Student Legislative Trip

About the Program

Every two years when the legislature is in session, the Department of Leadership Initiatives will select a delegation of undergraduate and graduate students to represent Sam Houston State University in a visit to the Texas State Capitol in Austin. During this experience, students will personally interact with state representatives, state senators, and other high-ranking government officials. Students will also attend and observe state committee meetings to WORD the inner-workings of the legislature. Selected participants will meet with the Department of Leadership Initiatives before the trip to enhance their skills in communication, professionalism, and leadership, as well as to learn about the Texas State Legislature.

Transportation, meals, and lodging will be provided by the Department of Leadership Initiatives. Applicants are encouraged to discuss possible class absences with their professors before applying for this opportunity. Letters of Excuse for classes will be written as necessary, but the decision to excuse an absence is ultimately up to the individual professor.

Requirements for Selected Delegates

  • Attend mandatory delegation meetings.
  • Abide by expectations set forth by SHSU and the Department of Leadership Initiatives.
  • Once selected and confirmed, delegates are responsible for following through with their commitment

If a delegate should fail to attend mandatory delegation meetings and/or the Student Legislative Trip, he/she will be expected to reimburse the Department of Leadership Initiatives for the cost of the trip.
