The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has designed a curriculum that is flexible enough to accommodate degree plans that emphasize abstract mathematics, statistics, and mathematics teacher preparation. An undergraduate degree in mathematics prepares a student for a wide variety of career opportunities in business, industry, and education, which call for analytic and problem-solving abilities.
The Department offers both Bachelor Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics. In the BA program, there are 36 required hours of mathematics as opposed to 39 hours in the BS program. Additionally, students seeking a BA must take freshmen and sophomore courses of a foreign language. Students seeking the BS replace the foreign language requirement with coursework in the sciences. In particular, students in this degree program are required to take calculus-based physics as partial fulfillment of their degree requirements.
Students who are interested in becoming a high school mathematics teacher can choose one or two teaching fields as an option. Contact the department at mth_adm@shsu.edu for further details.
Those students applying for the B.A. degree will be required to satisfy the university's foreign language requirement. Applicants for the B.S. degree typically require more courses in the sciences. Proper selection of science courses designated for "majors" may enhance your employability.

Degrees require a minimum of 120 hours with 42 advanced hours (3000-level and 4000-level courses). Some degrees require additional hours. All students are required to complete at least six writing-enhanced courses accumulating a minimum of 18 semester hours towards degree completion. Six of the hours must come from the student’s major field of study. SHSU students MUST complete ENGL 1301, ENGL 1302, Core Composite Area 2, and one-half of Composite Area 3 prior to enrollment in any upper-level class. In general, the Bachelor of Arts degree requires 8 hours of lab science and the Bachelor of Science degree requires 16 hours of lab science. Applicants for the Bachelor of Arts degree should consult their major department web page for foreign language requirements. Many colleges and programs have additional prerequisites for upper-level classes.
