September 2010 - Inaugural Ruck March

The Inaugural “Carry Their Load” 5-mile Ruck March began bright and early on Saturday, September 25, in conjunction with Parent’s Weekend and the first home football game of the season. SHSU’s Veterans Resource Center, along with the Collegiate Veterans Association, organized the march. Multiple volunteers from various organizations across the campus and community helped make this event a resounding success! Participants ranged in age from 2 (in a stroller) to 65. Mr. Virgil LaRue of Huntsville, a Bataan Death March survivor, was Grand Marshall and officially started the Ruck March. Over 350 participants from across Southeast Texas, in 4 different divisions, competed for various prizes including bragging rights. Taking top honors in the Military Heavy Division (Cadet) was the SHSU ROTC Ranger Challenge Team with a time of 1 hour and 5 minutes. Next was the Walker County Sheriffs’ Department (Law Enforcement), the Line Dogs of the Huntsville US Army Recruiting Office (Military) and the Texas Forest Service Team (EMS/Fire). The Ultra Heavy Division (law enforcement) was won by Team Ruckus of the Pasadena and League City SWAT teams. Then came Wade Dixon and Correy Tibbets of 1/23 Alumni (civilian). The Civilian Heavy Division was taken by Wally Barnes and the Docs (Civilian), Bearkat Football(Student Org), 3/5 Old School (Male), and Alpha Lambda Delta (Sorority). Michelle Rushing took the ladies individual class, AJ Alijaafresh won the male class (civilian), Rico Clay (Military), and the Registrars own Shanna House won the ladies individual military class.

Shortly after the event, VRC Recruiting Coordinator, Jacob Bullion, began planning the following year’s event and within days had multiple participants contact him about doing the event again. 100% of the proceeds from the Ruck March went go to the Wounded Warrior Project, The Huntsville Police Officers Association, and The Huntsville Volunteer Fire Dept. Special thanks to the ladies in the Registrars Office who showed up early and helped make the Ruck March a great event!
