In a world of ever shrinking resources, community journalists are often one-man-bands. They are sent out to cover potentially dangerous events in their community with no team, or training to ensure their personal safety.
This one of a kind training will give you the knowledge you need to stay safe on your daily beat.
SESSION ONE: Personal/Physical Safety (60 minutes)
You don’t need to travel to a war zone to run into trouble on the beat. This session will help sharpen your situational awareness skills, teach you how to plan for the unexpected, and react quickly and efficiently.
Trainer: Jim Napolitano, Security Expert, Former Secret Service, Law Enforcement
SESSION TWO: The Anatomy of a Riot and How to Stay Safe (60 minutes)
Covering a protest no matter how peaceful, can quickly turn into a dangerous assignment. This session will help you understand police crowd control tactics, introduce you to common munitions used by law enforcement, and strategies to stay safe while getting the story.
Trainer: Tom Wibert, New Braunfels Chief of Police
SESSION THREE: Basic First Aid (60 minutes)
This session will provide the bare essentials of what to do if you or a colleague is hurt while in the field. These vital lessons will help you manage until first responders arrive.
Trainer: Laura Dougherty, SHSU First-Aid & CPR Instructor
Registration Deadline: Monday, February 22, 2016
