Cooperative program leading to the Associate in Arts Degree (AA) at Houston Community College and the Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA), the Bachelor of Arts Degree with Teaching Certification (BA), the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (BFA), or the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with Teaching Certification (BFA) at Sam Houston State University

Articulation Agreement for 2004-2006 Catalogue Years

San Antonio College (SAC) and Sam Houston State University (SHSU) proudly present a joint program allowing students to complete the Associate in Arts Degree at SAC and utilize the majority of courses to transfer to the Baccalaureate Degree in Art/ Dance (BA) or the Baccalaureate Degree in Fine Arts/ Dance at SHSU. Students are encouraged to seek advice from Academic Advisors to ensure maximum transferability of courses between institutions.

The Associate of Arts (AA) Degree at SAC requires the completion of 70 hours; 43 hours are core curriculum. Because there are no majors at SAC, students who are interested in pursuing a four-year degree in dance are encouraged to take as many dance classes as possible at SAC, in addition to their core classes. The core curriculum classes at SAC meet the core curriculum requirements at SHSU.

The BA in Dance at SHSU does not require an audition. Admission to SHSU is sufficient. The BA requires a minimum of 36 hours of dance, 18 hours in the minor, 42 hours of core classes, and 14 hours of foreign language.

The BFA Degree in Dance at SHSU is selective and requires an audition from all applicants. Auditions are held each semester. The BFA includes a minimum of 61 hours of dance and 42 hours of core classes. There are no language requirements. There are no minor requirements.

The BA Degree in Dance with Teaching Certification at SHSU requires 36 hours of dance, 18 hours of minor, 42 hours of core classes, 14 hours of foreign language, 24 hours of Student Teaching Preparation, successful completion of student teaching, successful completion of the appropriate certification exams (ExCET, TOPT, or TexES), and recommendation through the Sam Houston Center for Professional Development and Educational Partnerships for the State Board for Educator Certification.

In addition to the BA or BFA, a Secondary Teaching Certification is available at SHSU. It requires an additional 24 hours of Student Teaching Preparation, successful completion of the appropriate certification exams (ExCET, TOPT, or TexES). A recommendation for Secondary Teaching Certification comes from the Sam Houston Center for Professional Development and Education Partnerships for the State Board for Educator Certification.

All dance majors must repeat DNC 110 (crew) for four semesters. Bachelor of Arts Candidates must complete one semester each of DNC 333, 334, and 430. Candidates for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree must be registered in both ballet and modern dance technique each semester after the freshman year. They must also complete at least two semesters each of DNC 430, 433, and 434. DNC 333, 334, 430, 433, and 434 are open only by audition or permission of the instructor. Candidates for the BA must complete requirements for a minor field of study to graduate. The BFA does not require a minor.

The following tables list courses leading towards the BA in Dance, and the BFA in Dance. Teaching Certification is available through the College of Education . The SAC courses listed below are only approximations of classes that are available. They are not listed in a particular order because they are not offered regularly. Because there are no majors at SAC, the classes listed are recommended by the Chair of the Dance Program for students interested in completing a four-year degree at SHSU.

**SHSU requirements for a degree in criminal justice.

A maximum of 66 credit hours (excluding kinesiology) may be transferred from a community college to Sam Houston State University. Students should carefully select courses to complete the associate degree while minimizing the number of hours that might exceed the 66 hour cap for transfer credit.

All Evaluations are based on the SHSU 2002-2004 catalogue and San Antonio College. The respective catalogues are the final word if a discrepancy appears between this pamphlet and a catalogue

SHSU courses with 300 and 400 level numbers are considered as upper division and must be completed at SHSU.  Credit may not be transferred from a community college for upper division courses.

Sam Houston State University and San Antonio College are both accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
