DEPARTMENT OF ART

 

  1. ART ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: The Art Endowment Scholarship is awarded annually each spring semester. Students are nominated by faculty members and are then required to submit a portfolio for review by the faculty. Recipients are then selected based on grade point averages overall and in art and on artistic ability. Recipients of this award are also required to have a show exhibited their work during the first summer school semester in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery.
  2. MARJORIE LEVERTON BOEHME SCHOLARSHIP FOR ART STUDENTS: The Marjorie Leverton Boehme Scholarship for Art Students was established in 1999 by Marjorie Leverton Boehme to provide financial assistance Art students. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient of this scholarship. The recipient of this award must be a full time student at Sam Houston State University of Junior or Senior status majoring in Art.
  3. ELKINS LAKE KUNTZ-NELSON MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Elkins Lake Kuntz-Nelson Memorial Art Scholarship Endowment was established in 1988 by the board of Elkins Lake Art League to enable young artists to pursue and encourage excellence in painting. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and paintings submitted for this scholarship may be of any medium. The recipient must maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall and a 3.0 in Art and have at least one full year of studies left to complete at Sam Houston State University. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  4. HAL FULGHAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: The Hal Fulgham Memorial Scholarship was established in 1990 in the memory of Hal Fulgham. Recipients of this award must be an entering freshman student at Sam Houston State University majoring in Photography and submit work for review to the Art Department. Recipients must also have been a Texas resident for at least five years. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art Office.
  5. EDWARD GEESLIN ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Edward Geeslin Art Endowment was established in 1971 by retired professor Edward Davis Geeslin to encourage deserving young men and women of good character who have demonstrated their potential successful achievement as students and are in need of financial assistance. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient.
  6. WELDON HALL JR. SCHOLARSHIP: The Weldon Hall Jr. Endowment in Art was established in 2004 in honor of Weldon Hall Jr. Recipients of this award must be an entering freshman student at Sam Houston State University majoring in Art and submit artwork to the art department for review by the faculty. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  7. RUTH WYNNE THOMASON HOLLINSHEAD ENDOWMENT FUND IN ART: The Ruth Wynne Thomason Hollinshead Endowment Fund in Art was established in 2002 in memory of Ruth Wynne Thomason Hollinshead. The recipient of this scholarship must be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in any discipline within the Art Department, demonstrate financial need, and maintain a 3.0 grade point average overall. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient.
  8. EMMETTE JACKSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The Emmette Jackson Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 in honor of Emmette Jackson to provide financial assistance to worthy photography majors. This scholarship is awarded annually each Spring and a committee of photography faculty shall select the recipient of the scholarship. Recipients must be enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in Photography, maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall, and be classified as a junior or senior.
  9. JESSE H. JONES AND MARY GIBBS JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The Jesse H. Jones and Mary Gibbs Jones Endowed Scholarships are awarded to outstanding full-time resident Liberal Arts or Graphic Arts majors who have maintained a 3.0 grade point average at Sam Houston State University. Jesse H. Jones and Mary Gibbs Jones Endowed Scholars will receive $500 per semester for the fall and spring semester following the award.   10. STANLEY E. AND RUTH L. LEA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies. Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student in good standing, majoring in Art, exhibit exceptional creative talent and ability in his/her studies in the art of printmaking, or drawing, excluding computer graphics, monoprints and photographs.  GPA of 3.0 in art is required. 
  11. CLEM OTIS MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Clem Otis Memorial Art Scholarship Endowment was established by the Otis family in 1983 in honor of Mrs. Clem Otis. She was an accomplished landscape artist who touched the memories of people across the country with her oils and acrylics. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and paintings submitted for this scholarship must be done in oil. The recipient of this scholarship must have a 2.5 grade point average at Sam Houston State University.
  12. CHARLES PEBWORTH SCULPTURE SCHOLARSHIP: The Charles Pebworth Sculpture Endowment was established in 1993 in honor of Charles Pebworth’s 36 years of dedicated service, to enable young students to pursue their studies in sculpture. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty will provide nominations or students may nominate themselves by submitting a portfolio of sculptural works. The recipient of this scholarship must have a 3.0 grade point average in Art, exhibit outstanding abilities in sculpture and must have one full year of studies left to complete at Sam Houston State University. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  13. POLLEY ART AWARDS: The Polley Art Award was established in 1970 by retired professor Joseph Polley Paine to encourage excellence in painting. Mr. Paine placed money from the sale of his paintings into this award fund during the last years of his teaching career and dedicated it to the memory of the Polley family and its Texas pioneer heritage. This scholarship is awarded annually during the spring semester, based on work that was completed during the immediately preceding fall semester painting class. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office.
  14. JAMES B. AND MARILYN C. SHEPARD SCHOLARSHIP: The James B. and Marilyn C. Shepard Endowment Fund was established in 1999. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient. The recipient must be a native born US citizen, be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in Art and maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall. First preference will be for students studying sculpture.
  15. STUDENT ART ASSOCIATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU and majoring in any discipline within the Department of Art, and be an active member of the Student Art Association.  An overall GPA of 2.75 is required.  A GPA of 3.25 is required in their major.  Application deadline is the Spring semester.
  16. MADISON AND MARTHA WOLFE PHOTOGRAPHY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  Amount per year varies. Recipient must be a full-time sophomore or above, have completed at least six photography hours in-residence at SHSU, appreciate and respect photography whether or not that is his/her final career choice and submit a portfolio of six to eight photographic images.  Upon accepting the scholarship, recipients agree to submit at the end of each semester a one-page essay (minimum of 100 words) relating to their academic growth and respect for photography.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Deadline date for application submission is the Spring Semester.  Interested individuals should request an application from the art office.
  17. KENNETH ZONKER ENDOWMENT: The Kenneth Zonker Endowment Fund was established in 2003 by the Zonker family in honor of Kenneth Zonker. This scholarship is awarded annually and a committee within the Art Department selects the recipient. The recipient must be a full time student at Sam Houston State University majoring in Art, submit one piece of art work (in any medium) that was not used for a class project or grade, and was created without supervision, and maintain a 3.0 grade point average in Art. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art office
  18. ROBERT A. AND CAROLYN W. WERNER SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any program within the Department of Art and demonstrate financial need. GPA of 3.00 is required.  Deadline for application submission is the Fall semester. 

