Honors Program

The Honors Program's policy on articulation says that students who attend any Great Plains Honors Council (GPHC) or National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) member school may transfer in up to 50% of the honors hours required to complete the Elliott T. Bowers Honors Program. Transfer students must have at least a 3.4 GPA to apply to the program. These students must apply to and be accepted by the Bowers Honors Program, then meet all of the graduation requirements of the Bowers Honors Program in order to graduate "With Honors" or "With Highest Honors".

This means that to graduate "With Honors" a student must have at least 24 hours of honors credit including 2 honors seminars. A transfer student who wishes to graduate "With Honors" may count up to 12 hours of transferred honors credit toward graduation. The student must complete no less than 12 hours of honors credit, including two honors seminars, at SHSU.

For the student who wishes to graduate "With Highest Honors", a student must have 30 hours of honors credit including two seminars and a 6-hour thesis project. A transfer student who wishes to graduate "With Highest Honors" may count up to 15 hours of transferred honors hours toward graduation. The student must complete no less than 15 hours of honors credit, including two honors seminars and the 6-hour thesis project, at SHSU.

In addition, any student who successfully graduates from 2-year honors program that is a member of GPHC or NCHC will be treated as a third-year member of the Bowers Program when awarding scholarships. In order to receive this benefit, the student must successfully complete all of the requirements of the 2-year honors program.

A maximum of 66 credit hours (excluding kinesiology) may be transferred from a community college to Sam Houston State University. Students should carefully select courses to complete the associate degree while minimizing the number of hours that might exceed the 66 hour cap for transfer credit.

In addition to the above courses, all courses in the State of Texas Common Core may be transferred between institutions.

Students may transfer to SHSU at any time as long as they meet SHSU's admission requirements. Students close to completing the requirements for the associate degree are encouraged to consider the potential advantages of completing the associate degree. One way to accomplish this is to transfer courses taken at SHSU back to the community college to complete degree requirements. Properly selected courses may be used to satisfy degree requirements at both institutions simultaneously. The applicant is encouraged to speak to an academic advisor familiar with the programs of all institutions involved to maximize the amount of transferable credit.
