHSU, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  3. CLAUDE MCLEOD ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500-$750 per semester, two consecutive semesters, junior or senior status, 3.0 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  4. EMMA NORMAND ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500-$750 per semester, two consecutive semesters, junior or senior status, 3.0 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  5. JAMES D. LONG BIOLOGY ENDOWMENT: Endowment is established to provide student academic scholarships and support for student research projects in the Dept of Biological Sciences. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to receive assistance from this endowment, as are entering freshmen. Applicants for Long Student Research Awards must submit a written proposal in the format specified by the selection committee and approved by a supervising faculty member indicating how the award will be used. Amount unspecified, 3.0 GPA required.
  6. PATRICK NEIL O'BRYANT ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester; two consecutive semesters; one award; sophomore, junior or senior Environmental Science major; 2.5 GPA; spring semester contingent upon maintaining satisfactory progress toward degree.
  7. JAMES PATRICK WEBER ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AWARD: $200 fall semester only, 3.0 GPA, sophomore, junior, or senior Environmental Science major.
  8. S.R. WARNER ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500-$750 per semester, two consecutive semesters, junior or senior status, 3.0 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  9. TURNER BIOLOGY/ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: $600 per year; Recipient must be a full-time student accepted or enrolled at Sam Houston State University and have transferred from a community college or is an international student. Recipient must have maintained an overall GPA of 3.0 over the previous two consecutive semesters and continue to maintain an overall 3.0 GPA. Financial need is a consideration but not a determining factor in the selection process.
  10. WILSON-WARNER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN THE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES: $1000-1500 per semester two consecutive semesters, one or two awards, sophomore, junior, or senior status, 3.5 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining a B average.
  11. EVERETT WILSON BIOLOGY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate, graduate or transfer student from a community college, or an international student, majoring in biology or pre-professional studies, and demonstrate financial need.  Preference will be given to a qualifying international student.  Two letters of recommendation from professors who are well-acquainted with the applicant must accompany the scholarship application.  3.0 GPA required.  Application deadline is February 1.
  12. EMMA NORMAND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student, in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in biological sciences, and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.5 is required.
  13. DR. HAROLD F. DAVID BERNSHAUSEN MUSIC ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies; Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students majoring in an academic program in the School of Music, be an excellent instrumentalist or vocalist, demonstrate financial need, and be from the city of Yoakum or Lavaca county or Wharton county. This is a four-year award as long as the recipient continues to meet the criteria. 2.0 GPA requirement.
  6. ELAINE McDONALD MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP: $300 per year. Scholarship established for students majoring in music and/or currently performing in a major ensemble in the School of Music (choir, band, orchestra, or accompanying). Recipient must have achieved sophomore or higher standing and have been enrolled full time at SHSU for one year prior to the semester of the scholarship audition and be enrolled full time during the semester of the audition. Members of Sigma Alpha lota are eligible to audition for the scholarship. GPA requirement is 2.85. Deadline for application submission is February of each year.
  7. INEZ MEACHUM POWELL AWARDS IN MUSIC: $250. per year, two students selected, Music major, outstanding academic attainment, character of unquestioned merit, anticipating one more year in residence. Not for incoming Freshmen.

Theatre scholarships:
 

  1. WILLIAM F. BROWN AWARD: $2500 for year; awarded by Theatre faculty to a Theatre or Musical Theatre major, demonstrating financial need, maintaining an overall GPA of 3.0.
  2. MARGARET A. CONWELL MEMORIAL MUSICAL THEATRE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate majoring in Musical Theatre. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor; GPA 3.0; Application deadline, April 1st.
  3. ERICA CZERWINSKI SCHOLARSHIP: $2000 for year; $1000 per semester; Student must be enrolled and in good standing majoring in Musical Theatre, have a minimum overall 2.0 GPA, and demonstrate some financial need.
  4. KEVIN J. DODSON THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP: $2000 per year; $1000 a semester, awarded to upper level Theatre majors with an emphasis in directing. Application to theatre faculty, based on talent, grades, and citizenship.
  5. RUTH WYNN THOMASON HOLLINSHEAD ENDOWMENT FUND: Scholarships soon to be awarded to Theatre majors who focus on costume design or construction.

