Mathematics Education Program

The Mathematics Education program at SHSU helps prepare students for teaching at all levels.  Our faculty are committed to preparing future leaders in mathematics education. We encourage those interested in this program to reach out to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics or the College of Education for additional information.
 

Bachelor of Science in Education with a minor in Mathematics (4-8 grade level)

Students wishing to become mathematic teachers for grade levels 4-8 in the Texas Public School system follow the degree plan earning a BS in Education with a minor in Mathematics. Double Major in Education and Mathematics, Bachelor of Science

Students wishing to become secondary mathematic teachers for grade levels 7-12 in the Texas Public School system follow the degree plan earning a Bachelor of Science, Double Major in Education and Mathematics. Master of Arts in Mathematics

The Master of Arts Degree in Mathematics at Sam Houston State University is a non-thesis program, consisting of 36 semester hours, a capstone research course, and an oral examination. It is primarily designed for those who want to teach mathematics at community colleges, and/or AP or concurrent enrollment at the high school level, and/or pursue a doctorate in mathematics education. Core courses are taught 100% online by exceptional faculty. Scholarship opportunities are available for students in this program. Requirements for Admission:

  • A bachelor’s degree
  • Undergraduate calculus I, II, III, and linear algebra, with B's or higher
  • An application to the Office of Graduate Studies
  • Official undergraduate transcripts
  • Three letters of recommendation
