Lynn Cooper

Former Professor of Music, Asbury College

Dr. Lynn G. Cooper retired in 2007 as Chair of the Music Department and Professor of Music at Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky. He conducted the Concert Band and taught courses in conducting and instrumental music education.

Prior to his 1985 appointment at Asbury College, he taught in the public schools of Michigan for 19 years. The last 14 of those years were spent developing an outstanding band program at Ypsilanti High School. He also founded the Ypsilanti Community Band, an excellent adult band, which he conducted for 7 years. While in Michigan, he served in various district and state offices of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association.

Dr. Cooper is an active adjudicator, clinician, guest conductor, and author. His textbook for college instrumental methods courses, Teaching Band and Orchestra, was published by GIA Publications in 2004 and has become the standard textbook for that course.

Dr. Cooper has served on the Board of Directors of Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) from 1991 to 1997, and 1999 to the present. He currently serves as immediate past-president of KMEA. He is a member of National Band Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, Music Educators National Conference, Kentucky Music Educators Association, and is an honorary member of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association.

Dr. Lynn Cooper received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from The University of Michigan, and his Doctor of Education from the University of Kentucky.
