ScholarX Scholarship Application

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS:

The following scholarships are awarded in the spring, through the Division of Academic Affairs, for the next academic year:

  1. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS GENERATIONS SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline; be (a) a natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a currently employed staff member from the non-college Division of Academic Affairs or (b) a natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a retired staff member of the non-college Division of Academic Affairs, with a retirement date on or after December 31, 2008; demonstrate financial need by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); and be employed full-time or part-time, and/or involved in community service, and/or be active in an on-campus organization.  GPA of 2.50 is required. 
  2. AMATO BROTHERS SCHOLARSHIP: $3,000 per year; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, majoring in any discipline, demonstrate financial need, and exhibit commitment to continue and complete their education. The recipient must maintain not less than a 2.5 GPA in major and overall.
  3. ARLEIGH B. TEMPLETON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipients must be full or part-time undergraduate or graduate students majoring in any discipline within the College of Education.  Job Corps graduates have priority.  GPA of 3.50 is required. 
  4. BAPTIST WOMEN'S CECIL M. & DOROTHY ANN DIXON JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount to be determined by the selection committee. Recipient must be a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Huntsville,TX; have applied for admission and been accepted, or be enrolled as a full-time student at SHSU, majoring in any discipline; maintain an overall GPA of 2.5. Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor in the selection process.
  5. BELLE CLAYTON ATKEISSON SCHOLARSHIP: $125 per semester, two consecutive semesters of the freshman year.
  6. BRUCE/HILLEGEIST ENDOWMENT FUND: $2,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time student in good standing and majoring in any discipline; demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 3.00 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.   7. BYRD FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF SHSU RODEO ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000./year, recipient must be full-time undergraduate students majoring in any discipline, be accepted into the Rodeo Program, and meet NIRA eligibility. Required grade point average is 2.0. Deadline date for application submission is March 20th.
  8. CLAUDE H. & ALICE M. TOWNSEND FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP: $625 per semester for two semesters to a beginning freshman. Recipients must: have been in the upper 20 percent of their high school graduating class; score not less than 1200 (critical reading + math) on the SAT I or 27 on the ACT; and demonstrate financial need. Scholarship may be renewed annually for three additional years, based upon availability of funds and not less than a 3.0 GPA at SHSU.
  9. DAN RATHER AND JEAN RATHER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $3,000 per year.  Recipients must be incoming undergraduate, first-time freshman students majoring in any discipline, demonstrate financial need, have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
  10. DELLA MCKENZIE BLACKMON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $100 per semester, two consecutive semesters of the freshman year.
  11. ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT GENERATIONS SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student, in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, be a (a) natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a currently employed staff member from the University's Enrollment Management Division; or (b) natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of a retired staff member of the University's Enrollment Management Division, with a retirement date on or after December 31, 2007; demonstrate financial need by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and be employed full-time or part-time, and/or involved in community service, and be active in an on-campus organization.  GPA requirement is 2.50.
  12. FANNIE ROBINSON TYSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $250.00 per semester for the next two semesters. Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student in good standing enrolled at SHSU, demonstrate financial need, have achieved an overall high school GPA of 3.0, maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 at SHSU and have graduated from Coldspring-Oakhurst High School in San Jacinto County, Texas.
  13. FITZ FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for the next two semesters following the date of the award. SHSU recipients must have not less than a 3.0 GPA. High school applicants must meet the same requirements as those for University Scholars; all applicants must demonstrate financial need.
  14. GLENDA DAWSON EDUCATIONAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, majoring in any discipline.  Financial need is a consideration. 
  15. GREATER TEXAS FOUNDATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year. Recipient must be; an entering freshman student in good standing enrolled at SHSU majoring in any discipline; demonstrate financial need; and must maintain an overall GPA of 2.8.
  16. HARMON LOWMAN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters of the freshman year. Recipients must be in the upper 20 percent of their graduating class and score not less than 1200 (critical reading + math) on the SAT I or 27 on the ACT.
  17. HERRINGTON VETERANS SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per year. Scholarship awarded to a married undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University. Student must be a US Army veteran who has served in a foreign conflict at least 6 months and has an honorable discharge. Financial need is a consideration in the selection of a recipient, but not a determining factor. GPA of at least 2.8 is required.
  18. H.H. "TUBBY" AND NUNA SANDEL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $2000 per semester. The recipient must: have graduated from a Walker County high school; be a full-time incoming freshman student enrolled at SHSU; majoring in any discipline; demonstrate financial need; have a minimum SAT score of 1050 or a minimum ACT score of 23. The recipient must maintain at least an overall 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to students majoring in math or science, but is not limited to those majors.
  19. HOUSTON AND ROBBIE McCARLEY COMMUNITY SERVICE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU, majoring in any discipline, have a minimum of 20 hours of documented community service within the last year and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.00 is required.
