Biological Sciences and Environmental ScienceArticulation Agreement for 2002 and 2004 Catalogue Years Panola College and SHSU proudly present a joint program allowing a student to complete the Associate Degree at Panola College and utilize the majority of course work to complete the BS in Biology at SHSU. Students are encouraged to seek advice from Academic Advisors to ensure maximum transferability of course work between institutions. The Associate of Science degree at Panola College requires a 61 hours. Students are encouraged to complete a minimum of 16 hours of transferable courses in biology and chemistry as electives. The Bachelor of Science at SHSU requires a major consisting of a minimum of 36 hours (12 advanced taken in residence at SHSU), an 18 hour minor (6 advanced taken in residence at SHSU), 52-54 hour core, 6 hours math (7 for biology) and 8 hours of lab science (4 hours in two different fields). It is highly desirable for applicants to SHSU to have completed at least the equivalent of BIO138/118 and BIO139/119 while working on the Associate degree. Completing 8 or more hours of transferable chemistry courses is strongly encouraged. The math sequence leading toward graduation from SHSU with a BS degree in biology requires 4 hours of calculus (Math 142) plus calculus II (Math 143) that may be completed at Panola College or an advanced course in statistics taked at SHSU. The following table lists courses leading towards a concentration /
major in Biology at each institution.
Forensic Science and Biology Transfer students seeking the Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Forensics emphasis should consider a minor in Chemistry and/or Criminal Justice. The required first two years of core courses for the Forensics emphasis in all academic areas (e.g., math, science, english, history, etceteras) are the same as the above listed courses for the major in Biology. The emphasis in Forensics is accomplished by selecting from appropriate upper division courses (junior and senior level). A maximum of 66 credit hours (excluding kinesiology) may be transferred from a community college to Sam Houston State University. Students should carefully select courses to complete the associate degree while minimizing the number of hours that might exceed the 66 hour cap for transfer credit. In addition to the above courses, all courses in the State of Texas Common Core may be transferred between institutions. Students may transfer to SHSU at any time as long as they meet SHSU's admission requirements. Students close to completing the requirements for the Associate degree are encouraged to consider the potential advantages of completing the associate degree. One way to accomplish this is to transfer courses taken at SHSU back to the community college to complete degree requirements. Properly selected courses may be used to satisfy degree requirements at both institutions simultaneously. The applicant is encouraged to speak to an academic advisor familiar with the programs of all institutions involved to maximize the amount of transferable credit. Notes:
Texas residents who have graduated from high school within the past 16 months with the Recommended or Distinguished curriculum, or received your first Associate's Degree within the past 12 months may qualify for the Towards Excellence, & Success (TEXAS) Grant, a state financial aid program. Please review the basic qualifications. If you believe you qualify, contact your respective community college or university financial aid office.
