University Camp Facilities

University Camp is a one of a kind recreation and retreat facility that offers the university community an ever increasing range of facilities.

Open to the university community for day and limited overnight use, it's an ideal spot for a variety of functions. Currently available for use are the University Camp's main dining hall (complete with kitchen), barbecue pit, fishing pier, picnic areas and high and low challenge course.

  • Bearkat Lodge

This 4,000 square foot multipurpose building is the crown of our University Camp Facilities. Being the largest building in the camp, it will be capable of accommodating over 200 people and will play host to many of the university's largest special events. With a covered porch overlooking the water, it will truly become a definitive symbol of Sam Houston Pride.

  • Challenge Course

Featuring a three-tower high elements course, complete with a unique zip line, super swing, and a cargo net, the challenge course is one of the main attractions to the University Camp. Perfect for leadership and team-building, participants can choose to challenge the high elements, or work closer to the ground with our 12 element low-ropes course.

  • Covered Pavilion

This large meeting area is well utilized in the summer and a short walk from the Bearkat Lodge and the Dining Facility. It has room for basketball and volleyball and is a large multi-use site for users of the camp. Dances, sporting events, and other activities are common in this area.

  • Dining Hall

One of the first buildings on the main camp, the dining hall has a full service kitchen and seating for up to 200 guests. A front deck overlooking the lake is in close proximity to the Bearkat Lodge. This is the main location for all food service preparation and is one of the camp's most heavily utilized buildings.

  • Fishing/Boating Docks

Whether it is catfish, bream, largemouth bass, or the famous Lake Livingston spring white bass run, University Camp has enough waterfront property to accommodate your angling interest.

  • Raven Room

This 2000-square foot building will accommodate conferences, small group workshops, student groups, and corporate meetings. Located in the main camp area, it provides integral programming space for rental groups, as well as general university functions.

  • Recreation Field

One of the first amenities you will see upon entrance to the camp, this 52,000 square foot irrigated grass playfield is the ideal place for hosting large outdoor functions and sporting activities such as soccer, flag football, ultimate frisbee, and other games. Tradition is kept alive with the topsoil being trucked in from Pritchett Field, one of the original homes of Bearkat athletics.

  • Residential Bunk Houses

Emulating the dogtrot style cabins General Sam Houston utilized in his day, each side of these residential cabins will house 26 individuals as well as providing an open air lounge and meeting space. These four cabins will also serve as the sleeping quarters for those programs which choose to utilize overnight accommodations.

  • Swimming Pool

Consisting of a bath house and eight lap lanes, the pool provides a luxury amenity not normally seen in outdoor camp facilities. Specialty programming is provided for camp participants as well as the area community. A large deck with a custom pergola, as well as water volleyball, basketball and water polo options will provide plenty of opportunities for fun while soaking up the hot Texas sun.