  20. HUNTSVILLE LION'S CLUB ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Awarded to a Huntsville High School senior who has been accepted and plans to attend SHSU, majoring in any discipline.
  21. HUNTSVILLE STUDY CLUB: Scholarship amount will be determined annually according to endowment earnings. This scholarship will be awarded for two semesters of the freshman year to a female graduating senior from Huntsville High School majoring in any discipline. The recipient is required to be a full-time SHSU student maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Applicants will need to submit a 250 word statement of life goals.
  22. JAMES W. WALSTEAD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $2500 per semester. Scholarship was established in memory of the donor's son, an SHSU graduate. Scholarship is to be awarded to a freshman student who has been a resident of the state of Texas for at least one year. This is a four-year award, continuation dependent upon maintaining a GPA of 3.25. The recipient must have a record of extracurricular activities and leadership (sports not to be overweighed when compared to other activities). The student must demonstrate financial need.
  23. JESSE NEWELL & THOMAS SEARS MONTGOMERY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of award is determined by accrued interest. Recipient must: demonstrate financial need; meet normal SHSU entrance requirement; and be enrolled as full-time student at SHSU; and maintain an overall GPA of not less than 2.5.
  24. JUANITA BROWN THREADGILL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1,500 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, have taken time between high school and starting college (minimum of six months) or be returning to college (after a minimum of six months out of college) to finish a degree or to get another degree.  Preference will be given to single parents.  Recipients will continue to receive this award for a second year as long as they are students at SHSU and continue to meet the selection criteria.  They must submit a one page essay on their future plans and how the scholarship has affected them.  Recipients may receive the scholarship for a third year if they write an essay demonstrating that they are under particular hardship and deserve to receive the scholarship another year.  GPA of 2.8 is required. 
  25. JUDGE & MRS. JAMES A ELKINS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree. The recipient must be an incoming freshman majoring in any discipline, but must; graduate in the upper ten percent of his/her high school graduating class; have an ACT score of not less than 30 or an SAT score of not less than 1340 (critical reading + math); and be enrolled full-time and maintain an overall GPA of 3.25.
  26. MINNIE JANE THREADGILL HEINS SCHOLARSHIP: $250 per semester, two consecutive semesters of the freshman year.
  27. PHI BETA SIGMA FRATRNITY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student, enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, of minority descent, provide evidence of a minimum of 20 hours of community service within the last year, provide three letters of recommendation from teachers or community leaders, and provide a one-page letter expressing goals and aspirations.  No GPA requirement.
  28. FACILITIES MANAGEMENT FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester. Recipients must a full-time undergraduate student with more consideration given to upperclassmen; in good standing' majoring in any discipline' be a natural, step or adopted child or grandchild of a currently employed SHSU Facilities Management staff member; maintain minimum overall GPA of 2.5 with more consideration given to those applicants with the higher GPA. If incoming freshman, must meet or exceed the minimum SAT or ACT score required. In the event of two equal candidates, financial need will be considered. GPA of 2.50 is required. Application deadline is Feb. 1st.
  29. BOBBY KEES & COLLEEN ANN MARKS PRESIDENTIAL ENDOWMENT FUND: $1000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree. The recipient must be an incoming freshman majoring in any discipline, but must: graduate in the upper ten percent of his/her high school graduating class; have an ACT score of not less than 30 or an SAT score of not less than 1340 (critical reading + math); maintain an overall GPA of 3.25; and be enrolled full-time and in good standing at Sam Houston State University. 
  30. MARY BUSH SMITHER PRESIDENT'S ENDOWMENT: $1000 per semester.  Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in any discipline; be in the upper 10 percent of their high school graduating class and score not less than 1340 (critical reading and math) on the SAT I or 30 on the ACT; and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.00.   For additional information contact the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office; 936-294-1774.
  31. PAULINE BUTLER AKER PRESIDENT'S ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree. Recipients may major in any discipline, but must: be in the upper 10 percent of their high school class; score not less than 1340 (critical reading +math) on the SAT I or 30 on the ACT; and be classified as a beginning freshman.
  32. THOMAS CLIFTON GIBBS & JAMESETTE HUNT PRESIDENT'S ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree as a business major. Recipient must: be in the upper 10 percent of their high school graduating class; score not less than 1340 (critical reading + math) on the SAT I or 30 on the ACT; and be classified as a beginning freshman.
  33. RAVEN/KAPPA ALPHA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The amount of the scholarship varies per semester. Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students (minimum of 12 hours, first time or repeat hours), active member of Gamma Tau chapter of Kappa Alpha Order, in good standing with the university, the fraternity and the National Office of Kappa Alpha Order and of good character to reflect positively on the Chapter. GPA requirement is 3.0 in previous long semester.
  34. ROBYN LEIGH BARRUM MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester for two semesters of the freshman year. Recipients must: be a graduate of Huntsville High School who has applied for admission and been accepted as a full-time student at SHSU, majoring in any discipline; maintain not less than a 2.0 GPA; and demonstrate financial need.
  35. STATE FARM FRIENDS OF SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIV. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 per year.  Recipients must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing and majoring in any discipline; demonstrate strong financial need. GPA of 2.00 is required.  Application deadline is February 15.
  36. SWEET CARPENTER PRESIDENTIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per semester.  Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in any discipline and be a graduate of a high school in Trinity Texas.  If, in any one year, there are no qualified applicants from a high school in Trinity Texas, the scholarship may be awarded to a qualified incoming freshman student from any high school in East Texas.  Financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor.  This is a four-year award as long as the recipient continues to meet all of the selection criteria.  GPA of 3.00 is required.
