  PRESIDENT ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

  1. CHARLES EGBERT HENRY & MARY FARRINGTON HENRY PRESIDENT'S ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester awarded to a sophomore pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree as an English major. Recipient must have an overall GPA during the preceding academic year of 3.0 and a minimum of 3.3 in English. Continuation of the scholarship for two additional years is contingent upon the recipient maintaining each semester the GPA criteria of the scholarship.
  2. THOMAS CLIFTON GIBBS & JAMESETTE HUNT PRESIDENT'S ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree as a business major. Recipient must: be in the upper 10 percent of their high school graduating class; score not less than 1340 (critical reading + math) on the SAT I or 30 on the ACT; and be classified as a beginning freshman.
  3. MARY BUSH SMITHER PRESIDENT'S ENDOWMENT: $1000 per semester.  Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in any discipline; be in the upper 10 percent of their high school graduating class and score not less than 1340 (critical reading and math) on the SAT I or 30 on the ACT; and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.00.   For additional information contact: Paula Turner, SHSU Box 2120, email: scholarship@shsu.edu
  4. PAULINE BUTLER AKER PRESIDENT'S ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree. Recipients may major in any discipline, but must: be in the upper 10 percent of their high school class; score not less than 1340 (critical reading +math) on the SAT I or 30 on the ACT; and be classified as a beginning freshman.
  5. BOBBY KEES & COLLEEN ANN MARKS PRESIDENTIAL ENDOWMENT FUND: $1000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree. The recipient must be an incoming freshman majoring in any discipline, but must: graduate in the upper ten percent of his/her high school graduating class; have an ACT score of not less than 30 or an SAT score of not less than 1340 (critical reading + math); maintain an overall GPA of 3.25; and be enrolled full-time and in good standing at Sam Houston State University. 
ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:
 
  1. UNIVERSITY SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIPS: $500 per semester for two semesters. Awarded to beginning freshmen. Recipients must be in the upper 20 percent of their high school graduating class and score not less than 1200 (critical reading + math) on the SAT I or 27 on the ACT.

    The criteria for the following scholarships are the same as those for University Scholars Scholarships. Applicants who are not selected for a University Scholars Scholarship will also be considered for the scholarships listed below:
     

  3. BELLE CLAYTON ATKEISSON SCHOLARSHIP: $125 per semester, two consecutive semesters of the freshman year.
  4. DELLA MCKENZIE BLACKMON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $100 per semester, two consecutive semesters of the freshman year.
  5. MINNIE JANE THREADGILL HEINS SCHOLARSHIP: $250 per semester, two consecutive semesters of the freshman year.
  6. TOMLINSON-LEDBETTER SCHOLARSHIP: $300 per semester, eight consecutive semesters beginning with the freshman year.

OTHER SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
 
  1. BAPTIST WOMEN'S CECIL M. & DOROTHY ANN DIXON JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount to be determined by the selection committee. Recipient must be a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Huntsville,TX; have applied for admission and been accepted, or be enrolled as a full-time student at SHSU, majoring in any discipline; maintain an overall GPA of 2.5. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor in the selection process.
  2. ROBYN LEIGH BARRUM MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters of the freshman year. Recipients must: be a graduate of Huntsville High School who has applied for admission and been accepted as a full-time student at SHSU, majoring in any discipline; maintain not less than a 2.0 GPA; and demonstrate financial need.
  3. SCOTT A. BICKEL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 for one semester. Recipients must: be full/part-time students enrolled at SHSU; major in any discipline; and work as a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. May 1st application deadline date.
  4. ERNESTINE LeTARDE CARROLL & OUIDA CARROLL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters following date of award. Recipients must: be enrolled at SHSU; major in english, history, speech, political science, sociology, or theatre and dance; and maintain not less than an overall 3.0 GPA.
  5. JUDGE & MRS. JAMES A ELKINS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree. The recipient must be an incoming freshman majoring in any discipline, but must; graduate in the upper ten percent of his/her high school graduating class; have an ACT score of not less than 30 or an SAT score of not less than 1340 (critical reading + math); and be enrolled full-time and maintain an overall GPA of 3.25.
  6. JOHN A. ELMORE, JR., JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP: $250 per semester for two semesters. Recipient must: be a sophomore, junior, or senior; major in mass communications with an emphasis on journalism; and maintain not less than a 3.0 GPA.
  7. FANNIE ROBINSON TYSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $250.00 per semester for the next two semesters. Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student in good standing enrolled at SHSU, demonstrate financial need, have achieved an overall high school GPA of 3.0, maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 at SHSU and have graduated from Coldspring-Oakhurst High School in San Jacinto County, Texas.
  8. FITZ FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for the next two semesters following the date of the award. SHSU recipients must have not less than a 3.0 GPA. High school applicants must meet the same requirements as those for University Scholars; all applicants must demonstrate financial need.
  9. HUNTSVILLE LION'S CLUB ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded to a Huntsville High School senior who has been accepted and plans to attend SHSU, majoring in any discipline.
  10. CHARLES W. JONES, JR. COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP: $500 award to a student enrolled in good standing at SHSU, majoring in any discipline. Recipients must: demonstrate involvement in community service; demonstrate financial need; and maintain not less than an overall 2.5 GPA.
  11. JESSE H. JONES & MARY GIBBS JONES SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters following the award. Recipients must be sophomores, junior or seniors, majoring in liberal arts (economics, English, foreign language, geography, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, and speech communications) or graphic arts (art, studio art, animation art, multimedia, and photography) and maintain not less than a 3.0 GPA.
  12. HARMON LOWMAN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters of the freshman year. Recipients must be in the upper 20 percent of their graduating class and score not less than 1200 (critical reading + math) on the SAT I or 27 on the ACT.
  13. ARTHUR BEVERLY AND MARY ALICE MAYS ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester, two semesters. Awarded to students who have attended SHSU for two consecutive academic years with an overall GPA of not less than 3.0 and be classified as a juniors or seniors.
  14. JESSE NEWELL & THOMAS SEARS MONTGOMERY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of award is determined by accrued interest. Recipient must: demonstrate financial need; meet normal SHSU entrance requirement; and be enrolled as full-time student at SHSU; and maintain an overall GPA of not less than 2.5.
  15. DAN RATHER/HORATIO ALGER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of award is determined by accrued interest. Recipient must: be enrolled and in good standing at SHSU; major in any discipline; maintain an overall GPA of 3.0; submit an essay describing how student has overcome adversity; submit three letters of recommendation; and demonstrate financial need.
  16. JOHN W. SPONBERG JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP: $250 per semester for two semesters. Recipients must: be a sophomore; major in mass communications with an emphasis on journalism; and maintain not less than a 3.0 GPA.
  17. M.C. SUTTON SCHOLARSHIP: $500 award for the fall semester following date of award. Recipient must; be physically challenged; be a full-time student at SHSU; work toward a degree in any discipline; have completed at least 30 semester credit hours; and maintain not less than an overall GPA of 2.5.
  18. STATE FARM FRIENDS OF SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of award is determined by accrued interest. Recipients must: be a full-time SHSU student in any classification; maintain an overall GPA of not less than 2.0; demonstrate financial aid; and submit a statement describing financial need.
  19. TEXAS PIONEER FOUNDATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year; Recipient must be a full or part-time (minimum of 6 hours per long semester) student majoring in any discipline and demonstrate financial aid; maintain an overall GPA of 2.00.
  20. CLAUDE H. & ALICE M. TOWNSEND FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP: $625 per semester for two semesters to a beginning freshman. Recipients must: have been in the upper 20 percent of their high school graduating class; score not less than 1200 (critical reading + math) on the SAT I or 27 on the ACT; and demonstrate financial need. Scholarship may be renewed annually for three additional years, based upon availability of funds and not less than a 3.0 GPA at SHSU.
  21. BRUCE/HILLEGEIST ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per semester for two semesters. The recipients may be selected from the incoming freshmen, SHSU or transfer students. The recipients must be full-time, major in any discipline, and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 while attending Sam Houston State University.
  22. DR. RUTH M. CADY & DR. DOROTHY A. HUSKEY HEALTH SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 per year. Recipients must be full-time junior or senior students. One scholarship award is for a student majoring in health education, and the other scholarship award is for a student pursuing a pre-professional health related major. Both must show a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Financial need is a consideration but not a determining factor in the awarding of this scholarship.
  23. McDONALD'S/DAN LEASURE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The amount of the scholarship varies per semester. Recipients must be a full time sophomore, junior or senior. Recipients with the following majors will be selected on a rotating schedule: dance, basketball and accounting. Selection preference will be given to a McDonald's employee, who is a full time SHSU sophomore, junior, or senior maintaining not less than an overall 3.0 GPA.
  24. JAMES W. WALSTEAD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $2500 per semester. Scholarship was established in memory of the donor's son, an SHSU graduate. Scholarship is to be awarded to a freshman student who has been a resident of the state of Texas for at least one year. This is a four-year award, continuation dependent upon maintaining a GPA of 3.25. The recipient must have a record of extracurricular activities and leadership (sports not to be overweighed when compared to other activities). The student must demonstrate financial need.
  25. THE GRADUATE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP: A competitive scholarship awarded to graduate students whose academic accomplishments and university or community citizenship are excellent in every respect. This competitive scholarship is intended for a full time student enrolled as a resident, nonresident or a citizen of a country other than the United States of America, maintaining not less than a 3.50 GPA. The award amount is determined on the availability of funds - for summer semester only.
  26. THE UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Is a competitive scholarship awarded to entering freshmen, Sam Houston State University undergraduate and transfer students whose academic accomplishments and university or community citizenship are excellent in every respect. This competitive scholarship is intended for a full time student enrolled as a resident, nonresidents or a citizen of a country other than the United States of America, maintaining not less than a 3.25 GPA. The award amount is determined on the availability of funds.
  27. HUNTSVILLE STUDY CLUB: Scholarship amount will be determined annually according to endowment earnings. This scholarship will be awarded for two semesters of the freshman year to a female graduating senior from Huntsville High School majoring in any discipline. The recipient is required to be a full-time SHSU student maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Applicants will need to submit a 250 word statement of life goals.
  28. HERRINGTON VETERANS SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year. Scholarship awarded to a married undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University. Student must be a US Army veteran who has served in a foreign conflict at least 6 months and has an honorable discharge. Financial need is a consideration in the selection of a recipient, but not a determining factor. GPA of at least 2.8 is required.
  29. MILDRED REED HANCOCK ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per year. Scholarship is available to full-time sophomore, junior or senior majoring in any discipline at SHSU. This scholarship was established to benefit persons who started college, but left to raise a family. Recipient must demonstrate financial need and have a GPA of at least 2.5.
  30. JUANITA BROWN THREADGILL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1,500 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, have taken time between high school and starting college (minimum of six months) or be returning to college (after a minimum of six months out of college) to finish a degree or to get another degree.  Preference will be given to single parents.  Recipients will continue to receive this award for a second year as long as they are students at SHSU and continue to meet the selection criteria.  They must submit a one page essay on their future plans and how the scholarship has affected them.  Recipients may receive the scholarship for a third year if they write an essay demonstrating that they are under particular hardship and deserve to receive the scholarship another year.  GPA of 2.8 is required. 
  31. JIM STEVENS COMPUTER SERVICES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:$1,000 per year. Recipient must be a part or full-time undergraduate, graduate or doctoral student, majoring in any discipline and be employed by Computer Services Department for at least the last six months.  Financial need is a consideration.   GPA requirement is 2.80.  Application submission deadline is Feb. 15.
  32. GREATER TEXAS FOUNDATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year. Recipient must be; an entering freshman student in good standing enrolled at SHSU majoring in any discipline; demonstrate financial need; and must maintain an overall GPA of 2.8.
  33. ANNA PENNYBACKER MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT: Recipient must be: a full-time student junior or senior majoring in any discipline; demonstrate that they have had several months of travel and/or have studied at a recognized center of art or culture; and maintain an overall 2.5 GPA.
  34. H.H. "TUBBY" AND NUNA SANDEL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $2000 per semester. The recipient must: have graduated from a Walker County high school; be a full-time incoming freshman student enrolled at SHSU; majoring in any discipline; demonstrate financial need; have a minimum SAT score of 1050 or a minimum ACT score of 23. The recipient must maintain at least an overall 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to students majoring in math or science, but is not limited to those majors.
  35. VIVIAN REID MEHR SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled at SHSU and majoring in any discipline; entering or returning to college after raising a family or planning a second career. 3.0 GPA requirement. Application deadline is March 1.
  36. AMATO BROTHERS SCHOLARSHIP: $3,000 per year; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, majoring in any discipline, demonstrate financial need, and exhibit commitment to continue and complete their education. The recipient must maintain not less than a 2.5 GPA in major and overall.
  37. WILFRED AND BOBBIE DIETRICH ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per year; Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student majoring in English, speech or drama, and demonstrate financial need. GPA requirement 3.0.
  38. RAVEN/KAPPA ALPHA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The amount of the scholarship varies per semester. Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students (minimum of 12 hours, first time or repeat hours), active member of Gamma Tau chapter of Kappa Alpha Order, in good standing with the university, the fraternity and the National Office of Kappa Alpha Order and of good character to reflect positively on the Chapter. GPA requirement is 3.0 in previous long semester.
  39. PHYSICAL PLANT FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in any discipline and be a natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a currently employed SHSU Physical Plant staff member. GPA requirement 2.50. Application deadline is February 15.

