J. James Johnson, Adjunct Professor of Guitar, has been an SHSU faculty member since 1991. He also maintains a private studio in Huntsville, Texas. As a member of Folk Alliance International, he is a singer/songwriter and a producer for Thoreau Woods Coffeehouse and Johnson Studio House Concerts. He completed his B.S. in Secondary Education and Music Education at North Texas State University and received an M.A. in Music Therapy from Texas Woman's University, where he taught guitar on the music faculty from 1979 through 1980.
After working as a music therapist at San Antonio State Hospital, he became the first Registered Music Therapist to work for the Windham School District in the Texas Department of Corrections, where he piloted the music therapy program with psychiatric inmates. He has been on the Windham School District faculty as a music education director, a special education teacher, and an adult literacy teacher from 1982 to 2011. He has also been Past President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Huntsville Children's Choir.
