Bucket List Astronomy Tour

The sky from Arizona to Australia!

Program Overview

The BLAsT Class allows students to learn bother the northern and southern skies, experience the winter solstice during June, see constellations and the Moon “upside down and backwards,” witness our nearest galactic neighbors from Australia, visit observatories where astronomical history was made (e.g. the discovery of Pluto, galactic redshifts), witness the effects of living in a dynamic, changing universe (Meteor Crater, Arizona), learn Aboriginal astronomy and cosmological myths, see first-hand the intricacies of Native American time-keeping (V-V Rance)...and pet koalas.

COURSES OFFERED

  • PHYS 1311: The Solar System (3CR)
  • PHYS 1111: Solar System Lab (1CR)
  • PHYS 1312: Stars & Galaxies (3CR)
  • PHYS 1112: Stars & Galaxies Lab (1CR)

Students may take one or both of the offered courses along with the appropriate lab to earn up to 8 credits of science core!

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS

Permission from the instructor.

HOUSING ARRANGMENTS

In Arizona, students will stay at the Arizona Mountain Inn, a complex of large cabins accomodating as many as sixteen or as few as three. In Australia, students will stay in a combination of hostels and hotel rooms, depending on the town.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

A group flight will be arranged by the faculty member from Houston to Flagstaff, and then to Melbourne which will be included in the program costs.

PROGRAM COST

$4250

  • Includes: Airfare, lodging, meals, in-country travel (in Arizona and Australia), site visits, health insurance.
  • Not Included: Tuition (Approx. $1100 for each 3 hour course), spending money
