Description
The Master of Education in International Literacy is designed for teachers of English as a Second Language. The program addresses the theories of language instruction and incorporates research based best practices for teaching English language learners. In addition to receiving the MEd, our graduates earn a certificate in second language instruction and an International Literacy certificate from Sam Houston State University.
Graduates of this program will be able to:
- Articulate theories, processes, and principles of language and literacy acquisition
- Prepare research proposals
- Examine the linguistic, sociological, cultural, cognitive, and psychological bases of literacy (reading, writing, listening, and speaking)
- Identify instructional strategies and materials that promote the acquisition of literacy for English language learners
- Evaluate informal and formal assessment for English Language Learners (ELL)
- Engage in reflective analysis of their own beliefs and systematic inquiry into diverse cultures in order to construct a pedagogy that makes diversity an explicit part of the curriculum
- Integrate technology to enhance the learning opportunities of English language
learners - Apply effective strategies for teaching English using a multicultural lens
- Demonstrate sensitivity to cultural, linguistic, and ethnic diversity
