Samantha Ward & Volunteerism

volunteerism

By Cheyenne Moore, Student Assistant:

The Sam Houston State University Bearkat motto is “The Measure of a Life is its Service” and in the office of Student Legal & Mediation Services, our new attorney, Samantha Ward, has exhibited that philosophy. As an alumnus of Central Methodist University, she has been featured in its alumni newsletter as an active alumni and volunteer.

The article highlights Samantha’s rich background as a volunteer as well as her motivations for volunteerism. Samantha began her volunteerism as an undergraduate at Central Methodist, where she obtained her B.A. in Political Science and Spanish. As an undergraduate, she was a member of Sigma Pi Alpha, a sorority that supported charities on and off campus. She also spent time working with the Central Missouri Food bank and Missouri United Methodist church.

When she moved to Huntsville, she joined the Junior Service League in 2015, where she continued to volunteer with local and national charities such as Meals on Wheels and the Houston Food Bank. Samantha’s most rewarding moments while volunteering include the personal connections made through volunteerism.

Samantha’s inspiration for volunteerism stems from her intrinsic gratitude and thankfulness. She says, “I have been so blessed to receive such a great education from Central Methodist and from the University of Missouri. I have been blessed professionally as an attorney, professor, and professional speaker. I feel like this is one way to show my gratitude for all that I have been given”. Samantha also has the desire to be an example for younger generations, including her son.

Samantha’s advice for younger interests in volunteerism is to immediately begin with the local community. By beginning at the local level, you will be able to grow your personal network and ability to volunteer on a national and global scale.
