All Girl Cheer - Tryouts and Workouts

Workdays:

 


 

Workdays will be an open process free to any candidates attending.  Any ladies coming to workout for a workday will need to bring proof of medical insurance and have a completed waiver of liability.  The waiver can be found under our forms link online.   Attire for any workday should include sports bra and biker shorts or fitting t-shirt and shorts with appropriate shoes.

February 15,   1-4 pm Co-ed & All-Girl

March 22, 1-4 pm Co-ed & All-Girll

 

Try-Outs:

May 2, 6pm (This is first phase if you make it through this round you return next day.)

May 3, 10am(This is second pahse if you make it through this round you return next day.)

May 4, 12pm (Third and final round.)

*All dates are mandator

 


 

Try-outs will occur in early May. Try-Outs are an open process and require the following:

 

  • Completed recruit questionnaire (available online)
  • Completed waiver of liability form (available online)
  • Proof of primary medical insurance
  • $20 Application fee (Checks made out to SHSU)
  • Proof of enrollment/admittance to Sam Houston State (current students must have a 2.0 GPA)

 

The above information should be turned in prior to try-outs to the Spirit Programs Office. If you have any questions regarding your eligibility please contact the Spirit Programs Office.

Common Try-Out Questions:

What is the Try-out Process like?

 


 

On the first evening, candidates will come in and demonstrate their standing and running tumbling abilities. At this point a cut will be made. After the first cut, candidates will stunt and be taught the try-out material. If needed, an additional cut will be made after this portion of try-outs. On the final day candidates will demonstrate the material and stunt. A final cut will be posted immediately following the conclusion of the second day.

Can I Try-out for both squads?

 


 

Yes. However, in the process of try-outs you may be moved from one group to the other at the discretion of the staff.

What do I need to wear?

 


 

All applicants need to be in Sports bra and spandex or fitting shorts and top.

What are the preferred skills?

 


 

Tumbling (required):
Back handspring
Running- Roundoff series back handspring

Tumbling (preferred):
Standing back tuck
Back handspring back tuck
Roundoff back handspring back tuck

Stunt:
Lib
Stretch full down

Cheer:
Ability to lead crowd
Sharpness and placement of motions
Voice

When do we find out who made the squad?

 


 

A final list will be posted upon conclusion of try-outs indicating which candidates made the team.

Application Standards for Try-outs

 


 

New students must be admitted to Sam Houston State University for the fall semester in order to try-out. Sam Houston State University students must have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average and be in good standing with the University. All students not accepted or accepted on probation to the university must first speak with the Advisor and Coach to determine eligibility for try-outs.

A completed application form, questionnaire, current transcript, picture, and proof of medical insurance must be turned in with a twenty-dollar application fee two days prior to try-outs. (Do not have pictures made especially for this application packet.)

Video Try-Out Process:

The video try-out process is for all candidates unable to attend our regular try-outs held on campus. However, attendance to try-outs is strongly recommended.

NOTE: No official position will be offered to a video try-out candidate before he / she has attended a scheduled workday or practice. You may call the Spirit Programs Office at 936-294-4239 to schedule your visit.

Please adhere to the following guidelines when submitting a video:

• A completed video, recruit questionnaire, proof of admission, high school/college transcript and $20 application fee must be received by the Spirit Programs Office by the Thursday prior to the first day of try-outs.
• VHS or DVD formats accepted.

All video submissions must include these skills in the following order:

Material:

• One chant incorporating tumbling (choreographed by candidate)
• One cheer incorporating tumbling (choreographed by candidate)

Tumbling:

• Standing Back Tuck
• Standing tumbling skills (ex. back handspring back tuck)
• Optional standing tumbling skills
• One running tumbling pass
• Optional running tumbling pass

Stunting:

• All stunts below may be performed from the hands level, as a toss, a full-up, or a rewind:
• Liberty
• Stretch full- down or double down
• Cupie
• Optional stunt to stunt sequence

Interview:

Please answer the following questions on tape

-Why do you want to cheer for Sam Houston State?

-What do you believe the role of a collegiate cheerleader should be?

-What are your goals after college?

-Would you like to be considered for the All-Girl Cheer team if you

are not selected for the co-ed cheer team?



Notification of Selection for Video Candidates:

All candidates offered a scholarship or non-scholarship position will be posted on the SHSU Spirit Programs home page following completion of the try-out process. If any video candidtate has not attended a workout in person, he or she may be contacted to set-up an in person workout so that a final decision can be made.