  37. THE UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Is a competitive scholarship awarded to entering freshmen, Sam Houston State University undergraduate and transfer students whose academic accomplishments and university or community citizenship are excellent in every respect. This competitive scholarship is intended for a full time student enrolled as a resident, nonresidents or a citizen of a country other than the United States of America, maintaining not less than a 3.25 GPA. The award amount is determined on the availability of funds
  38. TOMLINSON-LEDBETTER SCHOLARSHIP: $300 per semester, eight consecutive semesters beginning with the freshman year.
  39. UNIVERSITY SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIPS: $500 per semester for two semesters. Awarded to beginning freshmen. Recipients must be in the upper 20 percent of their high school graduating class and score not less than 1200 (critical reading + math) on the SAT I or 27 on the ACT.
  40. VIVIAN REID MEHR SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per semester; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled at SHSU and majoring in any discipline; entering or returning to college after raising a family or planning a second career. 3.0 GPA requirement. Application deadline is March 1.
  41. LORETTA J. HANKINS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate in good standing and majoring in any discipline within the College of Business Administration; demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.50 is required. 
  42. BEESON SCHOLARSHIP: $3,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing; majoring in industrial technology or majoring in any discipline within the College of Business Administration; and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.
  43. J. B. AND KATHRYN SALLAS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 minimum per year.  Recipient must be a full-time or part-time (minimum of 9 hours) undergraduate or graduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline; be a graduate of a Houston County high school (Crockett, Lovelady, Latexo, Grapeland, or Kennard); and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.75 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st. 
  44. FORMER FOSTER YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time or part-time (minimum of 9 credit hours per semester) undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline, demonstrate financial need, and must be a former foster youth, orphan, or ward of the state.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is February 15th.
  45. BARACHEL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate in good standing and majoring in any discipline; be proficient in a second language; travel internationally for summer internship arranged by the Donor; attend monthly intern meetings; and prepare for an international assignment outside of the United States upon graduation. GPA of 2.50 is required. This scholarship does NOT have an application deadline.  For additional information, please contact the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office; 936-294-1774.
  46. JOHN C. AND WILMA MCADAMS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time student in good standing, majoring in any discipline; demonstrate financial aid.  GPA of 2.00 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.  For additional information, contact the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office; 936-294-1774.
  47. L.B. AND RAGNA LYNN BILLINGSLEY SCHOLARSHIP:  $2,500 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing; major or minor in any discipline; be a citizen of the United States; and be a resident of Texas.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is February 1st.
  48. BENTWATER® SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a current employee of Bentwater®, Bentwater® employee's spouse, legal dependent, child or grandchild; have a high school degree, be a full-time or part-time graduate or undergraduate student (incoming Freshmen and transfer students included) in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University or Lone Star College System majoring in any discipline; enrolled in a minimum of six hours per semester.  Co-curricular activities, work experience, community service, and financial needs in addition to scholastic record will be considered.  GPA of 2.50 required.  Application deadline is February 1st.
  49. ROSSER FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $3000 per year.  Recipient must be first-time incoming freshman in good standing; major in any discipline within the College of Business or the College of Education; be accepted to and maintain enrollment in the Elliott T. Bowers Honors College; have a minimum high school cumulative GPA of at least 3.40; have an SAT1 composite score of 1200 or above and/or an ACT composite of at least 27; or must have graduated in the top 10% of their high school class; maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 during both semesters of their freshman year and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.25 thereafter (sophomore, junior, senior years).  Application deadline is February 1.
  50. DOROTHY COWART ROBERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. Donor will reward one annual scholarship of $1,000 to a full-time, undergraduate student in good standing majoring in any discipline; who must be a natural, step, adopted child or grandchild of a retired faculty or staff member of SHSU, with a retirement date on or after December 31, 2012; maintain a 2.5 GPA, have completed a Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with a score of between 5,000 and 10,000, be employed full-time or part-time, and/or be involved in community service, and/or be active in on-campus organizations.
  51. JIM STEVENS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:$1,000 per year. Recipient must be a part or full-time undergraduate, graduate or doctoral student, majoring in any discipline and be employed by Computer Services Department for at least the last six months. Financial need is a consideration. GPA requirement is 2.80. Application submission deadline is Feb. 15.  
  52. JOHN P. HUGHES MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time student of any classification; majoring in any discipline; must demonstrate financial need; have had challenges in their life and overcome adversity; and maintain an overall GPA of 2.5.  *Overcoming adversities will take priority over financial need.*
  53. OAK WOOD LODGE 1444, ANCIENT FREE AND ACCEPTED MASONS SCHOLARSHIP:  $1000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time student in good standing; major in any discipline; maintain an overall GPA of 2.50; must have a living or deceased father, step father, grandfather, brother, or uncle who is a good standing member of the Freemasonry; recipients can be natural, adopted, or foster child of freemasonry member.

