Health, Medical

Counseling & Crisis Support

  • SHSU Counseling Center - Offers personal counseling, outreach/consultation, training programs, and services for students with disabilities. Their website also has Help Screens on many different topics like test anxiety, study skills, eating disorders, love and relationships, and relaxation techniques.
  • Jack Staggs Counseling Clinic - offers free counseling services to all clients. Located on the SHSU campus, but do not have to be a SHSU student to use.
  • SAAFE House - in Huntsville. SAAFE HOUSE is committed to empowering victims of family violence and sexual assault by providing individualized immediate, free, and confidential services.  Their goal is to prevent family violence and sexual assault by educating the community. SAAFE House provides crisis intervention, advocacy, and support services empowering survivors to seek new beginnings and rebuild lives free from the effects of violence. We provide services to all victims of family and sexual violence, and assist clients in the healing process with former and current victimizations alike. 24/7 Emergency Hotline (936) 291-3369 and (936) 327-2513
  • Montgomery County Women's Center - The Montgomery County Women's Center is a private non-profit organization serving the victims and survivors of family violence, sexual assault, stalking, and sexual abuse in Montgomery, Harris, and Liberty counties through offices in five satellite locations. Our organization is a leader in delivering innovative programs and caring interaction to all victims and survivors whose lives have been touched by violence. The agency is well funded, widely respected, and a successful collaborator working to rebuild lives by putting an end to violence. The Women's Center offers advocacy, counseling, crisis intervention, education, housing, legal, scholarships, and shelter.  They also have a 24 hour crisis hotline (936.441.7273)
  • Counseling and Assessment Center at Texas A&M University - Open to the public (do not have to be a TAMU student to use). Services provided on a sliding scale, based on your income.
  • Crisis Text Line - Text HOME to 741741 to talk to trained crisis counselors through this free, confidential, nationwide hotline, available 24/7. Crisis Text Line does not charge for the support it provides. Standard messaging fees are waived on Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint, and texts to 741741 will not appear on your phone bill if you use one of these carriers.
  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline - call 1-800-273-8255. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They're committed to improving crisis services and advancing suicide prevention by empowering individuals, advancing professional best practices, and building awareness

Rent, Utility Assistance

  • Montgomery County Emergency Assistance, Inc. is a private, non-profit agency created in 1981 to serve the residents of Montgomery County, Texas who are experiencing an unexpected financial need or crisis. Their mission is to provide emergency financial assistance to families and individuals to help stabilize situations that threaten their health, safety and well-being.

  • We need resources! Please email our office if you know of a Public Transportation resource in the area.

Pet Care

  • Rita B. Huff Humane Society Free Spay/Neuter Program - available to residents of the City of Huntsville, Walker County, City of Trinity, Trinity County, and the City of Madisonville. This shelter is in Huntsville, TX close to the football stadium on the SHSU campus.


Legal Advice

  • SHSU Student's Legal Services - The mission of Students Legal Services is to provide quality consultation and authoritative resources to students with legal problems. As an integral partner in the educational process, Students Legal Services provides these legal services to foster personal growth and development. This holistic approach in co-curriculum involvement will be accomplished by successfully performing the major goals articulated by Students Legal Services.

Financial Advice

  • SHSU Student Money Management Center - The SHSU Money Management Center (MMC) is a financial outreach and educational program administered by the Sam Houston State University Division of Student Services. The Mission of the Money Management Center is to improve the financial well-being of our students by providing the unbiased education, counseling, tools, and solutions students need in order to achieve financial independence.