Funding for each of these scholarships may vary significantly from year to year therefore the exact amount of each scholarship cannot be determined, nor is renewal guaranteed.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC
 

  1. ALVIS AUTREY VOICE AWARD: $300. per year, $150. per semester, Music major, outstanding vocal music student, completed at least four semesters of study, anticipates at least one more year in residence, chosen by the Department of Music Voice Facility only.
  2. BETTY FRIZZELL MUSIC AWARD: $150. per year, $75. per semester, Music major, 3.0 minimum overall GPA; sophomore, junior, or senior, based on character, scholarship, leadership, service, and need.
  3. CHARLES AND HELEN LINDSAY ENDOWMENT FUND IN MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in an academic program in the School of Music with a preference given to students pursuing a degree in Choral Music Education.  2.85 GPA requirement.  Deadline for application submission is 4/15/07. 
  4. C.R. HACKNEY AWARD FOR MUSIC EDUCATION: $200. per year, $100. per semester, Music education major, completing at least one year in residence, outstanding potential as a music educator, anticipating one more year in residence.
  5. DAVID BERNSHAUSEN MUSIC ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies; Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students majoring in an academic program in the School of Music, be an excellent instrumentalist or vocalist, demonstrate financial need, and be from the city of Yoakum or Lavaca county or Wharton county. This is a four-year award as long as the recipient continues to meet the criteria. 2.0 GPA requirement.
  6. ELAINE McDONALD MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP: $300 per year. Scholarship established for students majoring in music and/or currently performing in a major ensemble in the School of Music (choir, band, orchestra, or accompanying). Recipient must have achieved sophomore or higher standing and have been enrolled full time at SHSU for one year prior to the semester of the scholarship audition and be enrolled full time during the semester of the audition. Members of Sigma Alpha lota are eligible to audition for the scholarship. GPA requirement is 2.85. Deadline for application submission is February of each year.
  7. INEZ MEACHUM POWELL AWARDS IN MUSIC: $250. per year, two students selected, Music major, outstanding academic attainment, character of unquestioned merit, anticipating one more year in residence. Not for incoming Freshmen.
  8. LOUISE POWELL OUTSTANDING PERFORMER AWARD: $500. per year, $250. per semester, Music major, outstanding piano performance; chosen by Department of Music Piano Faculty only. Not for incoming Freshmen.
  9. MARGARET McPHERSON PIANO AWARD: $100. per year, $50. per semester, piano major, 3.0 GPA or better, undergraduate, unusual contribution of piano area through solo performances and/or accompanying; chosen by entire Music Faculty. Not for incoming freshmen.
  10. MUSIC PERFORMANCE SCHOLARSHIPS: $100.-$1000. per year, four year (renewable on a yearly basis), scholarships determined by audition. Renewal requirements depend on performance skills, grades, progress, and musical development.
  11. VELMA McDERMETT AWARD FOR MUSIC EDUCATION: $200. per year, $100. per semester; Music education major, completing at least one year in residence, outstanding potential as a music educator, anticipating one more year in residence.
  12. VIRGINIA IRVIN MUSIC EDUCATION AWARD: $225.-$450. per semester, one student selected, Music Education Major, 3.0 minimum overall GPA, must be at least junior standings, character of unquestioned merit.
  13. BRYAN HOLLY HORNBECK ENDOWED STRING SCHOLARSHIP: Junior or senior student who has participated at least one year in the SHSU Symphony Orchestra. Demonstrated commitment to music department and maintain an overall 3.0 GPA.
  14. CARGILL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in instrumental music.  Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor.  GPA of 3.0 is required. 
  15. HAROLD R. BRADLEY MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be an outstanding full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in music with guitar as the major instrument (This can include performance, music education or music therapy, as long as their principle instrument is guitar.); demonstrate the values and character traits of the honoree, Mr. Bradley - integrity, character, and strong values-; and have an ability to achieve their full potential of musical talent.  GPA of 3.0 is required. 