COLLEGE OF SCIENCES

  1. GLYN AND MARTHA GILLIAM SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in agriculture business or agriculture education; demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is April 1st.  For additional information, contact Dwayne Pavelock, agr_dxp@shsu.edu.
  2. COLLEGE FARM BOYS SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing and majoring in any agricultural program.  GPA of 2.50 is required.  Application deadline is April 1st.  For additional information, contact Dwayne Pavelock, agr_dxp@shsu.edu
  3. ARTHUR LYNN TALK, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $500-1000/year, approximately five scholarships awarded, 2.75 GPA, major in a field of agriculture. Selection based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  4. HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO ENDOWED SCHOLASHIP: $500-2000/year, awards to incoming freshmen, awards to junior college transfer students, awards to currently enrolled agriculture majors (number of awards may vary), 2.75 GPA, major in a field of agriculture. Selection criteria same as Talk scholarship.
  5. SAN ANTONIO LIVESTOCK EXPOSITION SCHOLARSHIP: $10,000/4 years, awards to incoming freshman only, two awards given annually, major in a field of agriculture, 12 credit hours per semester minimum, 3.0 GPA, Texas residents only. Must comply with S.A.L.E. requirements.
  6. JAMES MARCUS SMITH ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: $500-1000/year, 2.75 GPA, Animal Husbandry/Animal Science majors, selection based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  7. WILSON-WARNER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1000-3000/year, 3.5 GPA, major in field of agriculture, other selection criteria based on academic record, extra-curricular activities, and leadership.
  8. WILLIE FRANK HALL TRUST SCHOLARSHIP: $1000-1500/year, two awards (may vary), 2.75 GPA, graduated in upper half of high school class, major in agricultural sciences seeking teacher certification, other selection criteria same as previous scholarship.
  9. CLEMON AND CAROLYN MONTGOMERY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $500/year, one award, 2.75 GPA, major in agricultural sciences, selection based on demonstrated financial need.
  10. ANN CRUMP AND CHARLES T. MALLERY AGRIBUSINESS UNDERGRUATE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies annually, and recipient must have a 3.0 GPA. Recipient must be a full-time entering freshman student, majoring in Agribusiness, demonstrate financial need, be a high performing high school student with demonstrated involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service, and be a natural born citizen of the United States.
  11. MYRON A. BALCOM INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies annually. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in industrial Technology; 3.0 GPA required; Deadline date for application submission is March 15th.
  12. BYRD FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF SHSU RODEO ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000./year, recipient must be full-time undergraduate students majoring in any discipline, be accepted into the Rodeo Program, and meet NIRA eligibility.   13. McCAFFETY ELECTRIC  COMPANY, INC. AGRICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL SCIENCES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.   14. TEXAS BEST RODEO PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP: $1,500 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in any discipline; be accepted into the Rodeo Program; meet NIRA eligibility; and demonstrate financial need.  GPA of 2.25 is required.  Deadline date for application submission is July 1st.  For additional information contact the Agricultural Department; email: sfkelley@shsu.edu

