Study Abroad in South Africa

Field Studies in Southern Africa (BIOL) /
Honors College African Seminar (HONR)

Program Overview

Biology: 4-week study in Zimbabwe focused on the natural history of the region. Students will study the modern biota including mammals, reptiles, birds and insects, as well as the evolutionary history of the region. We will also spend a large portion of our time with hands-on experiential learning. Although some lectures will be delivered, most learning will come from service learning, personal explorations, and individual & group projects.

Honors: This seminar will take a 3-week tour through Zimbabwe where students will learn and discuss the history, cultures, landscapes, and biota of the region. To achieve this, we will visit archaeological sites, rock art, museums, national parks and world heritage sites. Students will interact and work with local scientists and guides as well as trained faculty. We will also participate in service activities, such as working with a local orphanage and trying to help get water to elephants in national parks.