  16. JIMMY AND LINDY MILLER SCHOLARSHIP IHO OF KRISTEN MILLER JACKSON: $3,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing, majoring or minoring in Choral Music Education; be participating in the student teaching program in the current semester or following semester; be of good moral character; and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Annual application deadline is February 28th. 
  17. MARGO AND MIKE CROOK MUSIC ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing and majoring in music with an emphasis in piano.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is May 3rd. 
  18. ED AND PAT GRIFFITHS MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP:  $5,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in music performance with an emphasis in piano; demonstrate a strong talent in the piano as determined by the Director of Keyboard Studies.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is February 15th. 
  19. CHARLES W. JONES III AND DAVID E. PAYNE VIOLIN SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman in good standing; majoring in any discipline in the School of Music with violin as their major instrument; pass the auditions at SHSU.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is March 31st. 
  20. DAVID AND GRETTLE PAYNE ENDOWED MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or part-time graduate student taking a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester, in good standing and majoring in any program within the School of Music; demonstrate excellent musicianship in their field of study.  GPA of 3.0 is required.  Application deadline is April 15th. 
  21. SOFIA VICTORIA MENDEZ PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline within the performing arts; demonstrate financial need; and demonstrate a high level of skill in their major.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.
  22. MARI MONTGOMERY REALTY MUSIC THERAPY/VOCAL CONCENTRATION SCHOOL:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing and be a voice student majoring in music therapy.  GPA of 2.75 is required.  Application deadline is May 1st. 
  23. ISAIAH RAY MEMORIAL MUSIC EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Donor will reward one annual scholarship of $1,000 to a full-time student in good standing; majoring in Music Education; who maintains a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and demonstrates a financial need. 
  24. NANCY GAERTNER PERFORMING ARTS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate in good standing and majoring in any program within the Department of Theatre and Dance and/or the School of Music.
  25. JAMES W. SELF MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Full time incoming freshman, be a graduate of C.E. King High School, major in instrumental music (first) vocal music (second) or any major within the department of Mass communication (third choice) demonstrate financial need and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0. The donors preference is for criteria #2 to be given the highest priority.
  26. MARY S. AND G. SCOTT McCARLEY PERFORMING ARTS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing; majoring in dance, music, music therapy, theatre, or musical theatre.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.
  27. ELLEN HAPPE PHILLIPS MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND:  $2,500 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing, enrolled at SHSU, majoring in music; be a woodwind, brass or percussionist in the wind ensemble or symphonic band and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate a financial need.
  28. MARIE COLEY ATKINSON MIDDLETON MEMORIAL MUSIC ENDOWMENT:  $2,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate in good standing majoring in voice; minimum overall GPA of 2.8.  Financial need is to be considered.  Application deadline is March 1st for the following fall semester.
  29. MARGO AND MIKE CROOK GUITAR SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in music with an emphasis in guitar; have completed all University and School of Music enrollment, academic, and application requirements; maintain an overall GPA of 3.0.  Deadline: January, for the following fall semester.