PHI BETA SIGMA FRATRNITY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, of minority descent, provide evidence of a minimum of 20 hours of community service within the last year, provide three letters of recommendation from teachers or community leaders, and provide a one-page letter expressing goals and aspirations.  No GPA requirement.
  41. DAN RATHER AND JEAN RATHER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $3,000 per year.  Recipients must be incoming undergraduate, first-time freshman students majoring in any discipline, demonstrate financial need, have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
  42. CLAY AND MARGARET B. SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior majoring in any discipline and demonstrate financial need.  GPA requirement is 2.8.
  43. GLENDA DAWSON EDUCATIONAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, majoring in any discipline.  Financial need is a consideration. 
  44. POLLARD FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 per year.  Recipient must be either full-time or part-time graduate or doctoral student majoring in any discipline within the Colleges of Education, Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, or Humanities & Social Sciences, demonstrate financial need, and present documentation of his or her exceptional teaching ability by having received an award for teaching.  Although it is not a requirement, it is the express desire that the recipient intends to return to teaching in a public or private school after obtaining his or her advanced degree.  GPA of 3.0 is required.
  45. ARLEIGH B. TEMPLETON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipients must be full or part-time undergraduate or graduate students majoring in any discipline within the College of Education.  Job Corps graduates have priority.  GPA of 3.50 is required. 
  46. RUTH AND J.A. CHANDLER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipients must be full-time junior or senior students in good standing and of good character enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in agriculture or elementary education or family and consumer science with the intent to receive teacher certification.  GPA of 2.50 is required.
  47. HOUSTON AND ROBBIE McCARLEY COMMUNITY SERVICE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU, majoring in any discipline, have a minimum of 20 hours of documented community service within the last year and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.00 is required.
  48. INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL EXCHANGE ACCOUNTING SCHOLARSHIP:$1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU, majoring in accounting, have transferred from a community college in the North Harris Montgomery Community College District and have been previously or currently be affiliated with the International Cultural Exchange.  A GPA of 3.0 is required. 
  49. ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT GENERATIONS SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student, in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, be a (a) natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a currently employed staff member from the University's Enrollment Management Division; or (b) natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a retired staff member of the University's Enrollment Management Division, with a retirement date on or after December 31, 2007; demonstrate financial need by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and be employed full-time or part-time, and/or involved in community service, and be active in an on-campus organization.  GPA requirement is 2.50.
  50. SWEET CARPENTER PRESIDENTIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per semester.  Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in any discipline and be a graduate of a high school in Trinity Texas.  If, in any one year, there are no qualified applicants from a high school in Trinity Texas, the scholarship may be awarded to a qualified incoming freshman student from any high school in East Texas.  Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor.  This is a four-year award as long as the recipient continues to meet all of the selection criteria.  GPA of 3.00 is required.
  51. DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Sam Houston State University competes at the NCAA Division I level (I-AA in football) in 15 varsity sports. The Bearkats are members of the Southland Conference and have a tradition of excellence that includes national championships in baseball, golf and softball and NCAA playoff appearances in football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, golf and track and field. The intercollegiate sports in which SHSU fields teams are football, volleyball, men's/women's cross country, men's/women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's/women's golf, women's tennis, and men's/women's indoor/outdoor track and field. Athletic scholarships are offered in all sports.

  3. LIBBY BRITT-PHILO/ZETA TAU ALPHA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $200 annually. Must be a junior or senior member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and living in the ZTA sorority house. Must demonstrate financial need.

