Over the past four years in July, nearly 200 Bolivian musicians have gathered in the city of La Paz to create the Bolivian Music Festival Orchestra and Chorus (Encuentro de Jóvenes Músicos Bolivianos) to have master classes with distinguished guest professors and participate in performance, conducting and composition competitions. In anticipation of 2015, representatives of the Bolivian Music Festival and Sam Houston State University have made plans for new and dynamic musical collaborations, part of which involve the creation of the 2015 SHSU/BMF International Composition Competition.

The SHSU Bill Watrous Jazz Festival is a competitive, educational event. High school and college jazz bands perform every 30 minutes throughout the day and receive critique sheets from each of the nationally known jazz educators and for the educational benefits that result from hearing other groups perform. Awards will be announced and presented during the SHSU Jazz Ensemble closing performances with Bill Watrous and featured guests. This adds an element of excitement to the festivities and recognizes superior individual achievement.

The SHSU Contemporary Music Festival holds a rich tradition of performing the best of new music on campus. Each year, one of America's top composers is brought in to share their music and special insights with the SHSU and surrounding communities. Past guests include Carter Pann, Michael Byron, Stefan Weisman, David Dzubay, Kyle Gann, Peter Garland, Donald Grantham, and Dan Welcher.

The SHSU Song & Aria Competition is held to promote student singer and collaborative pianist achievement in the performance of song literature and to promote degree studies at SHSU that encompass vocal and collaborative piano arts.

The SHSU Concert Band Festival provides an opportunity for young ensembles to perform and record in our acoustically customized concert hall in an inviting, professional environment. We are delighted to welcome performers to the Gaertner Performing Arts Center and the SHSU campus.
