“When you adopt a cause that you feel passionate about, when your reporting can make a difference in people’s lives, that’s journalism at its best.”

Shahira Amin is an Egyptian journalist and activist. The freelance journalist and former Deputy Head of Nile TV has covered countless issues. More recently, she has focused on controversial issues including female genital mutilation and sexual harassment in North Africa and the Middle East.

Amin drew international attention when she resigned on air during a broadcast to join anti-government protests in Cairo. Since then, she has faced countless threats, and baseless charges. Some have accused her of being a traitor and a spy.

“The hardships I’ve faced in recent years and the hostile environment I live in has made me a tougher person and prepared me to take challenges head on,” says Amin.

Amin trained with the Global Center in Burkina Faso and the Philippines. During her sessions, she focused on gender equity in reporting and on not giving in to community pressure. Her passion was clearly on display and participants gave her rave reviews.

"I am privileged to have worked with GCJD . The work the center does is of vital importance. I believe that the training in Burkina Faso and the Philippines was inspiring, eye opening  and motivating for the journalists who attended," says Amin.

Amin has been recognized by several international organizations for her journalism, and work to improve the status of women and children in her country. She says she stands firm in her mission to deliver the truth and provide a voice for her fellow citizens.
