Sam Houston State University (SHSU) is a constantly growing university with dedicated members of the student body, staff and faculty focused on the diversification of our campus. The members of HAVEN take an active role in aiding the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and Queer/Questioning (LGBTIQ) community at SHSU via lectures, workshops, and the promotion of LGBTIQ awareness in a healthful environment for LGBTIQ student life.
Founded in January of 2008, Haven has grown to serve as a solid resource network within the SHSU community for LGBTIQ students and to promote LGBTIQ student equity and involvement. It is composed of staff, faculty, and students who are volunteer participants. By being listed on the website, this identifies that individual as one who is willing to provide a listening ear and support for LGBTIQ people to create a university climate of social equity. We encourage anyone to simply stop by our offices and say hello. HAVEN offers regular campus programming and academic course presentations for the campus community and continue to support the efforts of Gamma Sigma Kappa, our student-led gay-straight alliance. We want to support our LGBTIQ student in way that aids them in new life experiences while at SHSU.
University campuses provide a unique setting for students. Within the environment, Haven works to foster an atmosphere that promotes the exploration of thought, self-reflection, perceptions, beliefs, philosophy, and theories in an environment of social acceptance. HAVEN works to promote this unconditionally accepting environment amongst the SHSU campus community by being a group of active advocates for the LGBTIQ community.
