GOTH ROCK

A postpunk style evolving out of the London club scene of the early 1980s, goth featured moody, typically minor-key, melodies and brooding song lyrics. Both musicians and fans reinforced the musicís dark aspects by wearing black clothing, dyed black hair, and black makeup highlights set against a starkly pale foundation.

Despite a strong cult following, the genre has received comparatively little press attention. This may be due in part to its preoccupation with themes such as alienation, depression, death, and suicide. The Cure are the best known goth band; others include Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Joy Division, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Alien Sex Fiend, Sex Gang Children, Sisters of Mercy, and Christian Death.