  1. GEORGE J. BETO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP . The George J. Beto Memorial Scholarship is available to an international student or a member of a minority group (including women), who has demonstrated financial need and has satisfactorily met the standard entrance requirements established by the University. The student must be enrolled as a full-time criminal justice student at Sam Houston State University . Preference is given to especially needy students from lower-income families. Special consideration will be given to "first generation" college students. Preference will be given to undergraduate students, although graduate students will not be precluded. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  2. JAMES C. BOSWELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP . The James C. Boswell Scholarship may be granted for the fall and spring semesters to deserving undergraduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University who have demonstrated financial need and who are seeking to pursue a degree in law enforcement or affiliated criminal justice disciplines. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  3. JOHN R. BRANIFF SCHOLARSHIP: Amount of scholarship varies per year; Recipients must be an undergraduate student majoring in careers in the field of law enforcement. Preference will be give to those students who are residents of Austin, Brazos, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Liberty, Madison, Montgomery, Walker, Waller and Washington Counties.   4. TOM BROUSSARD, PH.D. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP . The Thomas Broussard Ph.D. Memorial Scholarship may be granted for the fall and spring semesters to academically deserving undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University . Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  5. SARAH JANINE CLEARY AND MICHAEL GRIFFIN CLEARY SCHOLARSHIP . The Sarah Janine Cleary and Michael Griffin Cleary Scholarship is available to an undergraduate student who is majoring in criminal justice, who has demonstrated financial need and has satisfactorily met the standard entrance requirements established by the university. DIANE COCHRAN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be an undergraduate or graduate student in good standing at SHSU entering an internship at a Criminal Justice agency, having completed two long semesters at SHSU. Applicants must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Coordinator of the Criminal Justice Internship Program and the College of Criminal Justice Student Development Committee. CLAY DYER CRIMINAL JUSTICE UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP: The Clay Dyer Criminal Justice Undergraduate Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to determined Pottsboro High School or Grayson County Community College students who desire to pursue higher education in criminal justice at Sam Houston State University . Recipient must have applied for and been admitted as an undergraduate criminal justice major of Sam Houston State University , and must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
  9. CHARLES M. FRIEL SCHOLARSHIP, VICTOR G. STRECHER SCHOLARSHIP, GEORGE G. AND GRACE KILLINGER SCHOLARSHIP, AND MARGARET FARNWORTH SCHOLARSHIP: These scholarships are granted for the fall and spring semesters to academically deserving undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University . Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.

JARED GRANT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: The Jared Grant Memorial Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to an undergraduate student in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University and employed by the Criminal Justice Center . Students must maintain a grade point average of 2.5.
  11. KELLY HARRIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AND WAYLAND D. PILCHER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: These scholarships are granted for the fall and spring semesters to academically deserving undergraduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University . Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.
  12. LT. C.E. JORDAN, SR. SCHOLARSHIP: The Lt. C.E. Jordan, Sr. Scholarship may be granted for the fall and spring semesters only, to male or female criminal justice majors enrolled as an undergraduate at Sam Houston State University . Students receiving the scholarships must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average in his/her studies, and must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours at Sam Houston State University, unless employed full time as a peace officer, in which case he/she must be enrolled in at least 9 semester hours. Other requirements of the scholarship are that the recipient be: (1) a United States Citizen and permanent resident of Texas; (2) a son, daughter, or legal ward of any peace officer or individual employed in areas related to or affiliated with the criminal justice field; (3) under 25 years of age, unless employed full time as a police officer, in which case the age limit is waived.
  13. MERLYN D. MOORE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be an entering freshman or a current full-time student enrolled at SHSU and majoring in Criminal Justice; demonstrate financial need; and demonstrate a strong academic background. Preference will be given to those students who are actively participating in any Criminal Justice organization. Application deadline Feb. 14.
  14. JUSTIN PERDUE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be an undergraduate student majoring in criminal justice at SHSU. GPA requirement 2.5. Application deadline Feb. 14.
  15. JASON W. STACHEY CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in Criminal Justice and demonstrate financial need. Entering freshmen must meet the minimum SAT/ACT score for undergraduate admissions. GPA requirement is 3.0
  16. TARGET SCHOLARSHIP OF EXCELLENCE: The Target Scholarship of Excellence will be awarded to three (3) students. One award will be given to a freshman who will be classified as a sophomore for the following academic year; another award will be given to a sophomore who will be classified as a junior the following academic year; another award will be given to a junior who will be classified as a senior the following academic year. The recipient must (1) be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in Criminal Justice; and (2) maintain an overall GPA of 3.0. Applicants will also be asked to provide a written response to one question agreed upon by the scholarship selection committee and the Donor representatives.

