Liz Freese holds an M.F.A from the University of Missouri in Kansas City, a B.S. from Butler University in Indianapolis, and has studied Shakespeare and Modern British Drama at Oxford University, London. Liz teaches Introduction to Production, Scenic Design, Properties, and Scenic Painting.
An active working professional, she has designed over 45 productions in the Houston area. Her favorite local designs include the world premieres A Way Home, and The Refuge (Houston Grand Opera), Four Places and Rabbit Hole (Stages Repertory Theatre), Arcadia and The Light in the Piazza (Main Street Theater), Sideways Stories From Wayside School and The Magician's Nephew (Main Street Youth Theater), Barfoot in the Park and I Hate Hamlet (Texas Repertory Theatre), Candida (Classical Theatre Company), Greater Tuna, Mary's Wedding, and Taming of the Shrew (Unity Theatre).
Internationally, Liz has designed sets and costumes for theatres in London and the Ukraine. Her favorite designs abroad include Gianni Schicchi (Dnipropetrovsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, Ukraine), The Weavers (Mountview Conservartory Theatre, London), and Oh! What a Lovely War (Bridewell Theatre, London).
Liz's designs for the Houston Grand Opera's world premiere of The Refuge have been published in the New York Times and her theoretical design of Einstein on the Beach won Opera America's Emerging Director and Designer competition in 2009. She has worked as a scenic artist at the Alley Theatre, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, and the Williams town Theatre Festival, and designed for nationally known directors Barry Kyle, Crispin Bonham Carter, Jeff Church, and Norb Joerder.
