Elementary Education ProgramAcademic FoundationsArticulation Agreement for 2008 and 2010 Catalogue YearsThe College of Education has updated transfer guidelines to reflect the changes in certification levels for the State of Texas, which will go into place with the 2008-2010 catalog. Degree plan check sheets for each of the new programs have been included for planning purposes. Each one reflects TCCNs for the core courses. If a student is pursuing EC-4 certification and will finish school by Spring 2010, before the EC-4 certificate is discontinued, they will follow the previous articulation plan that is currently posted and use the 2006 catalog ACS degree plans. We intend to honor the previous articulation agreements for any student who can graduate in time to receive an EC-4 certificate. If they can't make that deadline, they must transition to the EC-6 program and should come for advising to our Academic Advising office in TEC 217 as early as possible so that they take the correct Community College courses. It is important to note that even though college students may come to SHSU as core complete from a Community College, the degree plans for EC-6 or 4-8 teacher certification require KIN215. If they take KIN215 at SHSU, it counts for the core and the degree, if they don't take it at a Community College, they must take it here because it addresses standards that teaching candidates are tested on in order to obtain their teaching license. Specifically, a student seeking certification may not substitute an activity transfer course for KIN 215. Please also note that because the Early Childhood courses in the new EC-6 plans have changed, there are no equivalent courses in our EC-6 program for the TECA courses at the Community Colleges.DRAFTBS/IDS 4MS

Major Teaching Field |
Major Teaching Field |
* Courses required in some 8-12 teaching fields. Refer to Undergraduate Catalog for your major.
** Secondary Teaching Notes: Students should seek advisement to determine whether they are seeking a B.S or B.A. degree. The B. A. programs require 8 hours of science courses, Speech, Philosophy and 14 hours of Foreign Language. The B. S. programs require 16 hours of science courses,
*** KIN 215 addresses EC-6 Physical Education standards and is required for any EC-6 or 4-8 program. Activity courses do not apply to the EC-6 degree plans.
Secondary Teaching candidates seeking an AAT degree should complete core coursework at the community college, then complete the requirement for 12 hours of teaching field content at SHSU. For community colleges who permit this arrangement, SHSU will ” reverse transfer” those hours to reflect completion of the AAT degree at the originating institution.
A maximum of 66 credit hours (excluding kinesiology) may be transferred from a community college to Sam Houston State University. Students should carefully select courses to complete the associate degree while minimizing the number of hours that might exceed the 66 hour cap for transfer credit.
Every effort has been made to insure the accuracy of this guideline. In the event of a discrepancy between this guide and catalogue of a participating institution, the catalogue is always the primary source.
Notes:
GEO 131/111 is preferred over GEL 133/113HED 282 is preferred over FCS 167 BIOL 1406 and BIOL 1407 will continue to be accepted for the biology requirement through the 2002 academic year. These classes are no longer availabe for students seeking certification at Sam Houston State University. They have been replaced by General Botany and General Zoology with the appropriate labs. New students should take the Botany/Zoology course sequence.
SHSU catalogue courses with 300 and 400 level numbers are considered as upper division and must be completed at SHSU. Credit may not be transferred from a community college for upper division courses.
Disclaimer: All education programs are subject to change by the legislature (i.e. The State Board of Educator Certification and The Higher Education Coordinating Board). All schools must adopt these standards at the time they are published.
Applications for admission to SHSU may be obtained online at https://www.applytexas.org/adappc/commonapp.wbx or by calling Undergraduate Admissions at (936) 294-1828. Extensive information is also available on the SHSU web site at http://www.shsu.edu/. Please view http://www.shsu.edu/~edu_www/ for a more detailed listing of degree options within the College of Education and Applied Science including contact information.