  16. SOUTHLAND SCHOLARS PROGRAM: This award of $1000/year is intended for a beginning freshman student who will be seeking to become a certified teacher. The student must have a 1200 SAT score and be in the top quarter of the high school graduating class. The student may continue to receive the scholarship for four years if the student maintains at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.

ERICA STARR MEMORIAL THEATER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP:  $3,000 per year.  Recipient must be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in theater and showing an interest in the technical side of theatre, (lighting, costumes, scenery), and demonstrate some financial need.  GPA of 2.00 is required.
  4. ART ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: The Art Endowment Scholarship is awarded annually each spring semester. Students are nominated by faculty members and are then required to submit a portfolio for review by the faculty. Recipients are then selected based on grade point averages overall and in art and on artistic ability. Recipients of this award are also required to have a show exhibited their work during the first summer school semester in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery.
  5. ELKINS LAKE KUNTZ-NELSON MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Elkins Lake Kuntz-Nelson Memorial Art Scholarship Endowment was established in 1988 by the board of Elkins Lake Art League to enable young artists to pursue and encourage excellence in painting. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and paintings submitted for this scholarship may be of any medium. The recipient must maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall and a 3.0 in Art and have at least one full year of studies left to complete at Sam Houston State University.   6. HAL FULGHAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: The Hal Fulgham Memorial Scholarship was established in 1990 in the memory of Hal Fulgham. Recipients of this award must be an entering freshman student at Sam Houston State University majoring in Photography and submit work for review to the Art Department. Recipients must also have been a Texas resident for at least five years. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Art Office.