HONORS PROGRAM

  1. ELLIOTT T. BOWERS SCHOLARSHIP: Available up to four years totaling up to $2800. Any student who has been accepted to the Elliott T. Bowers Honors Program and is currently in good standing within the program is eligible to apply.
  2. AUGUSTA LAWRENCE SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters. Any member of the Elliott T. Bowers Honors Program in good standing who will be a junior or senior is eligible to apply.

  MILITARY SCIENCE (ROTC)


  1. ARMY RESERVE OFFICER'S TRAINING CORPS (ROTC) SCHOLARSHIPS: Army ROTC scholarships are merit-based and awarded on competitive basis. These scholarships cover all tuition and fees. In addition, each winner receives a flat rate of $450 annually for books. A student will also receive a subsistence allowance of up to $2000 each school year the scholarship is in effect. The period for requesting an application form for a four-year Army ROTC scholarship is from March 1 of a high school student's junior year through November 1 of a student's senior year. If the completed application is post-marked by July 15, the applicant will be considered for an early scholarship. Winners are announced about November 1.
  2. Eligibility requirements are:

    A. U.S. citizen
    B. Age 17 before the scholarship is effective.
    C. Taken the SAT or ACT no later than November of the year of application, have a minimum 850 SAT or composite 19 ACT.
    D. Good high school grades.
    E. Participate in leadership, extracurricular, and athletic activities (part-time jobs earn substitute credit).
    F. Under age 27 on June 30 of the expected graduation year (*Qualifying veterans may be granted an extension of up to four years).
    G. High school graduate or have equivalent credit.
    H. Agree to accept a commission in the U.S. Army.
    I. Agree to pursue Army approved academic major.
    J. Meet required physical standards.

  3. SCHUDER'S RANGER COMPANY SCHOLARSHIP: This $20,300 scholarship was created by Raymond Schuder and his wife, Vernon, for needy and deserving students participating in the Ranger Company while attending Sam Houston State University. To be considered as a recipient applicants must satisfy the following criteria: APPLICATION DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 15 & MARCH 30.

    C. Maintain good scholarship and excellence, while representing SHSU through participation in the Ranger Company.
     

  5. THE COLONEL JOHN W. THOMASON JR., USMC, MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This $10,000 endowed scholarship was created by the sisters of Colonel Thomason: Mrs. Sue T. Noordberg, Mrs. Emily T. Petersen, and Mrs. Margaret T. Cole. The scholarship includes a saber awarded to the future Bearkat Battalion Commander for the Fall semester. To be considered as a recipient applicants must satisfy the following criteria: 1) Enrolled as a contracted Military Science III Cadet in the necessary to assume command of the BearKat Battalion, and 3) Maintain good scholarship and excellence while representing SHSU through the Army ROTC Program.
  6. TWO OR THREE YEAR RESERVE FORCES DUTY SCHOLARSHIP: Eligibility requirements are the same as the four year scholarship except that applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (at application time and time of receivership). Three year applicants must have a qualifying SAT/ACT score, two year applicants do not require a SAT/ACT score. APPLICATION DEADLINE: CONTACT U.S. ARMY RECRUITER.
  7. JAMES DENNIS BAZAN MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT:  A Military Science student must be enrolled in the Bearkat Battalion the following fall and spring and in good standing at SHSU. Student must maintain an overall 2.25 GPA and demonstrate financial need.
  8. COPELAND MILITARY SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: Well provide two $250 annual awards each year. Recipient must be minoring in Military Science. 2.5 GPA required. APPLICATION DEADLINE: APRIL 15.
  9. COLONEL WILLIAM JACKSON BYTHE, SR ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and a member of the ROTC program, demonstrate financial need, have achieved an overall high school GPA of 3.0 and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 at SHSU. APPLICATION DEADLINE: JULY 31ST.
  10. COLONEL JOHN A. AND GEANIE L. MCMANNERS ROTC SCHOLARSHIP; recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior student, majoring in any discipline, and a member of the ROTC program. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor; $1,000/year and must maintain a grade point average or 2.50 or better; deadline is 1 February.
  11. MARCUS LUTTRELL MILITARY SCHENCE SCHOLARSHIP FUND: Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in any discipline; be a member of the ROTC program at SHSU; be contracted to become a commissioned officer; and demonstrate leadership.  Recipient must read "Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10" and write a one-page essay.  GPA of 2.80 is required.  Application deadline is February.  For additional information, contact Jamilyn White, mls-jxb@shsu.edu, 936-294-1306.
  12. **An extension of up to four years may be granted for previous active duty service. The length of extension cannot exceed the period of service, e.g., with 2 years active service the applicant must be under 27 years on June 30 of the calendar year eligible for commissioning. The maximum extension is four years which means the applicant must be under 29 years on June 30 of the calendar year of appointment as a commissioned officer.

Remember, there is no obligation to the U.S. Army to apply for a scholarship, only to accept one.

  3. SAN ANTONIO LIVESTOCK EXPOSITION SCHOLARSHIP: $10,000/4 years, awards to incoming freshman only, two awards given annually, major in a field of agriculture, 12 credit hours per semester minimum, 3.0 GPA, Texas residents only. Must comply with S.A.L.E. requirements.
  4. JAMES MARCUS SMITH ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $500-1000/year, 2.75 GPA, Animal Husbandry/Animal Science majors, selection based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  5. WILSON-WARNER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000-3000/year, 3.5 GPA, major in field of agriculture, other selection criteria based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  6. WILLIE FRANK HALL TRUST SCHOLARSHIP: $1000-1500/year, two awards (may vary), 2.75 GPA, graduated in upper half of high school class, major in agricultural sciences seeking teacher certification, other selection criteria same as previous scholarship.
  7. LOWRY SCHOLARSHIP: $300/year (approximately), two semesters completed at SHSU, active in Collegiate FFA, good character and scholarship, other criteria same as previous scholarship.
  8. SEITZ GIFT FRUIT/GOLDEN VALLEY FARMS SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, two awards, 2.5 GPA, major in agricultural sciences seeking teacher certification, one awarded to senior prior to student teaching, the other awarded to a senior within the student teaching block.
  9. LETTS-HOPPER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, one award, junior or senior, major in agricultural sciences, selected on the basis of character, academic achievement and financial need.

