INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE FOR COUNCIL FOR EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN

Four officers of the Sam Houston Council for Exceptional Children student chapter of SHSU attended the International Conference for Council for Exceptional Children (SHCEC), held in San Antonio, Texas at the Grand Hyatt Hotel and Conference Center. This is where thousands of special educators, professors, and researchers in the field of special education come together to grow, inform, and change the world’s perspective on students and adults with exceptionalities.
While at the conference, the officers were able to attend a multitude of different sessions. Each officer was able to decide on which class he or she wanted to attend. Some of the sessions offered were, Early Childhood Transitions, Deaf Education, Pre-service Teaches Transitions, Using Math Manipulatives, Student Leadership, and Bullying Students with Disabilities. The officers gained so much knowledge from the sessions, and were able to bring back many different ideas and information to share in class and at monthly meetings. Another session that the SHCEC members were able to attend was the Texas Council for Children with Behavior Disorders, where the offices are also part of the student committee.
This was also the annual general meeting, where everyone in the state comes together to elect officers and plan for the upcoming year. Since the SH student chapter is so involved with Texas Council For Exceptional Children (TCEC), they helped host the Texas social. This event brought about 300-400 people, and they enjoyed a Texas Country Band, food, and a raffle for pre-service teachers. At Nationals, SHCEC members were able to meet with other student chapters and make plans for future collaborations with other student groups. Back
