PhilosophyArticulation Agreement for 2004 and 2006 Catalogue Years Philosophy: "Philosopher" in Greek means a lover of wisdom, someone who raises serious questions about the world and someone whose curiosity is not satisfied by easy, superficial answers. Thus philosophers like Socrates long ago acquired a reputation for being critical thinkers. Philosophers will want to have logical reasons for their views, and they will feel dissatisfied as long as they do not have them. At the same time a philosopher will be attentive to what the limits of logic and reason may be. So, if you are a person of wide-ranging interests and an abiding curiosity, a person who is not willing to settle for superficial answers to your questions and who values logic and reasoning together with people with different points of view, then philosophy is for you. We welcome you to join us in the study of Philosophy at Sam Houston State University. Additional information may be found at the SHSU Philosophy web site.
A maximum of 66 credit hours (excluding kinesiology) may be transferred from a community college to Sam Houston State University. Students should carefully select courses to complete the associate degree while minimizing the number of hours that might exceed the 66 hour cap for transfer credit. In addition to the above courses, all courses in the State of Texas Common Core may be transferred between institutions. Students may transfer to SHSU at any time as long as they meet SHSU's admission requirements. Students close to completing the requirements for the Associate degree are encouraged to consider the potential advantages of completing the associate degree. One way to accomplish this is to transfer courses taken at SHSU back to the community college to complete degree requirements. Properly selected courses may be used to satisfy degree requirements at both institutions simultaneously. The applicant is encouraged to speak to an academic advisor familiar with the programs of all institutions involved to maximize the amount of transferable credit. Notes:
Texas residents who have graduated from high school within the past 16 months with the Recommended or Distinguished curriculum, or received your first Associate's Degree within the past 12 months may qualify for the Towards Excellence, & Success (TEXAS) Grant, a state financial aid program. Please review the basic qualifications. If you believe you qualify, contact your respective community college or university financial aid office. The financial aid office at SHSU may be contacted at (936) 294-1724 or at http://www.shsu.edu/~sfa_www/. Additional information may be found at http://www.collegefortexans.com. Revised 9/16/05 |
