Animal Science- Equine Science Minor, Bachelor of Science

Available: On Campus

The 19-hour minor in Equine Science may be selected to accompany any approved major at Sam Houston State University except Interdisciplinary Agriculture.

The Equine Science minor allows undergraduate students the opportunity to specialize in equine science through a combination of experiential learning activities, training courses, and traditional classroom lectures.

A variety of courses on equine care, handling, nutrition, health, management, marketing and behavior provides students with increased hands-on skills and foundational science that offer a competitive advantage in an ever-changing industry.

Student Groups and Competitive Teams

Students are encouraged to participate in the Collegiate Horseman’s Association (CHA). These activities provide opportunities for its members to explore and become involved in many aspects of the equine industry. Anyone with an interest in horses is invited to join—regardless of their experience. Competitive teams include the Intercollegiate Equestrian Team that competes in IHSA events, Horse Judging Team and the Versatility Ranch Horse Team. Competitive Teams travel throughout the United States competing at major equine events. Other popular clubs include Block and Bridle, Collegiate FFA, Collegiate Farm Bureau and the Rodeo Team.

Facilities

The Agriculture Complex, located a short distance from the main campus, includes horse stalls, round pens, a large indoor arena, and a state-of-the-art panel walker.
