Group Tours

Sam Houston State University welcomes many large school and sponsored groups to campus every year.

High School

These high school tours are geared towards students in grades 9-12th interested in learning more about higher education and SHSU programs. These tours typically last 2 hours and include a presentation on college admissions and financial aid information, as well as a guided walking tour. Program specific academic and service presentations are subject to availability.

High School group tours are held most weekdays year round. We do not offer group tours on Saturday or Sunday. To best serve your group, we ask that you submit your group tour request a minimum of 3 weeks in advance, however tours are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Group tour arrival times are 9AM, 11AM and 1PM.

We are able to accommodate groups of 15 to 75 students and require one chaperone per every 15 students. Due to high demand, we must limit each school to one group per semester.

    • Our high school group tours have two scheduling packages available.

Middle School

At SHSU we know how important it is to expose students to the benefits of higher education as early as possible. While we are unable to currently accommodate middle school students on campus due to limited resources, we are working on a fun, interactive lesson plan to help teachers introduce students to SHSU from their own campuses. We anticipate being able to offer this to teachers soon. If you're interested in this information, please click below.

As soon as our Kat-tastic plans are ready for you, we'll let you know!

On-Campus Dining

Groups are welcome to dine on campus. Dining is not included in your group tour. If you would like to arrange dining, please select the appropriate option in your request. We recommend that groups of 40+ participants dine at our dining hall, General's Market, due to space constraints at other dining facilities.

Residence Hall Tours

Residence halls are not included in our typical group tours. If your group is interested in touring a residence hall, our office will make arrangements for you after the guided campus tour.

Classroom Tours

Sam Houston State University is first and foremost a teaching institution. We are currently unable to provide tours of classrooms for visiting groups, as our classrooms are used year-round by our faculty and students.

Overnight Tours

SHSU does not currently have the residence hall availability to accommodate groups staying overnight. If you would like to stay overnight we suggest the University Hotel on campus.

Late Arrival Policy

Chaperones must contact the Visitor Center Coordinator if they foresee arriving late for a large group tour. Groups arriving late may not be able to participate in all scheduled visit events, as there may not be staff or tour guides available to accommodate the group.

Any group arriving 30+ minutes late automatically forfeits the guided campus tour. We would be more than happy to provide you with self-guided tour materials at that point.

Parking

  • Please do not drive large buses into the Visitor Center parking lot. Our Visitor Center Coordinator will greet you at the appropriate location and direct you to the appropriate parking.

Please excuse the heavy construction surrounding the Visitor Center and keep in mind the construction may delay your arrival time.