DEPARTMENT OF ART
 

  1. ART ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: The Art Endowment Scholarship is awarded annually each spring semester. Students are nominated by faculty members and are then required to submit a portfolio for review by the faculty. Recipients are then selected based on grade point averages overall and in art and on artistic ability. Recipients of this award are also required to have a show exhibited their work during the first summer school semester in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery.
  2. MARION ST. JOHN BAKER SCHOLARSHIP: The Marion St. John [pronounced “sinn jinn”] Baker Scholarship was established in 1990 by Paul Culp and Joan Bowler Culp in honor of their friendship with Mrs. Baker and to perpetuate her memory. Mrs. Baker lived in Sydney, Australia and was active in artistic circles. She championed often-controversial political causes, e.g. nuclear bans, Aboriginal rights, and government aid to the arts. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and students may submit three-dimensional works of sculpture, jewelry or ceramics to be juried. Recipient must be a good general student with a 3.0 grade point average overall, must show outstanding abilities in one of the three-dimensional art forms such as ceramics, jewelry or sculpture and have at least one full year of studies left to complete at Sam Houston State University.   3. MARJORIE LEVERTON BOEHME SCHOLARSHIP FOR ART STUDENTS: The Marjorie Leverton Boehme Scholarship for Art Students was established in 1999 by Marjorie Leverton Boehme to provide financial assistance Art students. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient of this scholarship. The recipient of this award must be a full time student at Sam Houston State University of Junior or Senior status majoring in Art.
  4. ELKINS LAKE KUNTZ-NELSON MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Elkins Lake Kuntz-Nelson Memorial Art Scholarship Endowment was established in 1988 by the board of Elkins Lake Art League to enable young artists to pursue and encourage excellence in painting. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and paintings submitted for this scholarship may be of any medium. The recipient must maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall and a 3.0 in Art and have at least one full year of studies left to complete at Sam Houston State University. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  5. HAL FULGHAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: The Hal Fulgham Memorial Scholarship was established in 1990 in the memory of Hal Fulgham. Recipients of this award must be an entering freshman student at Sam Houston State University majoring in Photography and submit work for review to the Art Department. Recipients must also have been a Texas resident for at least five years. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art Office.
  6. EDWARD GEESLIN ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Edward Geeslin Art Endowment was established in 1971 by retired professor Edward Davis Geeslin to encourage deserving young men and women of good character who have demonstrated their potential successful achievement as students and are in need of financial assistance. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient.
  7. WELDON HALL JR. SCHOLARSHIP: The Weldon Hall Jr. Endowment in Art was established in 2004 in honor of Weldon Hall Jr. Recipients of this award must be an entering freshman student at Sam Houston State University majoring in Art and submit artwork to the art department for review by the faculty. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  8. RUTH WYNNE THOMASON HOLLINSHEAD ENDOWMENT FUND IN ART: The Ruth Wynne Thomason Hollinshead Endowment Fund in Art was established in 2002 in memory of Ruth Wynne Thomason Hollinshead. The recipient of this scholarship must be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in any discipline within the Art Department, demonstrate financial need, and maintain a 3.0 grade point average overall. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient.
  9. EMMETTE JACKSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The Emmette Jackson Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 in honor of Emmette Jackson to provide financial assistance to worthy photography majors. This scholarship is awarded annually each Spring and a committee of photography faculty shall select the recipient of the scholarship. Recipients must be enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in Photography, maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall, and be classified as a junior or senior.
  10. JESSE H. JONES AND MARY GIBBS JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The Jesse H. Jones and Mary Gibbs Jones Endowed Scholarships are awarded to outstanding full-time resident Liberal Arts or Graphic Arts majors who have maintained a 3.0 grade point average at Sam Houston State University. Jesse H. Jones and Mary Gibbs Jones Endowed Scholars will receive $500 per semester for the fall and spring semester following the award.   11. STANLEY E. LEA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The Stanley E. Lea Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 by retired professor Stanley E. Lea who wished to provide financial assistance to art students studying printmaking. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring. Students may submit 1-5 prints (excluding photos and computer graphics) to be juried for this scholarship. The recipient of this scholarship must be an Art major, of sophomore, junior or senior status, maintain a 3.0 grade point average in Art and exhibit exceptional creative talent and creative ability. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  12. CLEM OTIS MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Clem Otis Memorial Art Scholarship Endowment was established by the Otis family in 1983 in honor of Mrs. Clem Otis. She was an accomplished landscape artist who touched the memories of people across the country with her oils and acrylics. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and paintings submitted for this scholarship must be done in oil. The recipient of this scholarship must have a 2.5 grade point average at Sam Houston State University.
  13. CHARLES PEBWORTH SCULPTURE SCHOLARSHIP: The Charles Pebworth Sculpture Endowment was established in 1993 in honor of Charles Pebworth’s 36 years of dedicated service, to enable young students to pursue their studies in sculpture. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty will provide nominations or students may nominate themselves by submitting a portfolio of sculptural works. The recipient of this scholarship must have a 3.0 grade point average in Art, exhibit outstanding abilities in sculpture and must have one full year of studies left to complete at Sam Houston State University. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  14. POLLEY ART AWARDS: The Polley Art Award was established in 1970 by retired professor Joseph Polley Paine to encourage excellence in painting. Mr. Paine placed money from the sale of his paintings into this award fund during the last years of his teaching career and dedicated it to the memory of the Polley family and its Texas pioneer heritage. This scholarship is awarded annually during the spring semester, based on work that was completed during the immediately preceding fall semester painting class. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  15. JAMES B. AND MARILYN C. SHEPARD SCHOLARSHIP: The James B. and Marilyn C. Shepard Endowment Fund was established in 1999. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient. The recipient must be a native born US citizen, be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in Art and maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall. First preference will be for students studying sculpture.
  16. STUDENT ART ASSOCIATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU and majoring in any discipline within the Department of Art, and be an active member of the Student Art Association.  An overall GPA of 2.75 is required.  A GPA of 3.25 is required in their major.  Application deadline is the Spring semester.  For additional information, contact the Art Department, (936)294-4311, SHSU Box 2089  Huntsville, TX 77341
  17. MADISON AND MARTHA WOLFE PHOTOGRAPHY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  Amount per year varies.   18. KENNETH ZONKER ENDOWMENT: The Kenneth Zonker Endowment Fund was established in 2003 by the Zonker family in honor of Kenneth Zonker. This scholarship is awarded annually and a committee within the Art Department selects the recipient. The recipient must be a full time student at Sam Houston State University majoring in Art, submit one piece of art work (in any medium) that was not used for a class project or grade, and was created without supervision, and maintain a 3.0 grade point average in Art.   19. ROBERT A. AND CAROLYN W. DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (BIOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE)
 

At present, all scholarships offered by the Department of Biological Sciences have the following common criteria:

  1. BIOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester, two consecutive semesters, four to six awards, sophomore, junior, or senior status, 3.0 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  2. BIOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester, two consecutive semesters, two to four awards for beginning freshmen in upper 25 percent of high school graduating class, minimum score of 1000 on SAT or 24 on ACT; must maintain 3.0 GPA at SHSU, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  3. CLAUDE MCLEOD ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500-$750 per semester, two consecutive semesters, junior or senior status, 3.0 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  4. EMMA NORMAND ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500-$750 per semester, two consecutive semesters, junior or senior status, 3.0 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  5. JAMES D. LONG BIOLOGY ENDOWMENT: Endowment is established to provide student academic scholarships and support for student research projects in the Dept of Biological Sciences. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to receive assistance from this endowment, as are entering freshmen. Applicants for Long Student Research Awards must submit a written proposal in the format specified by the selection committee and approved by a supervising faculty member indicating how the award will be used. Amount unspecified, 3.0 GPA required.
  6. PATRICK NEIL O'BRYANT ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. Recipient must be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in Environmental Science, or in the event there is no qualified Environmental Science major, the recipient may major in Biological Science with an interest in Environmental Science; demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.50 is required.
  7. JAMES PATRICK WEBER ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AWARD: $200 fall semester only, 3.0 GPA, sophomore, junior, or senior Environmental Science major.
  8. S.R. WARNER ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP: $500-$750 per semester, two consecutive semesters, junior or senior status, 3.0 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining B average.
  9. TURNER BIOLOGY/ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: $600 per year; Recipient must be a full-time student accepted or enrolled at Sam Houston State University and have transferred from a community college or is an international student. Recipient must have maintained an overall GPA of 3.0 over the previous two consecutive semesters and continue to maintain an overall 3.0 GPA. Financial need is a consideration but not a determining factor in the selection process.
  10. WILSON-WARNER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN THE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES: $1000-1500 per semester two consecutive semesters, one or two awards, sophomore, junior, or senior status, 3.5 GPA, spring semester contingent upon maintaining a B average.
  11. EVERETT WILSON BIOLOGY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate, graduate or transfer student from a community college, or an international student, majoring in biology or pre-professional studies, and demonstrate financial need.  Preference will be given to a qualifying international student.  Two letters of recommendation from professors who are well-acquainted with the applicant must accompany the scholarship application.  3.0 GPA required.  Application deadline is February 1.
  12. EMMA NORMAND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student, in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in biological sciences, and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.5 is required.
  13. DR. HAROLD F.   8. RAY E. HUMPHREY SCHOLARSHIP: $500-1000 per year. Undergraduate Chemistry major currently enrolled in SHSU, 3.0 GPA, U.S. citizen.
  9. ROBERT A. WELCH FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIPS: Chemistry major or Chemistry minor, enrolled in CHM 495 and participating in an undergraduate research program.

Applicants must provide evidence of involvement in community service, have a clear criminal record and demonstrate personal integrity. Financial need is not a determining factor in selecting the recipient, but a student demonstrating financial need may receive priority in the selection process. 3.0 GPA requirement. * Students need not apply for CS scholarships. Each spring all officially registered CS majors are automatically considered for scholarships. Recipients are normally selected during the Spring semester with the actual award presented the following fall or fall/spring.

