Articulation Agreement

Cooperative program leading to the Associate of Science Degree and the
Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry at Sam Houston State University

The Department of Chemistry at Sam Houston State University is committed to providing an educational environment conducive to scholarship, intellectual development, and the acquisition of a foundation of knowledge and techniques required of professional chemists. The Department of Chemistry is approved by the American Chemical Society.

Chemistry majors may pursue the Bachelor of Science in chemistry for professional chemists that leads to American Chemical Society certification and prepares students for graduate studies in traditional fields or for careers in industry.  Or chemistry majors may pursue the Bachelor of Science in chemistry for other technical careers that allows for greater elective choice and is a wonderful option for students interested in other professional schools.  Another option is the Bachelor of Science in forensic chemistry that prepares students for careers combining a knowledge of chemistry and the legal system.  Students completing this degree can pursue opportunities in various forensic labs across the country, or can continue their education either in the graduate program in Forensic Science, or in graduate programs that are more traditional.

For those students interested in teaching at the high school level, the Bachelor of Science in Composite Science with an emphasis in Chemistry is offered.

Participants of 2+2 programs at community colleges are especially welcome and encouraged to complete the Bachelor of Science degree at Sam Houston State University.  Additional information may be found at http://www.shsu.edu/~chemistry.

The following table lists transfer courses leading to a concentration/major in Chemistry. It is extremely important for the student to complete two years of chemistry (general and organic), a year of calculus and a year of physics prior to transfer to Sam Houston State University if the student intends to take junior-level chemistry courses upon arrival.

In addition to the above courses, all courses in the State of Texas Common Core may be transferred between institutions.

Students may transfer to SHSU at any time as long as they meet SHSU's admission requirements. Students close to completing the requirements for the associate degree are encouraged to consider the potential advantages of completing the associate degree. One way to accomplish this is to transfer courses taken at SHSU back to the community college to complete degree requirements. Properly selected courses may be used to satisfy degree requirements at both institutions simultaneously. The applicant is encouraged to speak to an academic advisor familiar with the programs of all institutions involved to maximize the amount of transferable credit.

The Core Curriculum at Sam Houston State University contains 42 semester credit hours, encompassing six component areas. Each component area has a minimum credit hour requirement and a set of specific courses that may be used to satisfy the requirement. The chart below details the Sam Houston State University courses and their Texas Common Course Number (TCCN) equivalents that comprise SHSU's core curriculum.  Course requirements to meet the university foreign language component of the Bachelor of Arts degree have been included for convenience.

Many departments require specific courses from core component areas to meet degree requirements. Selecting departmentally specifed core courses to complete university core requirements reduces the total number of hours required to graduate.

Degrees require a minimum of 120 hours with 42 advanced hours (300 and 400 level courses).  Some degrees require additional hours.  All students are required to complete at least six writing enhanced courses accumulating a minimum, of 18 semester hours towards degree completion.  Six of the hours must come from the student’s major field of study.  SHSU students MUST complete ENG 164, ENG 165, Core Composite Area 2, and one-half of Composite Area 3 prior to enrollment in any upper-level class.  In general, the Bachelor of Arts degree requires 8 hours of lab science and the Bachelor of Science degree requires 16 hours of lab science.  Applicants for the Bachelor of Arts degree should consult their major department web page for foreign language requirements.  Many colleges and programs have additional prerequisites for upper-level classes.
Prior to enrolling in core classes, students are encouraged to review specific degree requirements for their major.  Selection of major specified core courses may reduce the total number of hours required for graduation.
Students are encouraged to select the university catalog offering them the most advantages with respect to degree completion.  The respective university and/or college catalog selected for graduation determines final degree requirements.
