The Global Center for Journalism and Democracy is dedicated to promoting a free and vibrant press. Our mission is threefold: GCJD trains professional journalists, enhances industry and press relations, and educates our next generation of thought leaders.
Professional Journalist Training Programs:
We are working hard to show up at just the right time, in just the right places to help journalists succeed.
Our training programs focus on specific issues and are custom tailored to help journalists meet new challenges. We are committed to providing assistance with measurable results, to journalists who are passionate about educating themselves to better educate society.
We offer specialized training in key areas including: International and Criminal Justice, Gender Equity, Energy, Economy/Business, Religion, Health, the Environment, Politics and Elections, and Arts/Culture. We can also put together programs for journalists who need to get smart very quickly about other important issues.
Additionally, GCJD stands ready to work with journalists facing unique challenges including female journalists and journalists in conflict zones.
GCJD has formed partnerships that continue the mentoring process long after training stops. Additionally, GCJD continues to create a rich catalog of online resources.
Enhancing Industry and Press Relations:
GCJD understands that only focusing on reporters is not enough. We work with many organizations including political parties, corporations, law enforcement and corrections officials and civil society groups to help them understand how to effectively work with the press. Building strong, healthy relationships is essential and creates a solid democratic foundation.
GCJD provides a unique framework and training that strengthens an organization's ability to enhance positive relationships with global media.
Educating our Next Generation of Thought Leaders:
GCJD is committed to helping SHSU students by providing opportunities for them to travel to other countries for professional training. We also provide students with internship and mentorship opportunities and are committed to bringing international journalists and other experts to the campus (GCJD Lecture Series) to share their experiences in hopes of not only educating, but inspiring young minds. We are also excited to host meetings and retreats in the United States to provide journalists with an opportunity to learn from each other, share critical information and develop strong networks.