  1. ALVIS AUTREY VOICE AWARD: $300. per year, $150. per semester, Music major, outstanding vocal music student, completed at least four semesters of study, anticipates at least one more year in residence, chosen by the Department of Music Voice Facility only.
  2. BETTY FRIZZELL MUSIC AWARD: $150. per year, $75. per semester, Music major, 3.0 minimum overall GPA; sophomore, junior, or senior, based on character, scholarship, leadership, service, and need.
  3. CHARLES AND HELEN LINDSAY ENDOWMENT FUND IN MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in an academic program in the School of Music with a preference given to students pursuing a degree in Choral Music Education.  2.85 GPA requirement.  Deadline for application submission is 4/15/07.  Email  address for information is bankhead@shsu.edu
  4. C.R. HACKNEY AWARD FOR MUSIC EDUCATION: $200. per year, $100. per semester, Music education major, completing at least one year in residence, outstanding potential as a music educator, anticipating one more year in residence.
  5. DAVID BERNSHAUSEN MUSIC ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies; Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students majoring in an academic program in the School of Music, be an excellent instrumentalist or vocalist, demonstrate financial need, and be from the city of Yoakum or Lavaca county or Wharton county. This is a four-year award as long as the recipient continues to meet the criteria. 2.0 GPA requirement.
  6. ELAINE McDONALD MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP: $300 per year. Scholarship established for students majoring in music and/or currently performing in a major ensemble in the School of Music (choir, band, orchestra, or accompanying). Recipient must have achieved sophomore or higher standing and have been enrolled full time at SHSU for one year prior to the semester of the scholarship audition and be enrolled full time during the semester of the audition. Members of Sigma Alpha lota are eligible to audition for the scholarship. GPA requirement is 2.85. Deadline for application submission is February of each year.
  7. INEZ MEACHUM POWELL AWARDS IN MUSIC: $250. per year, two students selected, Music major, outstanding academic attainment, character of unquestioned merit, anticipating one more year in residence. Not for incoming Freshmen.

  5. WESLEY L. OAKES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies; Recipients must be "well-rounded", full-time students majoring in any discipline in the College of Business Administration; be a junior or senior, having completed at least 60 hours of coursework prior to the semester that the scholarship is received; and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students from Limestone, Freestone or Leon Counties. If no students from these counties qualify for the scholarship, a student from central Texas may be considered. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in Management with an Operations Management emphasis, and demonstrate financial need.  The scholarship is automatically renewable for up to three years as long as the recipient continues to meet the selection criteria.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is January 31st. 
  2. ROBERT A. BARRAGAN ETHICS IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time student majoring in Management, demonstrate financial need, and answer two short essay questions.  Contact Department of Management and Marketing for the questions.  GPA requirement of 3.0 overall and in management. 
  3. DR. PAUL R. AND EMILY J. COLLEGE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE

The following scholarships are available to criminal justice majors and awarded each year at the College of Criminal Justice Honors Convocation for the following academic year.

  1. ALPHA PHI SIGMA SCHOLARSHIP . The Alpha Phi Sigma-Phi Chapter Scholarship is awarded to a male or female member of the criminal justice organization who has completed 43 hours, of which 12 are in criminal justice, is enrolled in 12 semester hours, and has an overall grade point average of 3.0 with a 3.2 grade point average in criminal justice.
  2. BRANDON ASHLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Brandon Ashley Memorial Scholarship is available to a Senior majoring in criminal justice who plans to pursue a career in law enforcement. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  3. GEORGE J. BETO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP . The George J. Beto Memorial Scholarship is available to an international student or a member of a minority group (including women), who has demonstrated financial need and has satisfactorily met the standard entrance requirements established by the University. The student must be enrolled as a full-time criminal justice student at Sam Houston State University . Preference is given to especially needy students from lower-income families. Special consideration will be given to "first generation" college students. Preference will be given to undergraduate students, although graduate students will not be precluded. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  4. JAMES C. BOSWELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP . The James C. Boswell Scholarship may be granted for the fall and spring semesters to deserving undergraduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University who have demonstrated financial need and who are seeking to pursue a degree in law enforcement or affiliated criminal justice disciplines. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  5. JOHN R. BRANIFF SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of scholarship varies per year; Recipients must be an undergraduate student majoring in careers in the field of law enforcement. Preference will be give to those students who are residents of Austin, Brazos, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Liberty, Madison, Montgomery, Walker, Waller and Washington Counties. Students must maintain 3.0 GPA. Application Deadline: February 14th.
  6. TOM BROUSSARD, PH.D. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP . The Thomas Broussard Ph.D. Memorial Scholarship may be granted for the fall and spring semesters to academically deserving undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University . Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  7. SARAH JANINE CLEARY AND MICHAEL GRIFFIN CLEARY SCHOLARSHIP . The Sarah Janine Cleary and Michael Griffin Cleary Scholarship is available to an undergraduate student who is majoring in criminal justice, who has demonstrated financial need and has satisfactorily met the standard entrance requirements established by the university. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  8. DIANE COCHRAN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be an undergraduate or graduate student in good standing at SHSU entering an internship at a Criminal Justice agency, having completed two long semesters at SHSU. Applicants must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Coordinator of the Criminal Justice Internship Program and the College of Criminal Justice Student Development Committee.   11. JUSTIN DeSPAIN CRIMINAL JUSTICE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Criminal Justice. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor. Preference will be given to Lambda Alpha Epsilon members. GPA requirement 2.5.
  12. CLAY DYER CRIMINAL JUSTICE UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP: The Clay Dyer Criminal Justice Undergraduate Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to determined Pottsboro High School or Grayson County Community College students who desire to pursue higher education in criminal justice at Sam Houston State University . Recipient must have applied for and been admitted as an undergraduate criminal justice major of Sam Houston State University , and must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
  13. MICHELLE A. EDWARDS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Recipients must be a full-time junior or senior female students in the fall semester the award will be disbursed and majoring in victim students. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor. GPA requirement 3.0 overall and 3.25 in their major.
  14. O.B. ELLIS AND PHILIP GIBBS, M.D. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP . The Ellis-Gibbs Memorial Scholarship is available to female criminal justice majors between 21-45 of age who has attained a minimum of junior level undergraduate standing or are candidates for or working towards master's or doctoral degrees. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates with experience in the criminal justice profession. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  15. CHARLES M. FRIEL SCHOLARSHIP, VICTOR G. STRECHER SCHOLARSHIP, GEORGE G. AND GRACE KILLINGER SCHOLARSHIP, AND MARGARET FARNWORTH SCHOLARSHIP: These scholarships are granted for the fall and spring semesters to academically deserving undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University . Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  16. JARED GRANT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: The Jared Grant Memorial Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to an undergraduate student in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University and employed by the Criminal Justice Center . Students must maintain a grade point average of 2.5.
  17. KELLY HARRIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AND WAYLAND D. PILCHER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: These scholarships are granted for the fall and spring semesters to academically deserving undergraduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University . Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  18. LT. C.E. JORDAN, SR. SCHOLARSHIP: The Lt. C.E. Jordan, Sr. Scholarship may be granted for the fall and spring semesters only, to male or female criminal justice majors enrolled as an undergraduate at Sam Houston State University . Students receiving the scholarships must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average in his/her studies, and must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours at Sam Houston State University, unless employed full time as a peace officer, in which case he/she must be enrolled in at least 9 semester hours. Other requirements of the scholarship are that the recipient be: (1) a United States Citizen and permanent resident of Texas; (2) a son, daughter, or legal ward of any peace officer or individual employed in areas related to or affiliated with the criminal justice field; (3) under 25 years of age, unless employed full time as a police officer, in which case the age limit is waived.
  19. LTC MICHAEL A. LYTLE '77 ACADEMIC PRIZE IN FORENSIC SCIENCE: Recipient must be a deserving graduate student selected by a committee of forensic science and criminal justice faculty based on either academic achievement or thesis/dissertation quality; GPA requirement 3.5, Application deadline February 14th.
  20. MERLYN D. MOORE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be an entering freshman or a current full-time student enrolled at SHSU and majoring in Criminal Justice; demonstrate financial need; and demonstrate a strong academic background. Preference will be given to those students who are actively participating in any Criminal Justice organization. Application deadline Feb. 14.
  21. STEVE MOORE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: The Steve Moore Memorial Scholarship is available to a male or female criminal justice major, junior standing or above, who has completed at least one long semester at Sam Houston State University , is enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours, and has a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Both need and scholarship are considered.
  22. NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION: The National Society for the Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarship is available to a male or female criminal justice major. The recipient must be a sophomore, junior, or senior who has made a commitment to a criminal justice affiliated discipline. Recipients must meet the entrance requirements of the University and exhibit exceptional academic ability as certified by the scholarship committee. Recipients must possess high moral standards, and must have exemplified though high school and into college the qualities of maturity, community, leadership, and appreciation of the country. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  23. JUSTIN PERDUE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be an undergraduate student majoring in criminal justice at SHSU. GPA requirement 2.5. Application deadline Feb. 14.
  24. MICHAEL SCHULZE SCHOLARSHIP: The Michael Schulze Scholarship is available to a criminal justice major, junior standing or above, who has completed at least one long semester at Sam Houston State University , enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

MELISSA RENEE SINCLAIR CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP: The Melissa Renee Sinclair Criminal Justice Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to students majoring in criminal justice at Sam Houston State University , with at least 72-80 semester hours earned. Recipient must be able to demonstrate financial need for scholarship and maintain an overall grade point average of 2.5.
  26. JASON W. STACHEY CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in Criminal Justice and demonstrate financial need. Entering freshmen must meet the minimum SAT/ACT score for undergraduate admissions. GPA requirement is 3.0
  27. TARGET SCHOLARSHIP OF EXCELLENCE: The Target Scholarship of Excellence will be awarded to three (3) students. One award will be given to a freshman who will be classified as a sophomore for the following academic year; another award will be given to a sophomore who will be classified as a junior the following academic year; another award will be given to a junior who will be classified as a senior the following academic year. The recipient must (1) be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in Criminal Justice; and (2) maintain an overall GPA of 3.0. Applicants will also be asked to provide a written response to one question agreed upon by the scholarship selection committee and the Donor representatives.