  7. JIM AND JULEE MILLER THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP FUND: $1,000 per year; Recipients must be full-time students, sophomore, junior, senior, majoring in theatre. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor; GPA 3.0; Application deadline, April 1st.
  8. MARK MITCHELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $750 per semester for continuing students given by Former Student Association. Awards are granted through the Theatre faculty.
  9. NICHOLSON-BOZEMAN SCHOLARSHIPS IN MUSICAL THEATRE: $1000 per semester, to continuing Musical Theatre students. Applications must be made to Theatre faculty. Awards are based on talent, grades and need.
  10. ERICA STARR MEMORIAL THEATRE ENDOWMENT: Students in good academic standing majoring in theatre design and technology (lights, costume, and scenery) are given first consideration. Students with financial need and an overall 2.0 GPA are encouraged to apply.
  11. CHARLES A. SCHMIDT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per year, given to a continuing Theatre major who maintains a 3.0 GPA, demonstrates good citizenship and financial need.
  12. BILL & ANN STOKES SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of scholarship varies per year; Recipients must be full-time sophomore, junior or senior students, majoring in Theatre and Musical Theatre, demonstrate financial need, and be a student in good standing in the theatre department. 3.0 GPA; Application deadline March 15th.
  13. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CONTINUING DRAMA MAJORS: Available through the Theatre Program and Alpha Psi Omega. Number and amount of scholarships fluctuate. Theatre Program awards are based on grades, talent and need. Alpha Psi Omega awards are based on talent, participation in the department, citizenship, and need.
  14. SCHOLARSHIPS OF INCOMING THEATRE MAJORS: $1000 awarded to incoming transfer and freshmen theatre majors each fall. New students apply by audition, letters of recommendation, and interviews.

CHI TAU EPSILON SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior student by fall, maintain an overall GPA of 3.0, be an active member in good standing of Chi Tau Epsilon, complete the application for "Dances @ 8" and submit a list of community service hours, attend pre-showings for "Dances @ 8", choreograph a piece for "Dances @ 8".   5. DANCE EXCELLENCE AWARD: Amounts vary. Covers one year. Recipient must be a continuous Dance Major who has made exemplary contributions to dance, while maintaining a 3.0 overall GPA.
  6. UNDERGRADUATE PERFORMANCE SCHOLARSHIPS: $500 one term, $1000 per year. Recipient must be a Dance Major and have an overall 2.8 GPA. Also, he/she must exhibit through audition excellent performance skills and fulfill performance responsibilities as assigned.
  7. SHSU DANCE AND THEATRE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,500 per year.  Recipients must be full-time students in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in dance or theatre, be interviewed by the selection committee to discuss his or her educational goals, and demonstrate financial need. GPA requirement is 3.0.  Application deadline is April 1, 2008.

  2. DALE BENKE SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded to outstanding Sam Houston students majoring in Technology. Awards are based on student needs, contributions to SHSU, the department, and participation in technology related student clubs/organizations.
The number and/or amount of each award are determined by the amount of income earned on the respective scholarship endowment.

  4. DR. JAMES E. GILMORE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Scholarship established in honor of Dr James E. Gilmore, former Dean of the College of Business Administration. Recipient must be a full-time student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline in the College of Business Administration and have sophomore, junior or senior standing. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. GPA requirement 3.0.
  5. WESLEY L. OAKES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies; Recipients must be "well-rounded", full-time students majoring in any discipline in the College of Business Administration; be a junior or senior, having completed at least 60 hours of coursework prior to the semester that the scholarship is received; and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students from Limestone, Freestone or Leon Counties. If no students from these counties qualify for the scholarship, a student from central Texas may be considered.
