Study Abroad in Costa Rica

Zipline to Clinical in Costa Rica for Community Nursing

Program Overview

Community health nursing practice is characterized by the concept of Community-as-Client. Many practice areas in nursing do provide services to a population aggregate. This implies, that although some of the actual care provided may be to individuals, program planning and outreach will be based on health needs and characteristics of an identified aggregate within the community. Examples of such programs include: school health, occupational health, primary health care clinic models, disease prevention and treatment programs, health department maternity or well-child services, in which services provided are designed to meet identified needs of the particular population served.

Students will spend 5 hours per day, four days a week for ten days (total of 40 hours) in a clinical/ school/daycare/community setting. The students will have completed the didactic portion of this course plus 50 out of the total 90 clinical hours during the spring semester in Huntsville. They will receive an "incomplete" at the end of spring semester. The students traveling to Costa Rica will complete the remaining 40 hours out of the total 90 clinical hours in Costa Rica. Following completion, students will earn their grade for NURS 4030, Community Nursing.