The Law Enforcement Assistance Program (LEAP) is available to law enforcement officers majoring in criminal justice and employed by an agency in Austin , Chambers, Fort Bend , Galveston , Harris, Liberty , Montgomery , Waller or Walker County . These scholarships are available to both male and female law enforcement majors, junior standing or above, who have completed at least one long semester at Sam Houston State University, enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

LAMBDA ALPHA EPSILON SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time or part-time sophomore, junior or senior student in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, with Criminal Justice declared as their major or minor, be a member in good standing of Lambda Alpha Epsilon - Delta Chi Chapter for a minimum of one semester, and be serving as an officer or have served in the past as an officer of Lambda Alpha Epsilon.  GPA of 3.00 overall is required as well as a GPA of 3.20 in their Criminal Justice courses.  Application deadline is February 14th.
  39. SUSAN L. CANFIELD MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT FUND: Recipient must be a full or part-time (minimum of nine hours per semester) undergraduate or graduate student (minimum of six hours per semester) in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in Criminal Justice and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.00 is required.  Application deadline is February 14th.

  2. ARMY SPECIALIZED TRAINING PROGRAM UNIT 4814 ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full-time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and provides documentation of having earned part of their university expenses, has at least a 2.5 overall grade point average and is willing to perform 3 to 5 hours per week service in the Academic Enrichment Center.
  3. BRYAN BAKER INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full-time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, is seeking to become certified at the secondary level, demonstrates financial need and has at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
  4. KAREN GAIL CRAWFORD MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: This award of $1,650/semester (available for up to four semesters) is intended for a student who is seeking to become certified to teach in elementary schools and has been enrolled at SHSU for at least four semesters. The student must be admitted to the educator preparation program and maintain at least a 2.5 overall grade point average, with at least a 3.0 grade point average in the major. The student must demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to teaching at the elementary level. (A 500-word essay on why the student wants to teach young children is required.)
  5. DAVID CURLEE ENLOE SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 2.5 overall grade point average.
  6. M.B. AND EMMA ETHEREDGE SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a student who will be a freshman full-time undergraduate student, intends to become certified to teach, demonstrates financial need and brings a sound academic record from high school.
  7. ERMA KEEFER FARRIS ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and good character and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average. Preference will be given to students who are life-long residents of Walker County.
  8. TEMPLETON GRUY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN EDUCATION: This award of $1,000/semester is intended for a "non-tradition" female undergraduate student who is enrolled full time, admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 2.5 overall grade point average. (Requires a special one-to-two page essay describing the student's commitment to pursuing and obtaining teacher certification).
  9. ODELL WEATHERLY HALL EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 2.5 overall grade point average.
  10. HERITAGE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates through letters of reference outstanding character and affiliation with an organized Christian religion, and maintains at least a 2.5 overall grade point average.
  11. JAMES L. AND BILLIE J. HICKMAN ENDOWED EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, maintains at least a 3.0 grade point average and is involved in extra-curricular activities that broadens the recipients experiences and life skills.
  12. VALINE HOBBS ELEMENTARY EDUCATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be an undergraduate full-time student in good standing at Sam Houston State University and majoring in Elementary Education. GPA of 3.00 is required.
  13. SUSAN SCHEMBER HOLTKAMP ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student seeking elementary education certification who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
  14. RETIRED PROFESSORS OF EDUCATOR PREPARATION SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who is seeking to be certified to teach at the elementary level, has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
  15. MARY COLLINS SANDEL SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who is seeking to be certified to teach at the elementary level, has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
  16. ROBERT ERIC SCHULTZ MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: This award of $300/every 3rd year is intended for a full time undergraduate student of sophomore, junior or senior level who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.  This scholarship will be awarded next in the year 2008-2009.
  17. MRS. BLANCHE MILLER SHAW SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who is seeking elementary teacher certification and intends to teach first grade, admitted to the educator preparation programs, demonstrates through letters of reference high moral character and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
  18. MATTIE SNEED ELEMENTARY EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student seeking to become certified to teach at the elementary level who has been admitted to the educator preparation program and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
  19. SOUTHLAND SCHOLARS PROGRAM: This award of $1000/year is intended for a beginning freshman student who will be seeking to become a certified teacher. The student must have a 1200 SAT score and be in the top quarter of the high school graduating class. The student may continue to receive the scholarship for four years if the student maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
  20. TEXAS SOCIETY DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FOR TEACHER EDUCATION: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average. The student must demonstrate through letters of reference high moral standards and that the student exemplifies qualities of maturity, community leadership and appreciation of country.
  21. CARRIE HERREN TOMLINSON SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student of junior or senior level who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need, demonstrates through letters of reference good character and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average. Preference is given to math educators.
  22. NELL ROWENA TUCKER ENDOWMENT FUND: Amount varies; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing, majoring in elementary education, demonstrate financial need and maintain at least a 2.8 overall grade point average. Application deadline is December 15th. .
  23. SADYE GRACE WILSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
  24. GIBBS A. AND LELA M. WYNNE SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has completed at least 60 hours, admitted to the educator preparation program and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average. Through letters of reference the student must demonstrate leadership, good moral character, intellectual curiosity, enterprise and initiative.
  25. MILTON GARRETT YORK, JR. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
  26. JUANITA BROCK LIERMAN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount unspecified. Recipient must be full-time student at SHSU, in good standing and seeking certification in elementary education. Recipient must also have been admitted to the Educator Preparation Program.
  27. ROBERT AND BILLIE LAROE TURNER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount unspecified. Scholarship to provide assistance to a student accepted into the teacher education program. Student must be in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and demonstrate financial need. GPA requirement is 3.0.
  28. ELEANOR SMITH and CHARLES LEWIS GARRETT ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies; Recipients must be full-time junior, senior, or graduate students majoring in Education, preferably Elementary Education, and have one or more parent who is or was a teacher. 2.5 GPA requirement.
  29. KELLIE ANN (JENKINS) WHITLEY MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time junior or senior student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in elementary education, demonstrate financial need, and be a Texas resident.  GPS of 2.80 is required.
  30. GREATER TEXAS FOUNDATION MATH AND SCIENCE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and specializing in science or mathematics teaching; demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is February 15th.
  31. BILLY AND KATHY SMITH COLLEGE OF EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline within the College of Education; be a graduate of a high school in Madison, Leon, or Houston counties.  First preference shall be given to Madison County graduates.  GPS of 3.00 is required.
  32. MARY ANN AND LOUIS MACEY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate summer school student or a 5th year undergraduate athletic student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in any discipline within the College of Education; be a member of the SHSU football team; and comply with NCAA requirements.  GPA of 3.00 is required.
  33. DEBORAH DAILEY KINCAID MEMORIAL ELEMENTARY EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP: $2,500 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student in good standing, majoring in Elementary Education; have a minimum high school GPA of 2.8; and be a graduate of Huntsville High School.  If there are no qualified applicants from Huntsville High School, students from Grapeland High School, in Grapeland, Texas, shall be eligible for the scholarship award.  GPA of 2.80 is required.