  1. WILLIAM F. BROWN AWARD: $2500 for year; awarded by Theatre faculty to a Theatre or Musical Theatre major, demonstrating financial need, maintaining an overall GPA of 3.0.
  2. MARGARET A. CONWELL MEMORIAL MUSICAL THEATRE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate majoring in Musical Theatre. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor; GPA 3.0; Application deadline, April 1st.
  3. KEVIN J. DODSON THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP: $2000 per year; $1000 a semester, awarded to upper level Theatre majors with an emphasis in directing. Application to theatre faculty, based on talent, grades, and citizenship.
  4. RUTH WYNNE THOMASON HOLLINSHEAD ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN THEATER: Amount varies.  Recipient must be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in Theatre and demonstrate financial need.  Special consideration will be given to students with an interest in costume design. GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is April 1st. 
  5. HUMPHREYS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS: $1000 per year; $500 per semester, for incoming transfer and freshmen Theatre and Musical students. Students apply by audition, letters of recommendation, and interviews.
  6. JIM AND JULEE MILLER THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP FUND: $1,000 per year; Recipients must be full-time students, sophomore, junior, senior, majoring in theatre. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor; GPA 3.0; Application deadline, April 1st.
  7. MARK MITCHELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $750 per semester for continuing students given by Former Student Association. Awards are granted through the Theatre faculty.
  8. NICHOLSON-BOZEMAN SCHOLARSHIPS IN MUSICAL THEATRE: $1000 per semester, to continuing Musical Theatre students. Applications must be made to Theatre faculty. Awards are based on talent, grades and need.
  9. ERICA STARR LIVE YOUR DREAM MEMORIAL THEATRE ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $3,000 per year. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate in good standing and majoring in musical theatre, if in any one year there are no qualified musical theatre major applicants, then students majoring in theatre and showing an interest in the technical side of theatre (lighting, costumes, scenery, etc.) will be considered; demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.00 is required.  Application deadline is April 1st. 
  10. ERICA STARR MEMORIAL THEATER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $3,000 per year.  Recipient must be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in theater and showing an interest in the technical side of theatre, (lighting, costumes, scenery), and demonstrate some financial need.  GPA of 2.00 is required. 
  11. CHARLES A. SCHMIDT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per year, given to a continuing Theatre major who maintains a 3.0 GPA, demonstrates good citizenship and financial need.
  12. BILL & ANN STOKES SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of scholarship varies per year; Recipients must be full-time sophomore, junior or senior students, majoring in Theatre and Musical Theatre, demonstrate financial need, and be a student in good standing in the theatre department. 3.0 GPA; Application deadline March 15th.
  13. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CONTINUING DRAMA MAJORS: Available through the Theatre Program and Alpha Psi Omega. Number and amount of scholarships fluctuate. Theatre Program awards are based on grades, talent and need. Alpha Psi Omega awards are based on talent, participation in the department, citizenship, and need.
  14. SCHOLARSHIPS OF INCOMING THEATRE MAJORS: $1000 awarded to incoming transfer and freshmen theatre majors each fall. New students apply by audition, letters of recommendation, and interviews.
  15. SHSU DANCE AND THEATRE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,500 per year.  Recipients must be full-time students in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in dance or theatre, be interviewed by the selection committee to discuss his or her educational goals, and demonstrate financial need. GPA requirement is 3.0.  Application deadline is April 1st.
  16. THELMA JEAN BARNES TOWNLEY SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be an outstanding full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing, majoring in any program within the Department of Theatre and Dance; demonstrate he/she holds the values and character traits of the honoree, Mrs. Townley, integrity, character, and strong values, and has an ability to achieve their full potential in theatre or dance.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is April 15th.
  17. SOFIA VICTORIA MENDEZ PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline within the performing arts; demonstrate financial need; and demonstrate a high level of skill in their major.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.
  18. KATHERINE AND GLENN PAYNE THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 minimum, to a full-time undergraduate student in good standing; majoring in Theatre, not to include Musical Theatre; have a strong interest in non-musical acting and directing; maintain over GPA of 2.5 Financial Aid will be considered but not a determining factor. Application deadline is April 15th.
  19. NANCY GAERTNER PERFORMING ARTS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate in good standing and majoring in any program within the Department of Theatre and Dance and/or the School of Music.
  20. MARY S. AND G. SCOTT McCARLEY PERFORMING ARTS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing; majoring in dance, music, music therapy, theatre, or musical theatre.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st. 
  21. ETHEL NICHOLSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF JAMES D. BOZEMAN, JR.:  $1000 per year; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing and majoring in Musical Theatre; minimum 3.0 GPA.

