History Transfer Pathway

Welcome to the Sam Houston State University Department of History. Since 1879, SHSU has been preparing students to lead meaningful lives that are grounded in an appreciation of history, art, literature, and science. The school’s motto, “The Measure of a Life is its Service,” echoes across Sam Houston State University’s seven colleges and beyond its Texas campus through student research, creative endeavors, volunteering, and more.

The Department of History at Sam Houston State University would like to extend a personnel invitation for you to visit and eventually join our department and faculty. The majority of courses are taught by resident, Ph.D. holding faculty, many of whom have been recognized with awards and prizes for their teaching, scholarship, and contributions to the historical profession. The department offers opportunities for students to excel at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The faculty is committed to providing students with opportunities to further their professional development and research at all levels.

All History majors and minors at SHSU must complete History 1301, History 1302, History 2311, and History 2312. • A maximum of 60 to 62 transfer credit hours may be applied to a degree at SHSU. Students should carefully select courses to complete the associate degree while minimizing the number of hours that might exceed the 60-hour cap for transfer credit
  • In addition to the major core above transfer students should complete all or as much as possible of the state mandated 42-hour core curriculum. Use your institutions 42-hour core as a guide maximizing courses in the above major core which are included in your institutions state mandated core.
