Earning a degree in theatre from SHSU means working with and learning from some of the top professors in your area of study. All of the professors are working actors, designers, directors, etc. outside of Sam Houston so their knowledge is invaluable. All students and professors in the department are on a first name basis - the individual care they have for each student really shows how passionate they are and the desire they have for us as students to succeed. It's easy to go to school, learn the lessons, and pass the tests - but at SHSU you get real world knowledge and experience throughout your 4 years here so that you feel well equipped and prepared to take on a career after graduation.
One of the greatest experiences of my college career is getting to direct a production of John Logan's Red in the 2013-2014 season of the SHSU Department of Theatre & Musical Theatre. As a theatre artist one of the most important (and fun) aspects of your training process is the ability to get your "hands dirty" and actually practice doing the thing you're training to do. I'm proud to say that both the classes our department offers as well as our production season provide many opportunities for students, undergraduate students, to engage in projects and shows that will challenge them to put the things they're learning to use and grow as artists. The ability to direct a fully supported production in the departmental season is a fairly unique aspect of the SHSU program that isn't offered at every school. Being one of the few students selected by the faculty for this opportunity was a huge honor but also reflects the great trust, and vested interest, the faculty have in me. Knowing that my professors care about my training, my present and future success, and know me well enough to put that level of trust in me speaks volumes about the relationships SHSU faculty form with their students. Throughout the challenging process of directing my first full-length play I constantly felt supported by both my faculty mentor as well as by the entire faculty and staff of our department. Additionally I felt so much love and encouragement from my peers in the department. It was really wonderful to know that I am part of a community of scholars and artists that supports each other, cares about each other, and wants to see each other succeed. So in short: coming to SHSU for a degree in theatre is the right choice because we have many opportunities to engage in exciting hands-on training for actors; directors; designers; stage managers; and technicians, first-class faculty who get to know you personally, and a community of talented driven students who support and care each other.