DEPARTMENT OF DANCE

  1. CHI TAU EPSILON SCHOLARSHIP:Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior student by fall, maintain an overall GPA of 3.0, be an active member in good standing of Chi Tau Epsilon, complete the application for "Dances @ 8" and submit a list of community service hours, attend pre-showings for "Dances @ 8", choreograph a piece for "Dances @ 8". Application deadline will be 2 weeks prior to the show. Interested individuals request application.
  2. KELLEY BARBER ENDOWED DANCE PERFORMANCE SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in Dance. GPA requirement is 2.5.
  3. LEASURE-MCDONALD'S SCHOLARSHIP: Amounts vary. Dance Majors apply to the Dance faculty.
  4. MONTAGUE DANCE SCHOLARSHIP: $200 and up per semester. Recipient must be a continuing Dance Major. Given to classifications of junior, senior, or graduate standing. Must maintain a 3.0 overall GPA.
  5. DANCE EXCELLENCE AWARD: Amounts vary. Covers one year. Recipient must be a continuous Dance Major who has made exemplary contributions to dance, while maintaining a 3.0 overall GPA.
  6. UNDERGRADUATE PERFORMANCE SCHOLARSHIPS: $500 one term, $1000 per year. Recipient must be a Dance Major and have an overall 2.8 GPA. Also, he/she must exhibit through audition excellent performance skills and fulfill performance responsibilities as assigned.
  7. SHSU DANCE AND THEATRE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,500 per year.  Recipients must be full-time students in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in dance or theatre, be interviewed by the selection committee to discuss his or her educational goals, and demonstrate financial need. GPA requirement is 3.0.  Application deadline is April 1st.
  8. MARY S. AND G. SCOTT McCARLEY PERFORMING ARTS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing; majoring in dance, music, music therapy, theatre, or musical theatre.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st. 
  9. SOFIA VICTORIA MENDEZ PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline within the performing arts; demonstrate financial need; and demonstrate a high level of skill in their major.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.
  10. NANCY GAERTNER PERFORMING ARTS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate in good standing and majoring in any program within the Department of Theatre and Dance and/or the School of Music.
  11. THELMA JEAN BARNES TOWNLEY SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be an outstanding full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing, majoring in any program within the Department of Theatre and Dance; demonstrate he/she holds the values and character traits of the honoree, Mrs. Townley, integrity, character, and strong values, and has an ability to achieve their full potential in theatre or dance.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is April 15th.

CHARLES MOSER/BRENHAM BANNER-PRESS ENDOWED JOURNALISM FUND: The following criteria will be used on the selection process: A recipient must (1) be enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in journalism; (2) submit a 500-word essay on why he/she chose the major of journalism; (3) demonstrate financial need; and (4) maintain satisfactory academic progress as determined by The Department of Public Communication and its scholarship committee.   4. CHERYL PARISH AWARDS: Awards are given to outstanding female journalism majors and are based on scholastic achievement, personality, and promise as a journalist. These scholars must have at least a sophomore standing. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)

