GCJD was proud to participate in an inaugural  training for jail executives on September 27th for the American Jail Association.

The Jail Executive Development Program is designed to serve those who are chief executives, or are in a position to be promoted to chief executive. The training was hosted by the Correctional Management Institute at SHSU.

Sessions focused on various leadership skills. GCJD’s contribution focused on external communications, content development and social media. GCJD executive director Kelli Arena, who covered corrections as a journalist for CNN, led the training.

"Most of these leaders are not part of the digital generation, without a lot of knowledge of how they can craft and deliver their own message.  There is also a fear about what might go wrong about an increased public presence.  Kelli provided not only the status of the "media" in the world today, but gave a sense of comfort about how leaders can chart their own destiny using social media” said Susan McCampbell , the project’s lead instructor.

GJCD has previously conducted training at the Correctional Management Institute , offering internal and external communications training to a variety of corrections leaders. The institute offers a broad range of professional development programs and initiatives.

“The training fits well within our mission: to help entities that serve the public to be as transparent as possible, and to help them get critical, relevant information to the public in a timely manner”, said Arena.