EDWARD GEESLIN ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Edward Geeslin Art Endowment was established in 1971 by retired professor Edward Davis Geeslin to encourage deserving young men and women of good character who have demonstrated their potential successful achievement as students and are in need of financial assistance. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient.
  8. WELDON HALL JR. SCHOLARSHIP: The Weldon Hall Jr. Endowment in Art was established in 2004 in honor of Weldon Hall Jr. Recipients of this award must be an entering freshman student at Sam Houston State University majoring in Art and submit artwork to the art department for review by the faculty.   9. RUTH WYNNE THOMASON HOLLINSHEAD ENDOWMENT FUND IN ART: The Ruth Wynne Thomason Hollinshead Endowment Fund in Art was established in 2002 in memory of Ruth Wynne Thomason Hollinshead. The recipient of this scholarship must be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in any discipline within the Art Department, demonstrate financial need, and maintain a 3.0 grade point average overall. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient.
  10. JESSE H. JONES AND MARY GIBBS JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: The Jesse H. Jones and Mary Gibbs Jones Endowed Scholarships are awarded to outstanding full-time resident Liberal Arts or Graphic Arts majors who have maintained a 3.0 grade point average at Sam Houston State University. Jesse H. Jones and Mary Gibbs Jones Endowed Scholars will receive $500 per semester for the fall and spring semester following the award.   11. CLEM OTIS MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP: The Clem Otis Memorial Art Scholarship Endowment was established by the Otis family in 1983 in honor of Mrs. Clem Otis. She was an accomplished landscape artist who touched the memories of people across the country with her oils and acrylics. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and paintings submitted for this scholarship must be done in oil. The recipient of this scholarship must have a 2.5 grade point average at Sam Houston State University.
  12. CHARLES PEBWORTH SCULPTURE SCHOLARSHIP: The Charles Pebworth Sculpture Endowment was established in 1993 in honor of Charles Pebworth’s 36 years of dedicated service, to enable young students to pursue their studies in sculpture. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty will provide nominations or students may nominate themselves by submitting a portfolio of sculptural works. The recipient of this scholarship must have a 3.0 grade point average in Art, exhibit outstanding abilities in sculpture and must have one full year of studies left to complete at Sam Houston State University.   13. POLLEY ART AWARDS: The Polley Art Award was established in 1970 by retired professor Joseph Polley Paine to encourage excellence in painting. Mr. Paine placed money from the sale of his paintings into this award fund during the last years of his teaching career and dedicated it to the memory of the Polley family and its Texas pioneer heritage. This scholarship is awarded annually during the spring semester, based on work that was completed during the immediately preceding fall semester painting class.   14. JAMES B. AND MARILYN C. SHEPARD SCHOLARSHIP: The James B. and Marilyn C. Shepard Endowment Fund was established in 1999. This scholarship is awarded annually each spring and faculty members select the recipient. The recipient must be a native born US citizen, be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in Art and maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall. First preference will be for students studying sculpture.
  15. KENNETH ZONKER ENDOWMENT: The Kenneth Zonker Endowment Fund was established in 2003 by the Zonker family in honor of Kenneth Zonker. This scholarship is awarded annually and a committee within the Art Department selects the recipient.   6. MIKE MAHON MEMORIAL RUGBY SCHOLARSHIP:  $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a student in good standing enrolled full-time at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline and have Rugby experience.  GPA of 2.0 is required
  7. CHARLES W. JONES III MEN'S LACROSSE SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline; and be one of the 15 starting members of the Sam Houston State University men's lacrosse team, as determined by the men's lacrosse coach.  GPA of 2.0 is required.  Application deadline is December 1st.
  8. SARAH GALEUCIA WOMEN'S LACROSSE SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, and be one of the starting members of the Sam Houston State University women's lacrosse team, as determined by the women's lacrosse coach.  GPA of 2.0 is required.  Application deadline is March 15th.
  9. SAM HOUSTON MAN'S LACROSSE SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies per year.  Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in any discipline, and be one of the 15 starting members of the Sam Houston State University men's lacrosse team, as determined by the men's lacrosse coach.  GPA of 2.0 is required.  Application deadline is March 15th.
  10. JAY SHEPARD MEMORIAL RUGBY SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate in good standing; major in any discipline incoming freshman must meet University standards of admission with rugby experience. GPA of 2.00 is required. Application deadline is July 15th.
  11. SCOTTY ADLEY MEMORIAL MEN'S LACROSSE SCHOLARSHIP: $500 per year. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline, be from Kingwood, Texas, and be one of the 15 starting members of the Sam Houston State University men's lacrosses team, as determined by the men's lacrosses coach. GPA of 2.00 is required. Application deadline is September 1st.

DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

  1. Sam Houston State University competes at the NCAA Division I level (I-AA in football) in 15 varsity sports. The Bearkats are members of the Southland Conference and have a  tradition of excellence that includes national championships in baseball, golf and softball and NCAA playoff appearances in football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, golf and track and field. The intercollegiate sports in which SHSU fields teams are football, volleyball, men's/women's cross country, men's/women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's/women's golf, women's tennis, and men's/women's indoor/outdoor track and field. Athletic scholarships are offered in all sports.

HONORS PROGRAM

  1. ELLIOTT T. BOWERS SCHOLARSHIP: Available up to four years totaling up to $2800. Any student who has been accepted to the Elliott T. Bowers Honors Program and is currently in good standing within the program is eligible to apply.
  2. RICHARD A. CORDING SCHOLARS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Amount varies. Recipient must be an incoming full-time freshman student, majoring in any discipline, and be accepted as a member of the Elliott T. Bowers Honors Program. Application submission deadline: February 1st
  3. ASSAM SCHOLARSHIP IN HONORS RESEARCH: $500 per year.  Recipient must be on Status One in the Honors College, in good standing and majoring in any discipline; submit a research paper or a poster to the Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium; and continue at SHSU at least one summer session or one long semester after the scholarship award is announced.  If the recipient is graduating at the end of the semester the full $500 may be awarded.  GPA of 3.25 is required.  Application deadline varies.

