Degree Program Overview

The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program at Sam Houston State University is nationally recognized and accredited by the Council For The Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP) and Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America. This reputation for excellence keeps our graduates in high demand by school district administrators.

The PETE program is primarily intended for students interested in teaching physical education in grades PreK-12.

The kinesiology portion of the coursework focuses on the study of human movement with particular attention paid to motor development and performance, movement analyses, content knowledge and pedagogical skills required for teaching PreK-12 physical education. Examples of course topics include how to apply theoretical concepts to designing learning tasks, supervising and organizing a class, assessing students’ performance, and adapting activities.

All students seeking teacher certification in physical education must participate in field experience in local schools. The three levels of experience progress from observations and reflections to lesson planning and application of acquired knowledge and skills to 14 weeks of student-teaching in the final semester before graduation.
