Associate Professor of Voice
Mary Kay Lake, soprano, is an Assistant Professor of Voice and Director of Opera Workshop at Sam Houston State University. Her vocal studies were completed at Wittenberg University, Ohio (B.M.), Northwestern University, and the Ohio State University (M.A.). Her vocal teachers and coaches have included Dr. Richard Alderson, Paul Hickfang, Helen Swank, Barbara Corbin, and Dr. Walter Foster. Her operatic training was with Michael Chang, John Gay, and Boris Goldovsky.
Ms. Lake is an active recitalist and soloist, and continues to perform many operatic and musical theater roles in regional and university opera theaters. Most recently she has appeared as guest soloist with the SHSU Chorale at the 2006 Texas Music Educators Association Convention, the SHSU Wind Quintet at the 2005 International Flute Convention, the Houston Masterworks Chorus, and the Brazos Symphony Orchestra. She has sung with The Cecilian Singers, the Tuesday Musical Club Women's Chorus and the Huntsville Bach Choir. She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, national music fraternity, Alpha Lambda Delta, national honor fraternity, and an honorary member of Sigma Alpha Iota, an international music fraternity for women. She is also an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, both at the regional level and in the Greater Houston area. Prior to teaching at SHSU, Ms. Lake taught at the Ohio State University and North Harris College. She has also served as soloist, Music Director, and pianist/organist for churches in Columbus, Ohio and The Woodlands and North Houston areas.
