Mission

The mission of the Industrial Sciences and Technology Program is to provide an educational program designed to provide an educational experience in the areas of management, leadership and technology for students to prepare to meet industry challenges for the 21st century.

Highlights

The Industrial Sciences and Technology Program offers courses in three different facilities. The Industrial Technology Building, located on Avenue M, provides students with hands-on experiences in drafting, water systems, and electrical systems, as well as metal, wood and concrete construction for residential and commercial structures. The computer-aided drafting lab (32 stations), housed in Room 220 in the Farrington building, provides students with experiences with several design programs. The electricity and electronics courses are offered in the Electronics Laboratory in Room 201 in the Thomason Building.

Technology students learn to draw upon the principles of management, physical sciences, technology of industry, liberal arts and basic engineering for the solution of problems involving industrial products, services, materials and processes, and the supervision and management of personnel.

Suggested Minors

Industrial Technology students typically choose minors from program areas within the department (see Minor area), while others will select from the College of Business Administration such as General Business Administration, Management, Marketing, etc. They also choose minors in Agricultural Mechanization, Computer Sciences, Criminal Justice and many others. These are typical minors; however, students should choose a minor that best suits their needs and interests.

Internships

The internship in industrial technology is intended to provide experience-based learning opportunities for students in their respective discipline of study. Students generally seek internship experience at the end of their sophomore or junior year. The course identifi ed for internship credit in industrial technology is IT 490 - Directed Studies. Internships may be arranged through student contact with providers or through departmental faculty and staff announcements and postings. All internships must receive departmental approval through application prior to the initiation of the internship. Maximum credit for internship is six (6) credit hours.

Scholarships

Stephen Randel Scholarship: Awarded to an outstanding student participating in the Brazos Valley Regional Technology Student Competition held at Sam Houston State University each year during the month of April.
Dale Benke Scholarship: Awarded to an outstanding Sam Houston student majoring in the Technology Program. This award is based on student need, contribution to Sam Houston State University, the Technology Program, and participation in technology-related student clubs/organizations.
Myron A. Balcom Industrial Technology Scholarship: Awarded to an outstanding student
majoring in Industrial Sciences and Technology. This award is based on need, academics
and participation in departmental student clubs/organizations.

The Department of Technology at Sam Houston State University was established as a department in 1912 to prepare manual arts teachers. The department still offers a teaching option; however, the curriculum is primarily oriented to providing educational foundations for those people interested in employment in technical or professional positions in industry.

The Department of Agricultural and Industrial Sciences at Sam Houston State University was originally established in 1910. Upon passage of the Smith-Hughes Act in 1917 Sam Houston State was one of the first universities in the country and the first west of the Mississippi River authorized to train Vocational Agriculture and Industrial Technology teachers. Preparing teachers for Secondary Agriscience and Industrial Technology programs continues to be a major focus of the Department. However, in the 1950’s, the Department began offering a variety of other academic specialties and today offers emphases in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Horticulture and Crop Science, Animal Science, Agricultural Mechanization, Industrial Technology, Construction, Design and Development and Electronics. Students in any specialization may seek Secondary Teacher Certification in lieu of a minor. Additional undergraduate curricula are offered in Animal Science / Wildlife Ecology and Pre-Veterinary Medicine and the Department serves as the academic advisement center for students interested in the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree.

There are currently 950+ students enrolled in Agricultural and Industrial Sciences at SHSU. Enrollment in the program has grown by over 50% during the past 10 years. Career opportunities in agriculture are abundant and diverse. United States Department of Agriculture and Department of Commerce research predicts that the job opportunities will be abundant during the next decade for new graduates in the food, fiber, natural resources and ancillary industries, as well as in business and industry, construction, design, technology, banking, and a variety of public agencies. There are literally hundreds of possible career opportunities for those graduating with a degree in agricultural and industrial sciences. Many graduates from SHSU seek additional formal education through pursuit of masters and doctoral degrees.

Modern technology is an essential part of the totality of the human experience and as a discipline of study, is a complete part of knowledge. Technology, science, and the humanities interface to create today's body of formal knowledge. Technology is concerned with the use of scientific principles and technological methods to make things happen. Sam Houston State University's Department of Technology offers a broad and diversified, four-year program of study. We prepare students for a variety of careers including Construction Management, Design and Development, Electronics, Industrial Management, Production and Manufacturing, and Sales and Distribution.

For certification purposes the minor is considered to be Secondary Education. No other minor is required, but if an additional teaching field is desired, the student must meet the requirements of that teaching field. For the degree of Bachelor of Science and a teaching certificate with an integrated teaching field in technology, the student must complete a minimum of 48 semester hours in Industrial Technology and 21 semester hours in Secondary Education. The courses listed above are required of all students who are majoring in Industrial Technology and seeking a teaching certificate. The Core Curriculum at Sam Houston State University contains 42 semester credit hours, encompassing six component areas. Each component area has a minimum credit hour requirement and a set of specific courses that may be used to satisfy the requirement. Degrees require a minimum of 120 hours with 42 advanced hours (300 and 400 level courses). Some degrees require additional hours. All students are required to complete at least six writing enhanced courses accumulating a minimum, of 18 semester hours towards degree completion. Six of the hours must come from the student’s major field of study. SHSU students MUST complete ENG 164, ENG 165, Core Composite Area 2, and one-half of Composite Area 3 prior to enrollment in any upper-level class. In general, the Bachelor of Arts degree requires 8 hours of lab science and the Bachelor of Science degree requires 16 hours of lab science. Applicants for the Bachelor of Arts degree should consult their major department web page for foreign language requirements. Many colleges and programs have additional prerequisites for upper-level classes.
Prior to enrolling in core classes, students are encouraged to review specific degree requirements for their major. Selection of major specified core courses may reduce the total number of hours required for graduation.
Students are encouraged to select the university catalog offering them the most advantages with respect to degree completion. The respective university and/or college catalog selected for graduation determines final degree requirements.
