Academic Advisement

General Information

All music majors are required to receive academic advisement each semester. Entering students must receive an academic advisement before they can register.

Music majors (with one exception—see below) are advised in the SAM Center by the CAM advisors. To be advised by the SAM Center, follow the instructions on the SAM Center website to schedule an appointment. Select the Arts & Media Advising Team when making your appointment.

Music Therapy students are normally advised by the Director of the Music Therapy program. Since the Director does not usually teach during the summer, music therapy majors who need advisement during the summer should meet with an advisor in the SAM Center.

Freshmen

Incoming music majors have the opportunity to receive their first academic advisement session during Freshman Orientation. Advance registration, however, actually begins in mid-spring. The result is that by the time of summer orientations, many class sections are already filled. For this reason, if a student can visit the campus and be advised prior to the summer, it is advantageous to do so.

Transfer Students

Incoming transfer students have the opportunity to receive their first academic advisement session during Transfer Student Orientation. Advance registration, however, actually begins in mid-spring. The result is that by the time of summer orientations, many class sections are already filled. For this reason, if a student can visit the campus and be advised prior to the summer, it is advantageous to do so.