  1. GENEVIEVE H. BROWN SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per year. Recipient must be in good standing at SHSU and majoring in the graduate counseling program and a member of Beta Kappa Tau Chapter of Chi Sigma lota. GPA requirement is 3.5.
  2. DR. EMILY DeFRANCE COUNSELING AND DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $400.00 per year. Recipient must be majoring in Counseling. Preference will be given to students with at least 5 graduate courses who express a commitment to enroll in play therapy course work. GPA requirements 3.75.   3. JAMES O. MATHIS SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has been accepted into the Graduate Counseling program at SHSU, has completed 30 semester credit hours in the graduate counseling program, who has shown potential for leadership, and is pursuing a licensure track.
  4. SHSU COUNSELING STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP: Scholarship for a student in good standing, enrolled at SHSU and majoring in Counseling. Recipient must be a candidate for a degree in Counseling. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor in the selection process. There will be one or more awards to equal the cost of one to three courses. GPA requirement is 3.5. Deadline for application submission is February 1 each year.
  5. W. TOM THWEATT, III MEMORAL GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP: $5,000 per year. Recipient must be a graduate student enrolled in at least one three-hour graduate class, majoring in counseling. Intended for a student who has been enrolled for at least two semesters at SHSU and is a senior undergraduate student, admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates leadership skills and community involvement, demonstrates commitment to culturally and linguistically diverse populations and to teaching in a bilingual education environment, maintains a membership in the Bilingual Education Student Organization and participates as an officer in the organization, demonstrates command of two languages and maintains at least a 2.8 grade point average.
6. KENNETH E. AND MERLE SCHEFFER ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Award to be determined annually. Intended for a full time undergraduate student who has been admitted to the educator preparation program, demonstrates financial need and maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.
7. JACK STAGGS KAPPA DELTA PI SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in elementary or secondary education and be a member of Kappa Delta Pi. GPA of 3.0 is required.
8. DR. LAVERNE WARNER EARLY CHILDHOOD ENDOWMENT: $500 for methods and student teaching senior year. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student; majoring in EC-4 Certification: Early Childhood Generalists and demonstrate financial need. COUNIHAN FAMILY EDUCATIONAL ENDOWMENT FUND: This endowment is being established in honor of members of the Counihan Family to provide financial assistance to selected students who have met the criteria listed.  A recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing and majoring in any program within the Department of Language, Literacy, and Special Populations or the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.  They must demonstrate financial need, maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and be of the Catholic faith.  One or more recipients will be chosen each year.  This award will be determined annually.

At present, all scholarships in English have two common criteria:

 A. Students must be English majors (or Journalism for Mary McAshan Gibbs Scholarship).

B. Students must apply in person (Evans 458) or be nominated by faculty member(s) of Sam Houston State University (usually members of English faculty but not exclusively so).

  1. DONALD L. STALLING GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN ENGLISH: Amount varies. Must be enrolled in Master of Arts in the English degree program. Must have an exceptional academic record. Must earn strong recommendation of scholarship committee made up of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Department/Division Chairman of English, Director Graduate Studies in English, and senior ranking tenured faculty member(s) of the English Department.
  2. DOROTHY B. RUSHING SCHOLARSHIP FOR TEACHER IN ENGLISH: Amount varies. Female English major in good standing in the secondary teacher certification program. Junior or senior status with at least six semester hours of lower division credit at SHSU. GPA must be 3.0 or better in all SHSU work; 3.5 in English. Has demonstrated exceptional potential as a future teacher of English.
  3. EDICE MILLER HINES SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies. English majors in the teacher certification program. Must have completed a minimum of 45 semester hours of credit. Must have exhibited high moral standards.
  4. GENEVIEVE SANDHOP ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  Two Scholarships, both have a GPA requirement of 3.00 in English, and a deadline of February 28th.  Scholarship #1: $3,000 per year. Recipient must be a full-time junior majoring in English, have taken both freshmen and sophomore English at SHSU, be seeking to become certified to teach high school English and have the intention to graduate from SHSU  Scholarship #2: Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student with a major or minor in English, have taken freshman English at SHSU and have the intention to graduate from SHSU.
  5. J. PHILIP GIBBS, JR. ENGLISH SCHOLARSHIP: $500 -- $1,000. English major enrolled in B.A. degree program. Completed 15 (or more) hours of English, including six hours of lower division English at Sam Houston State University. GPA in all SHSU work of at least 3.3. Must be of good moral character and has demonstrated leadership qualities in and outside the English Department. Should have exhibited intellectual curiosity, enterprise, and initiative.
  6. KATY & E. DON WALKER SR. ENDOWMENT FUND: Amount varies. Must be ranked as a sophomore, junior, or senior who has declared English, Theatre or Speech as a major. Must have demonstrated financial need and have met the academic requirements. Must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Scholarships are presented in April of each year and recipients are encouraged to repay the Endowment Funds on an interest-free basis on or before 10 years from graduation; payment shall not be a condition to any school scholarships.
  7. MARY McASHAN GIBBS ENGLISH/JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP: $400 -- $1,000. Female English or Journalism major. Must have completed a minimum of 64 semester hours credit but not exceeded 94hours (scholarship is designed for sophomores and juniors) and have an overall GPA of 2.0. Must have demonstrated leadership both within and outside the English Department; also, must have exhibited good moral character, initiative, enterprise, and intellectual curiosity. Preference will be given to students who meet the minimum qualifications stated above and have completed all their course work at SHSU.
  8. RUTHANNAH BROWN SCHOLARSHIP IN THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH: Amount varies. Must have graduated in the upper 15 percent of high school class. Must be an English major in the Bachelor of Arts degree with certification. Must have completed 23 semester hours at SHSU with an overall GPA of 3.0 and GPA in English of at least 3.3; also, 12 of the semester hours completed must be in English and a foreign language. Scholarship is renewable, subject to recommendation of scholarship committee.
  9. WELDON HALL, JR. ENDOWMENT IN ENGLISH: Amount varies. Scholarship is available to a Freshman student or transfer student who is enrolling at SHSU for the first time. Recipient must have graduated in the top ten percent of high school class, have a high school or community college GPA of at least 3.3, or have an ACT English score of at least 26. Recipient must be enrolled in a BA program and majoring in English. Deadline for application submission is July 15 each year.
  10. TEXAS REVIEW PRESS CREATIVE WRITING SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per year; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate (sophomore, junior or senior) or graduate student majoring in English with a creative writing emphasis, and have a publishing background in poetry, fiction or creative non-fiction. GPA requirement 3.0 overall; 3.2 in major. Application submission deadline: April 15th.
  11.   1. FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP FUND: The scholarship fund was established in honor of Dr. Hanna Lewis upon her retirement from Sam Houston State University to provide financial assistance to worthy foreign language majors who have met the following criteria: Recipient must (1) be a full time student enrolled at Sam Houston State University, with a filed degree plan showing a major in Spanish, French, or German; (2) be a junior or senior with at least 30 semester hours in residence at Sam Houston State University; (3) maintain a 3.0 GPA or above in his/her major language; (4) and must have completed at least six advanced semester hours in his/her major language at SHSU. It is the Program's wish that the scholarship be awarded in a two-year cycle: alternate years in (1) Spanish and (2) French or German. The first scholarship was in Spanish, the second in French or German with the same sequence followed thereafter. If there are no eligible applicants in the year of a given language being the scholarship language, the scholarship will be awarded to a major in the other language(s).
  2.   2. JAMES ELLISON KIRKLEY SCHOLARSHIP: Two awards (amount varies) to majors in history, political science, geography or sociology. Recipients are selected on basis of high academic achievement.

  5. LYMAN AND JANET BILHARTZ SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 per year; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student, majoring in History, with a minor in Premedical. Must maintain an overall GPA of 3.4, or have attained a minimum SAT score of 1200 if an entering freshman. Application deadline April 1.
  6. TEMPLE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded annually to a History Major who exhibits unusually high scholarly ability. Award amount varies.
  7. WILLIAM N. BOEHME ENDOWMENT: One scholarship (amount varies) awarded to a graduate student majoring in History with a minimum overall 3.0 GPA.
  8. ROBERT FULTON BATTISE "CHIEF KINA" SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies. Two annual scholarships awarded to undergraduate students at SHSU. One scholarship is awarded specifically to a member of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe. The other is awarded to a member of any Native American tribe. All applicants must have proof of tribal membership.
  9. ROGER LEE OLSON SCHOLARSHIP:  Amount varies. Awarded annually to a SHSU student. Recipients must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA.
  10. THOMAS M. CAMFIELD SCHOLARSHIP:  Amount varies. Awarded to a history major on the basis of high academic achievement. Prospective recipients must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and junior or senior standing.
  11. VIVIAN REID MEHR SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled at SHSU and majoring in any discipline; entering or returning to college after raising a family or planning a second career. 3.0 GPA requirement. Application deadline is March 1.
  12. JOAN L. COFFEY SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year; Recipient must be a graduate student enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours, majoring in history, be currently teaching history at the secondary school level or higher, or studying to become a history teacher at such a level. Preference will be given to non-traditional students returning to school, and/or to students teaching European and/or World History. 3.0 GPA requirement. Application deadline Feb. 1.

Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student majoring in Journalism at Sam Houston State University and who demonstrates financial need.   13. KAILAS AND BECKY RAO SCHOLARSHIP in HONOR of DR. FEROL ROBINSON: recipient must (1) be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU, majoring in journalism; (2) maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 or, if a freshman student, have an overall high school GPA of 3.0; (3) provide evidence of involvement in community service; (4) have a clear criminal record; and (5) demonstrate personal integrity.   14. HAL FULGHAM SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded each year to a photography major. The recipient is the winner of "BEST PORTFOLIO" at the SHSU Photographic Society's Annual Statewide High School Photo Contest. The winner receives approximately $200. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  15. JOHN A. ELMORE, JR. SCHOLARSHIPS: Awarded to outstanding students majoring in journalism who have consistently maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average during their freshman year at SHSU. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  16. JOHN W. SPONBERG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS: Awarded to outstanding students majoring in journalism who have consistently maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average during their freshman year at SHSU. (Application deadline: MAY 1)
  17. JOURNALISM ADVISORY COUNCIL INTERNSHIP FUND SCHOLARSHIP: A selection committee consisting of the Coordinator of the Journalism Program and the Chair of the Department of Public Communication shall select the recipients of the award each semester. The following criteria will be used in the selection process: A recipient must (1) be enrolled at SHSU, majoring in journalism; (2) have been selected to pursue an internship, and (3) have registered for JRN 498, Journalism Internship.   18. JOURNALISM AWARDS: This annual competition is open to journalism majors and minors. Judging is by practicing professionals in the area of the award. (Application deadline: April 1)

Recipient should have completed or is currently enrolled in RTV 374 -- Broadcast Journalism I. Also, recipient should have a 2.5 overall GPA, 3.0 overall RTV GPA, and have on file an official RTV (BFA in Broadcast Journalism) degree plan. Candidates should submit an official transcript, resume, typed essay (plus a separate sheet describing YOUR reason to pursue a career in broadcast journalism and why you are deserving of this prestigious scholarship), and a typed application form.   24. NATIONAL BROADCASTING SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP: $250 tuition scholarship for outstanding Freshman/Sophomore and Junior/Senior NBS Member. Freshman/Sophomore should have completed 12 hours and above at SHSU. Juniors/Seniors should have 60 hours & above completed SHSU hours (Aug/Dec. 1998 graduates only). Additional requirements are 2.5 overall GPA, 3.0 overall RTV GPA, and have on file an official degree plan declaring RTV (BFA/BA) major. Candidates should submit an official transcript, resume, typed essay (plus a separate page describing your participation in & contribution to BS), and typed application form.   27. OUTSTANDING JOURNALISM STUDENT AWARD: Given to a journalism major who is currently classified as a junior or senior. Criteria are: academic achievement, journalism achievement through department publications, campus activities, recognition for department (internships, awards, positive attitude), and service to other journalism students, in a leadership role. (Application deadline: APRIL 1)
  28. HOUSTONIAN STAFF SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is for student members of the Houstonian staff. It requires a commitment to continue working on staff. It is awarded based on financial need, contributions to the student newspaper and a grade point average of 2.5. (Application deadline is April 15 for the following year and November 15 for the spring semester.)
  29. DON AND FRANCES REID JOURNALISM ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU and majoring in Mass Communication with an emphasis in Print Journalism.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is March 10th.

  2. SENIOR ALUMNI ANGEL SCHOLARSHIP: $100 tuition scholarship for summer GRAD or $250 Fall Tuition Scholarship for December Graduate. Receipt must have 97 hours /above completed, a 3.0 overall GPA (3.0 overall RTV GPA), and has filed an official degree plan (indicating a RTV (BFA/BA) major). Qualified candidates will submit a resume (including NBS, KSHU/CABLE 7, Station Management, and internship involvement), a typed essay, official transcript, and a typed application form.   3. SOPHOMORE ALUMNI ANGEL SCHOLARSHIP: $250 Fall Tuition Scholarship. Receipt must have 33-64 hours /above completed, a 3.0 overall GPA (3.0 overall RTV GPA), and has filed an official degree plan indicating a RTV (BFA/BA) major). Qualified candidates will submit a (n) resume (including NBS and KSHU/CABLE 7 involvement), official transcript, and typed application form. (Application deadline: APRIL 8)
  4. THE MADISON WOLFE PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOLARSHIP FUND: The following criteria will be used in the selection process: A recipient must (1) be sophomore level/above; (2) have completed at least 6 photography hours in residence at SHSU; (3) appreciate and respect photography, whether or not that is his/her final career choice; (4) maintain an overall GPA of 2.5; and, (5) upon accepting the scholarship, students agree to submit at the end of each semester a one-page essay (100 words/more) relating to their academic growth and respect for photography. Nothing in this agreement shall preclude a student from receiving the scholarship more than once if the student meets and maintains these standards and requirements. (Application deadline April 1)

  1. ANTHONY KAWSI ANTIWI POLITICAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: Sophomore standing, 2.5 GPA overall and in Political Science, 24 credit hours at SHSU, 12 hours in Political Science. Financial need must be demonstrated.
  2. HALINA M. LUKASZEWSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Chemistry or Political Science Major (inquire as to availability and criteria of this award). Junior Standing. 3.0 GPA average.
  3. JAMES ELLISON KIRKLEY SCHOLARSHIP: Two awards, varying amounts; history, political science, geography or sociology majors, selected on basis of high academic achievement. Junior standing.
  4. POLITICAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: Awards are made to able men and women of good character who are majoring or minoring in Political Science; completed 12 hours of course work in Political Science (9 hours at SHSU), 3.0 overall GPA, 3.3 GPA in Political Science. Number and amount of awards vary.
  5. JUDGE JOHN MARTIN POLITICAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: Unspecified amount. Preference given to students from Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto and Trinity counties. Recipient must have an interest in the law or in teaching political science. Applicants must submit an essay and two letters of recommendation.GPA requirement 3.0. Application submission deadline is 10 days prior to the end of each fall and spring semester.

  4. THOMAS W. SATRE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Approximately $250 per year. Scholarship awarded to a student who is progressing toward either a major or minor in Philosophy or is enrolled in at least one philosophy course for the academic semester in question and be deemed deserving by the Coordinator of the Philosophy Program. JIM UMBEHR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time senior or graduate student in good standing, majoring in Psychology; not be eligible to receive a federal loan; and demonstrate financial need with a written essay.  GPA of 3.50 is required.  Application deadline is 12/10/08.

  2. RUTH A. DeBLANC SCHOLARSHIP: $500-$3000 per semester. Recipient must be a graduate student enrolled at SHSU in a minimum of six credit hours and majoring in Sociology; demonstrate financial need.GPA requirement 3.0 overall. Application submission deadline is Oct 1st-Feb 1st.
  3. PROFESSOR RAMSEY M. WOODS SOCIOLOGY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time student, in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in Sociology.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is April 1st (for Fall) and November 1st (for Spring).
  4.   3. KATY & E. DON WALKER SR. ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIPS: Granted to sophomore, junior and senior students who have declared English, Theatre, or Speech as their majors, have demonstrated financial need, and have maintained a 3.0 grade point average. (Application deadline: APRIL1st)
  4. MARIE L. UNDERWOOD ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. Recipient must be an undergraduate student, enrolled in a minimum of 9 credit hours at SHSU, majoring in Speech Communication, demonstrate financial need, be a sophomore or above with a minimum of 32 earned credit hours, demonstrate active involvement in on-campus and off-campus community activities.GPA requirement: 3.0 in major, 2.8 overall. AMERICAN INDIAN & ALASKA NATIVE GRANTS/FELLOWSHIPS: For information and applications, please write to Indian Fellowship Program, Office of Indian Education, 600 Independence S.W., Room 4300, Portals Building, Washington, D.C. 20202-6335 and the U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Indian Education Programs, 1849 C. FACULTY CENTENNIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 - $1000 per semester.  Recipient must be a full-time (a minimum of 12 credit hours for regular students, or a minimum of 9 credit hours for students involved in student teaching or internships), sophomore, junior, or senior student enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in any discipline.  If the recipient is in their final semester, they may take the course load required to graduate.  This scholarship is automatically renewable as long as the recipient continues to fulfill the requirements.  Recipient must be nominated by their department chair.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is March 31, 2008.  For additional information contact Teri Oparanozie, (936)294-1623, email: lib_tlo@shsu.edu