MILITARY SCIENCE (ROTC)

  1. ARMY RESERVE OFFICER'S TRAINING CORPS (ROTC) SCHOLARSHIPS: Army ROTC scholarships are merit-based and awarded on competitive basis. These scholarships cover all tuition and fees. In addition, each winner receives a flat rate of $450 annually for books. A student will also receive a subsistence allowance of up to $2000 each school year the scholarship is in effect. The period for requesting an application form for a four-year Army ROTC scholarship is from March 1 of a high school student's junior year through November 1 of a student's senior year. If the completed application is post-marked by July 15, the applicant will be considered for an early scholarship. Winners are announced about November 1. Eligibility requirements are:

    A. U.S. citizen
    B. Age 17 before the scholarship is effective.
    C. Taken the SAT or ACT no later than November of the year of application, have a minimum 850 SAT or composite 19 ACT.
    D. Good high school grades.
    E. Participate in leadership, extracurricular, and athletic activities (part-time jobs earn substitute credit).
    F. Under age 27 on June 30 of the expected graduation year (*Qualifying veterans may be granted an extension of up to four years).
    G. High school graduate or have equivalent credit.
    H. Agree to accept a commission in the U.S. Army.
    I. Agree to pursue Army approved academic major.
    J. Meet required physical standards.

  2. SCHUDER'S RANGER COMPANY SCHOLARSHIP: This $20,300 scholarship was created by Raymond Schuder and his wife, Vernon, for needy and deserving students participating in the Ranger Company while attending Sam Houston State University. To be considered as a recipient applicants must satisfy the following criteria: APPLICATION DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 15 & MARCH 30.
     

    A. Demonstrate financial need.
    B. Demonstrate good character.
    C. Maintain good scholarship and excellence, while representing SHSU through participation in the Ranger Company.
     

  3. THE COLONEL JOHN W. THOMASON JR., USMC, MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This $10,000 endowed scholarship was created by the sisters of Colonel Thomason: Mrs. Sue T. Noordberg, Mrs. Emily T. Petersen, and Mrs. Margaret T. Cole. The scholarship includes a saber awarded to the future Bearkat Battalion Commander for the Fall semester. To be considered as a recipient applicants must satisfy the following criteria: 1) Enrolled as a contracted Military Science III Cadet in the necessary to assume command of the BearKat Battalion, and 3) Maintain good scholarship and excellence while representing SHSU through the Army ROTC Program.
  4. TWO OR THREE YEAR RESERVE FORCES DUTY SCHOLARSHIP: Eligibility requirements are the same as the four year scholarship except that applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (at application time and time of receivership). Three year applicants must have a qualifying SAT/ACT score, two year applicants do not require a SAT/ACT score. APPLICATION DEADLINE: CONTACT U.S. ARMY RECRUITER.
  5. JAMES DENNIS BAZAN MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT:  A Military Science student must be enrolled in the Bearkat Battalion the following fall and spring and in good standing at SHSU. Student must maintain an overall 2.25 GPA and demonstrate financial need.
  6. COPELAND MILITARY SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP: Well provide two $250 annual awards each year. Recipient must be minoring in Military Science. 2.5 GPA required. APPLICATION DEADLINE: APRIL 15.
  7. COLONEL WILLIAM JACKSON BYTHE, SR ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: Recipient must be a full-time incoming freshman student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and a member of the ROTC program, demonstrate financial need, have achieved an overall high school GPA of 3.0 and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 at SHSU. APPLICATION DEADLINE: JULY 31ST.
  8. CAPTIAN ROWDY J. INMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. GPA requirement is 2.5. The donars will provide funding for 2 scholarship awards, must be a deserving Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Cadet; exhibit high academic achievement and exemplify the Army values of Loyalty, Duty, respect, and Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and person courage; be a full-time undergraduate in good standing; major in any discipline.

ATHLETICS

  1. RED AND SANDRA McKASKIE MEN'S BASKETBALL ENDOWMENT: $1000 per year. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing; majoring in any discipline maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 and be a student employed as a teaching assistant in the SHSU basketball program.

STUDENT SERVICES

  1. JAY SHEPARD MEMORIAL RUGBY SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 per year. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate in good standing; major in any discipline incoming freshman must meet University standards of admission with rugby experience. GPA of 2.00 is required. Application deadline is July 15th.
  2. SHSU PARENTS' ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT: $1,000 per year. Recipient must be full-time undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in any discipline; with 12 or more credit hours, maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 and have a family member in the SHSU Parents' Association. Financial aid will be considered but not a determining factor.