FEROL ROBINSON ENDOWMENT FOR TOMORROW'S JOURNALISTS: The following criteria will be used in the selection process: A recipient must (1) be full-time SHSU student, majoring in journalism; (2) submit a 500-word essay on his/her professional journalism goals and need for financial assistance; (3) represent the qualities of Dr. Robinson and show potential in journalism; and (4) maintain an overall GPA of 3.0. Recipients who re-apply in succeeding years submit an essay on what they have gained from the previous year's instruction. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  10. DR. FEROL ROBINSON JOURNALISM ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU majoring in journalism. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. GPA requirement 3.0. Application deadline March 1.
  11. FRESHMAN ALUMNI ANGEL SCHOLARSHIP: $250 for fall tuition only. Receipt must be an official degree plan RTV (BFA/BA) major. Recipient must have also completed 12-32 hours (Freshman status), 3.0 overall GPA, and 3.0 overall RTV GPA. Qualified candidates will submit a resume (including high school information and/or NBS involvement), a typed essay, official transcript, and a typed application form.(Application deadline: APRIL 8)
  12. JERRY TALLANT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship will be available between Spring 2003 and Fall 2006 only. Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student majoring in Journalism at Sam Houston State University and who demonstrates financial need. Student must meet SHSU's normal enrollment standards and maintain satisfactory academic progress. (Deadline for application submission is March 1)
  13. KAILAS AND BECKY RAO SCHOLARSHIP in HONOR of DR. FEROL ROBINSON: recipient must (1) be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU, majoring in journalism; (2) maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 or, if a freshman student, have an overall high school GPA of 3.0; (3) provide evidence of involvement in community service; (4) have a clear criminal record; and (5) demonstrate personal integrity. If a student who meets all the selection criteria demonstrates financial need, that student will receive priority in the selection process. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  14. HAL FULGHAM SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded each year to a photography major. The recipient is the winner of "BEST PORTFOLIO" at the SHSU Photographic Society's Annual Statewide High School Photo Contest. The winner receives approximately $200. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  15. JOHN A. ELMORE, JR. SCHOLARSHIPS: Awarded to outstanding students majoring in journalism who have consistently maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average during their freshman year at SHSU. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  16. JOHN W. SPONBERG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS: Awarded to outstanding students majoring in journalism who have consistently maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average during their freshman year at SHSU. (Application deadline: MAY 1)
  17. JOURNALISM ADVISORY COUNCIL INTERNSHIP FUND SCHOLARSHIP: A selection committee consisting of the Coordinator of the Journalism Program and the Chair of the Department of Public Communication shall select the recipients of the award each semester. The following criteria will be used in the selection process: A recipient must (1) be enrolled at SHSU, majoring in journalism; (2) have been selected to pursue an internship, and (3) have registered for JRN 498, Journalism Internship. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  18. JOURNALISM AWARDS: This annual competition is open to journalism majors and minors. Judging is by practicing professionals in the area of the award. (Application deadline: April 1)
     
    • FEATURE STORY: Byline feature story of any length, with/without photos. Judges look for lively, well-constructed stories with strong reader appeal.
    • NEWS STORY:Bylined news story of any length, with/without photos. Judges will look for excellence in reporting, clarity in style and accuracy.

     

    • SPORTS WRITING: Byline sports story of any length, with/without photos. Judges will look for excellence in content, style, and background information.

     

    • PHOTOS:Individual news, sports or feature photos that accompanied a story or ran alone with a cut line or as part of a photo essay. Judges will consider composition, cropping, and print quality.

     

    • ADVERTISING: A product, service, or house ad written and produced in-house by one student (use of clip art is permissible). Judges will base their decision on excellence in copy writing, layout illustration and overall appeal.
     
  19. JUNIOR ALUMNI ANGEL SCHOLARSHIP: $250 for Fall tuition only. Receipt must be an official degree plan RTV (BFA/BA) major. Recipient must have also completed 65-96 hours (Junior status), 3.0 overall GPA, and 3.0 overall RTV GPA. Qualified candidates will submit a resume (including NBS, KSHU/CABLE 7 & internship involvement), a typed essay, official transcript, and a typed application form.(Application deadline: APRIL 1)
  20. KELLY EDGAR McADAMS & INA MAY OGLETREE McADAMS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies, must be senior students at SHSU, majoring in Journalism; meet all standard entrance requirements and maintain satisfactory academic progress; must have financial need. Applicants should submit applications during their junior year to receive awards when they are seniors. Scholarship(s) will be awarded each year, from interest earnings on the endowment. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  21. MARY McASHAN GIBBS SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded to female journalism majors who are candidates for bachelor degrees at SHSU. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA overall and must have earned at the time of selection 50 semester credit hours, but no more than 100 semester credit hours. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  22. MORRIS FRANK/DAN RATHER B.J. SCHOLARSHIP: $500 for tuition purposes. Award to Outstanding BFA Broadcast Journalism Major. Recipient should have completed or is currently enrolled in RTV 374 -- Broadcast Journalism I. Also, recipient should have a 2.5 overall GPA, 3.0 overall RTV GPA, and have on file an official RTV (BFA in Broadcast Journalism) degree plan. Candidates should submit an official transcript, resume, typed essay (plus a separate sheet describing YOUR reason to pursue a career in broadcast journalism and why you are deserving of this prestigious scholarship), and a typed application form. (Application deadline: APRIL 8)
  23. NATIONAL BROADCASTING SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP: $250 tuition scholarship for outstanding Freshman/Sophomore and Junior/Senior NBS Member. Freshman/Sophomore should have completed 12 hours and above at SHSU. Juniors/Seniors should have 60 hours & above completed SHSU hours (Aug./Dec. 1998 graduates only). Additional requirements are 2.5 overall GPA, 3.0 overall RTV GPA, and have on file an official degree plan declaring RTV (BFA/BA) major. Candidates should submit an official transcript, resume, typed essay (plus a separate page describing your participation in & contribution to BS), and typed application form. (Application deadline: APRIL 1)

