The Sam Houston State University (SHSU) College of Criminal Justice 2009 study abroad program to Costa Rica is based on the university signing of a Memorandum agreement between SHSU and UNIBE University, San Jose, Costa Rica. In agreement with Dr. Roberto Rodriguez, UNIBE has agreed to host 15 students for May of 2009, to provide them with an overview of Costa Rican criminal justice, to specifically instruct them on police, courts, and corrections in Costa Rica, to conduct site visits of police departments, courts, and correctional facilities, as well as providing 20 hours of Spanish immersion classes, exposing students to Costa Rican culture, and providing a three-day visit to various Costa Rican museums, landmarks, and natural environments.
The cost of the trip is $1,950, plus students will coordinate with the professor on record for purchasing their airfare, a separate expense, and finally students will register for three hours of Special Topic study and pay the appropriate tuition and fees.
The two week program will include the following:
A. Academic Program:
- 4 visits to Criminal Justice related centers
- 3 lectures by recognized specialist on the field
- room available for Dr. Willard M. Oliver’s classes
B. Spanish Training:
- 2 daily hours of Spanish classes M-F for a program total of 20 hours
C. Home stay:
- Living with a Costa Rican family with private room and bathroom (in some cases
shared with other members of the family), desk, closet, access to internet
- Two big meals (breakfast and dinner) and brown-bag lunch
D. Transportation:
- from and to the international airport
- daily service to and from campus
- visits to criminal justice related sites
E. Tours:
- one three-day two-night trip, including transportation, stay, meals
- Zip line rides through the Rainforest for those wishing to participate
F. Miscellaneous:
- bilingual program assistant
- welcome reception
- medical expenses insurance
