Degree Program Overview

The Mathematics Education Program at Sam Houston State University is a hands-on experience with instruction from expert faculty that prepares you to be a great mathematics teacher.

The BA and BS in Mathematics with Secondary Education certification offers the ability to get certified in two teaching fields at once.

Students interested in teaching at the 8th-12th grade-level will pursue either a Bachelor of Science (BS) or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Mathematics with a minor in Secondary Education. These students have the option to minor in an additional teaching field, such as Science.

Students interested in teaching at the 4th-8th grade-level will major in Interdisciplinary Studies (Teaching) through the College of Education and will minor in Mathematics or Mathematics/Science composite.

All students pursuing teacher certification will be required to participate in student teaching in one of the many school districts that have partnered with SHSU. Several districts hire their student teachers full-time after graduation.
