The Zeta Mu chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia at Sam Houston State recently received top honors for their work over the past three years. The Province Merit Award is the highest award a chapter can receive. It is presented every three years at the National Convention, and recognizes the superior accomplishment of one chapter within each province.  The award is given to the chapter that has received the most citations during the course of the triennium, with a minimum of 15 citations needed in order to be eligible. In Province 40, SHSU's Zeta Mu chapter was recognized for their accomplishments from 2009-2012. Congratulations on this outstanding award!

Colleges Against Cancer hosted Relay For Life of SHSU 2011 with 1,385 Participants and 87 Teams...by far the largest Relay CAC has have ever hosted at Sam Houston State University! The campus community came together for a fun-filled night of live entertainment, free food, and activities to raise funds for The American Cancer Society.

Events included the annual Ms. Relay pageant, Relay Idol (karaoke), and many other activities such as scavenger hunts and themed laps.  Student organizations hosted various fundraisers throughout the night and sold t-shirts, baked goods, and bracelets.  The biggest fundraiser of the night was the University Police Department's "jail".

Together, SHSU celebrated survivors, remembered those lost to this horrible disease, and fought back against cancer.  With the help of many Bearkats, Colleges Against Cancer raised over $36,000 and still has donations coming in.  Congratulations to Sam Houston State University!  Eat 'em Up Kats!

Sam Houston Council for Exceptional Children supports the community through volunteering in various events that help strengthen the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, according to Cynthia Simpson, SHCEC co-adviser and associate professor of special education.

The SHCEC student officers recently volunteered at the Special Olympics Texas Area 6 Basketball Competition held at Livingston Junior High School. Simpson said this was the last basketball game of the season and a wonderful opportunity to offer support to Special Olympic Texas athletes.

SCEC is a student organization dedicated to meeting the needs of parents, students, and educators of children with disabilities. The chapter has nearly 100 active members and holds monthly meetings in the Teacher Education Center designed around current topics in the field of special education.

SHSU CONSTRUCTION ASSOCIATION COLLECTS 2,000 CANS IN FOOD DRIVE

The Sam Houston Construction Association is in the Agriculture and Industrial Technology Department and consists of approximately 40 members who strive to incorporate professional experience with higher education. In fall 2010, the group was successful with their 1st Annual Can-Struction Food Drive. To promote the drive, the group constructed a model of Austin Hall in Bearkat Plaza made entirely of cans collected during the drive. When the drive concluded on Nov. 20 the group counted a total of 1,830 cans, well beyond their initial goal.

“The students and faculty at Sam Houston State University have contributed to a great cause. The goal was to collect 1000 cans for the food bank but after the first week, I challenged them and raised the goal to 1500 cans,” SHCA President Lance Muzyka said.  “Being the first year, I did not know how big of challenge to set but they keep on exceeding the expectations each and every time. We, as an organization, would like to thank everyone who has contributed.”
