Major (Retired) Darryl Derr

Major (Retired) Darryl Derr has been the Recruiting Operations Officer for the Army ROTC program at Sam Houston State University since January 2008. He is a civil servant for the Department of the Army. He retired from the Army as a major in 2006.

Mr. Derr enlisted in the Army out of high school in 1976 as an armor crewman. He served with the 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood TX. He then enlisted in the Virginia Army National Guard in 1982 after serving several years on Active Duty. Later that year he joined the Army ROTC program at James Madison University. He completed his degree in English Literature and received his Active Duty commission as a Military Intelligence officer upon graduation in 1985.

Mr. Derr served as a platoon leader and staff officer while again assigned at Ft. Hood TX. He was a company commander and staff officer while stationed in Germany from 1990-1995. He spent three years as an Observer/Trainer with the Battle Command Training Program at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, training the staffs of all the Brigade and Battalion maneuver units in the National Guard.

In 1998, Mr. Derr was assigned as the G2 for the 52nd Explosive Ordinance Disposal Group in Ft. Gillem, GA. He returned to Reserve Component training support from 2001-2003 while assigned to the 91st Training Support Division at Camp Parks, CA. He served as the C2/J2 Intelligence Exercise Plans officer for Combined Forces Command/United States Forces Korea from 2003-2005. From 2005 until his retirement in 2006, he was assigned as the Chief of Analysis for the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command at Ft. Bliss, TX.

MAJ(R) Derr has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Meritorious Service Medal (5x), the Army Commendation Medal (2x), the Army Achievement Medal (2x), other service awards, and the Parachutist Badge.
