Our library science courses are founded in a variety of professional library skills and utilize the latest advances in technology and information literacy to prepare students to collaborate with teachers, manage multimedia collections and maintain a successful library. With cutting-edge knowledge of technology and information design, our students graduate as leaders and models ready to fill any of the many different roles available in a school library, such as school librarian, teacher-librarian, or technology coordinator, to name a few.

Master of Library Science
The Master of Library Science prepares graduate students for school librarianship. In Texas, to become a certified school librarian, a graduate with a MLS must also have a valid teaching certificate and two years of EC-12 classroom experience prior to taking the TExES School Librarian Certification exam.
School Librarian Certification
The School Librarian Certification program is for graduate students who already have a master's degree and are seeking to become a school librarian. In Texas, certification requires a valid teaching certificate and two years of EC-12 classroom teaching experience prior to taking the TExES School Librarian Certification exam.
If you already have a master's degree, you will not be required to take an entrance exam.

Sam Houston State University’s Department of Library Science Certificate Programs offers certificates in Children’s & YA Literature and the Children & Youth Library Services. The programs focus on best practices in the field and are designed to provide skills in school librarianship.