  25. OMAR JON SANCHEZ MEMORIAL PRODUCTION SCHOLARSHIP: $250 for tuition purposes. Award is for Outstanding Potential in RTV Production. Recipient must have 45 hours+ completed, 2.5 overall GPA, 3.0 overall RTV GPA, an official RTV (BFA/BA) major --with degree plan on file. Candidates should submit an official transcript, resume, typed essay, typed application form, and production portfolio (Videotape or Audio tape of project samples completed by applicant. (Application deadline: APRIL 8)
  26. OUTSTANDING JOURNALISM STUDENT AWARD: Given to a journalism major who is currently classified as a junior or senior. Criteria are: academic achievement, journalism achievement through department publications, campus activities, recognition for department (internships, awards, positive attitude), and service to other journalism students, in a leadership role. (Application deadline: APRIL 1)
  27. HOUSTONIAN STAFF SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is for student members of the Houstonian staff. It requires a commitment to continue working on staff. It is awarded based on financial need, contributions to the student newspaper and a grade point average of 2.5. (Application deadline is April 15 for the following year and November 15 for the spring semester.)
  28. DON AND FRANCES REID JOURNALISM ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU and majoring in Mass Communication with an emphasis in Print Journalism.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is March 10th.
  29. LIMELIGHT FILMS SCHOLARSHIP:  Recipient must be a full-time junior or senior in good standing; major in Mass Communications activities; show a strong broadcast production or film production; demonstrate involvement in Mass Communication activities; show a strong passion for their major and are driven in the pursuit of a career in film or television, and go the extra mile in and outside the classroom, and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. 

NOTE: In the past, these awards have been funded through the Journalism Advisory Council.  
 

 

  1. ROY CLARK SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a Journalism major and classified as a junior or senior, must demonstrate a commitment to a career in journalism. (Application deadline: MARCH 1)
  2. SENIOR ALUMNI ANGEL SCHOLARSHIP: $100 tuition scholarship for summer GRAD or $250 Fall Tuition Scholarship for December Graduate. Receipt must have 97 hours /above completed, a 3.0 overall GPA (3.0 overall RTV GPA), and has filed an official degree plan (indicating a RTV (BFA/BA) major). Qualified candidates will submit a resume (including NBS, KSHU/CABLE 7, Station Management, and internship involvement), a typed essay, official transcript, and a typed application form. (Application deadline: APRIL 8) 
  3. SOPHOMORE ALUMNI ANGEL SCHOLARSHIP: $250 Fall Tuition Scholarship. Receipt must have 33-64 hours /above completed, a 3.0 overall GPA (3.0 overall RTV GPA), and has filed an official degree plan indicating a RTV (BFA/BA) major). Qualified candidates will submit a (n) resume (including NBS and KSHU/CABLE 7 involvement), official transcript, and typed application form. (Application deadline: APRIL 8)
  4. THE MADISON WOLFE PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOLARSHIP FUND: The following criteria will be used in the selection process: A recipient must (1) be sophomore level/above; (2) have completed at least 6 photography hours in residence at SHSU; (3) appreciate and respect photography, whether or not that is his/her final career choice; (4) maintain an overall GPA of 2.5; and, (5) upon accepting the scholarship, students agree to submit at the end of each semester a one-page essay (100 words/more) relating to their academic growth and respect for photography. Nothing in this agreement shall preclude a student from receiving the scholarship more than once if the student meets and maintains these standards and requirements. (Application deadline April 1)
  5. MARIE L. UNDERWOOD ENDOWMENT: Recipient must be an undergraduate student in good standing enrolled in a minimum of nine credit hours at SHSU, majoring in Communication Studies, demonstrate financial need; be a sophomore or above with a minimum of 32 earned credits and demonstrate active involvement in on-campus and off-compus community activities.
